I was initially impressed with his apparent knowledge and the way that he presented himself. We discussed the work and he submitted a bid.
At about the time that I met with GEM to get a bid for the water heaters, an A/C condenser stopped working. I spoke with the GEM owner that I met with and he said that GEM did A/C work as well as plumbing. He said that GEM Plumbing has two divisions, plumbing and air conditioning. He said that his partner ran the air conditioning division.
I met with the owner in charge of air conditioning and accepted his bid to relocate and replace the condenser.
The owner in charge of A/C was very surly and disagreeable. He complained about the layout of the house, claiming that it made doing the job too hard and that the existing equipment was unsatisfactory to his standards in one way or another.
He was about as unprofessional as a businessman can be.
He agreed to meet with me on multiple occasions and was late by a couple of hours.
He constantly complained about my house and about life in general. He has a glass is half empty attitude.
The GEM installation workmen crushed the ducts in the attic space restricting the flow of the cooled air. The GEM A/C owner claimed that his men were not responsible even though the only workmen in the attic space at the time of the damage were the GEM employees. I pointed out that the ducts were not damaged before GEM’s employees worked in the attic and that no one other than GEM employees had been in the attic space.
He pretty much deflected any possible blame for anything by claiming that the existing conditions were unacceptable. GEM did not perform any corrective work and I later hired another contractor to replace the crushed ducts.
The GEM owner in charge of A/C did apologize about some of his behavior. He claimed that his wife had serious health problems and that he was distracted. He stated that he has become old and cranky and is considering leaving the business. He repeatedly said, and quot;I do not know if I want to do this any more.and quot;
My relations with the other GEM owner seemed much more harmonious and I was anxious to move forward with the tankless water heaters. I made an appointment with the owner in charge of plumbing. I rearranged my schedule because, as I told the GEM plumbing owner, I was anxious to get the work done.
The tankless water heater work had been delayed because of the need to do some demolition which exposed subfloor conditions. This area was otherwise inaccessible and we needed to identify how the gas hook up could be installed. When the floor was removed and the cavity below it exposed, I tried to schedule the meeting with the GEM owner in charge of plumbing to see how site conditions affected his bid and how the work would be performed.
On the morning of the meeting, he called to reschedule. He said that he wanted to meet with his insurance representative at the time scheduled for our meeting. I complained that I had cancelled my meetings, and that I agreed to meet with him in the middle of the day, because I needed the water heater work to proceed. I added that I had mentioned these facts when we scheduled the meeting.
He said that meeting with his insurance representative was more important than meeting with me and that, in any event, GEM would not start any work until next year at the earliest, so what was the hurry?
That ended any meaningful discussion. I decided that he was as unprofessional as the A/C owner and I did not reschedule our meeting.
I strongly recommend against using this company.
Overall, it went well. Sean and Jon were both very personable and professional. In addition, Sean took some time to patiently answer all my questions and provide recommendations for future maintenance.
Although I hope I never need to, I would gladly use Gem Plumbing again in the future.
Work was done on time, by a motivated crew.
Work was done professionally.
I am very happy with them.
