So the search was on for a mason. Of the four masons companies I interviewed, Jason was the more responsive and energetic of the bunch. I walked him through what was wanted and we discussed all the details, which involved applying the stone in a very tight, 'no mortar' look, and rebuilding the hearth so that it gave the impression of floating a few inches off the floor. 'No problem'. He brought over samples of stone and was intregal in the final decision on what stone to go with (K2's Ocean Mist).
On day one, Jason and his two-man crew began by removing the existing hearth and built a temporary wood frame within which concrete would be poured to form the basis of the hearth. Before the concrete was poured, they installed iron rebar where the concrete will be to strengthen it. Then they began installing the veneer. A couple of times there was a stone that was too 'funky' -looking, ie: mottled or overy spotted, that didn't really look right and they were happy to remove it, even after it had been installed and surrounded by other stone.
The hearth cover is honed absolute black granite tile, which was cut to have a miter edge (by request), so that the edge comes to a point. The tile was 24and quot; x 24and quot; in size and was cut to fit on the 6and quot; thick hearth.
The whole process once they started took about 2.5 weeks, with a couple of days off to allow the poured concrete to dry. Jason would sometimes send an update with an attached picture via email or text while the work was in progress, so if you are technologically inclined, you will find this appealing. I believe he has a Facebook page with pics, so you may check out more of his work there. Jason was a pleasure to work with, very personable, and obviously takes pride in his work. He stood by his word on our agreement and the quote he gave me, even when the stone turned out to be more expensive (the supplier mis-quoted him). A very stand-up guy. Jason and his crew are true artists, and I absolutely love the way the fireplace turned out. The entire experience was a joy, and I will be using him again for some patio work in the future.
