George Tuck, the repair technician, got this repair right, the first time. And 14 months later, the pilot's still working fine. I know— I hired him while house-sitting for the homeowner. And regularly provide cleaning services for the owner. So I check the pilot every cleaning visit. George showed me what the pilot—and thermostat— should look like when operating properly.
Love George's educational approach! Also efficient, warm and friendly. With a down-to-earth sense of humor. And as a woman, I felt safe alone in the house with him. Total trust.
THE OPERATION COMPLETED
— Cleaned pilot
— Stripped and reconnected control wiring
— Replaced generator cartridge
— Re-lit pilot
— Safe-tested the valve
— Rechecked operation. Then rechecked. And rechecked again, to confirm that everything was operational and safe.
HOW IT UNFOLDED
I hired George not as the homeowner, but as the the owner's cleaning service. House-sitting for a two-month stretch, while the owner was touring Antarctica.
I never suspected a problem w/ the pilot. Not until a general contractor-friend visited me at the house. He said the pilot sounded too loud. And the flame didn't look right.
First I called PG&E. A technician came out immediately, confirming the pilot urgently needed repair. And turned off the pilot, meanwhile, for safety.
I was nervous about hiring a repair service. I'd never owned a home. Never hired this type of service. And had zero knowledge about heaters or pilot lights.
But the owner entrusted me with any emergencies or repairs, to handle at my discretion. And left me enough money to cover anything.
Still, I asked the owner to handle this herself, upon her return. But she kindly reminded me she was in *Antarctica*. And preferred returning to a nice, *warm* house, thank you.
Unfortunately, the owner could not remember whom she'd hired previously, for heater repairs. Maybe the cold was getting to her...
But I'm a savvy consumer, so shopped around. And learned that AH&V is a family-owned-and-run- company. That matters to me. And every AH & V technician is an employee. Not contracted out. George himself has fixed heaters for AH&V plenty of years, as the great-grandson of the original owner, George Tuck.
Again, the pilot's still working fine, 14 months post-repair.

Ordered $145 furnace servicing. In a few minutes of arriving the guy told my daughter he had capped the gas line because the furnace was full of cracks and needed replacement immediately! He told her to evacuate with her toddler and newborn and needless to say scared her to death. Within the hour Atlas sent me a proposal to replace the furnace for almost $3000. We had PGE check and we were told there was no evidence of any cracks, but they couldn't check CO levels (the Atlas guy hadn't measured) until Atlas reattached the gas lines. When I called Atlas they said it was the law to cap, though the PGE tech didn't think was true. Atlas wouldn't do it unless we could get an exact time appointment for PGE to be there too (of course PGE always only gives a 4 hr window) so Atlas wouldn't reattach the gas line. Plus they charged us $105 for 5 minutes capping the line. We finally called another respected company who reattached the gas line and checked EVERYTHING I.e. Took motor out and checked carbon monoxide levels and for gas leaks...and nothing was wrong. NO cracks! This was a horrific experience for my daughter and family who had just moved in and had to move in with us while this mess was straightened out. I always thought Atlas was a reputable company but it seems they just wanted to scare us Into purchasing a new furnace? By the way I spoke to someone who said he was the owner...and he said "oh customers usually don't call PGE to check! A nightmarish experience!
