Tate came back into my home and he gave me a verbal report. He probably would have provided me with a written report, but I told him it was not necessary. I just wanted his honest opinion and he gave it. We discussed quick fixes which he was able to do that afternoon as well as some longer range, more expensive solutions, to improve the efficiency and the air filtration system in my home. Most people don't think about this, but the air quality in your home is very important. I have neighbors who are sick all the time and it's usually due to dust, mold, and pollen in their air ducts and ventilation system!
I am pretty particular about any contractors I hire, but Smith and Jones provides a valuable service which offers an excellent value for all the work they performed for me. Yes, I will definitely be having Smith and Jones back to my home to finish the work he suggested, and will also be highly recommending Tate Jones to my friends, neighbors, and business associates! Especially those neighbors who are sick all the time.....
"Many people think it is like a car tune up. Identifying things that need repair is part of a check up. Safety, gas leaks and performance are the main idea. In this case the secondary condensate was not hooked up, 15 degrees less then average delta temperature over the heat exchanger on a 14 year old 80% furnace. Not big issues and the home owner was nonplussed on any repairs. No safety issues were found and air filters should be changed more frequently."
"Every thing done right, pictures included and quick professional service. Not an A , Hummmmm"
"cleaning down a furnace, chemical cleaning the coil and air conditioner coil is not included in an inspection. Gas leakage is included and if found we fix it at that time for an additional charge. Duct cleaning is a much larger service call. Rust deposits, calcium and heat exchanger problems are identified and not included in the inspection charge. Dead frogs, lizards and rodents are removed. spider webs on the circuitry is included."
"This was a very nice work experience with a professional person as the home owner. Perhaps the cup of coffee I accepted was unnecessary."
"This is a clear report from the home owner. When a system is 25 years old or so and has deteriorated to a point of unsafe is still a good idea to check for gas leaks and flue carbon monoxide."
cheap and nobody was concerned about efficiency, and he was right. Tate made a number of recommendations as to what I could do to improve the overall efficiency of the system. Although the cooling and heating system had been replaced, the ducting was original and was lacking in insulation and most likely had leaks. I learned from him that a 15% loss in my ducts can result in a 50% energy inefficiency.
We shook hands and Tate left. We have been touch by email since then. I never did receive a bill for his services and would have gladly paid it even though I heard about the free inspection on the radio station KTKZ, 1380.
By replacing the ducts in one of the rooms, adding an additional air return, the comfort level increased dramatically. At some point I will probably hire his company to seal my ducts.
I would happily recommend Smith and Jones Heating and Air

"This was a very nice couple and a DIY situation. It was my pleasure to give the instructions needed and follow up with e-mails to be helpful. I did not charge for the call."
"In performing 20 inspections this fall I have had two poor reviews. One from someone I never met and this one. There are many homes of different sizes and equipment. Some homes have 5 systems in them. This home had a package unit on the roof. The home was very small and the system was straight forward. It was on the roof and most of the work was completed on the roof. the main reason for an inspection is for safety and performance. Test the gas pipes for leaks etc. Test the differential temperature of the system's performance. This home had an added duct to the small room modification that was lower in air temperature delivery than the others. some duct insulation problems however small. The owner was with me the entire time except on the roof and the system problems were simple. a written report was not called for and a complementary item sent to people who were not home or could not crawl onto the attic or the crawl space. Homes with problems needing attention."
"I never met the member, I explained to her husband that the line set was undersized, The drip pan was rusted and the coil was leaking. The furnace was nor sized for the air conditioner and was not delivering the air flow requirement for the A/C 5 ton. On some ducts the differential for heat temperature was 12 degrees and normal would be between 40 and 50. The furnace was buried behind the duct system and required crawling completely around the attic to find. The photos were for the house owner to see the size of the furnace in relationship to the A/c coil and plenum to help them understand the air flow problem. Also a photo was sent to show the rusting of the drip pan from the coil leak.I spent over one hour looking over there home as a certified building analyst. some of the ducts were exploded and in very poor shape. Pool pump was running a 2200 watts per hour, and in very poor shape and is illegal to replace with the same inefficient type. one HWH nipple was corroded from electrolysis and should be replaced. I did not think to home owner was in danger from carbon monoxide and a thorough testing was done for gas leaks with an electronic gas sniffer. There was some problem with the thermostat and was difficult to fire the furnace burners. It is true there is no lubrication required on their system. Tate Jones 916-749-6326"
I'm a general contractor who specializes in disaster repair. My company deals with a lot of heating and air contractors, and we have weeded the list down to some pretty good contractors. But I was looking for something different.
I typically dislike contractors (even though I am one), as most are poor businessmen, operate outside the law, don't carry insurance, don't show up, don't clean up, don't finish on time..... the list goes on and on.
Smith and Jones is nothing like what I just described.
When I initially met Tate Jones, I was skeptical. I mistook his vast knowledge for being and quot;slickand quot;. He's not slick- he knows his stuff. What impressed me was the fact that he didn't want to sell me everything. He wanted to do what was right. He wanted to do what made sense for my wife and me, and our individual situation. He showed me where we were losing money each month via wasted energy. He developed solutions that made sense, and could show me in hard numbers why it made sense. Being fairly analytical, I sincerely appreciated that.
What made me want to do business with Smith and Jones, rather than some of the other good HVAC contractors I typically deal with, was the fact that they could handle the HVAC, the pool equipment, and the solar heating for the pool. Essentially, they were a one stop shop for what I needed. However, it still took me a couple of months of research to be comfortable using someone I wasn't familiar with.
Without a doubt, I am glad I met Tate Jones. Not only did he have the insurance, contractor's license, and certifications I wanted, he and his crew showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves each day, were respectful of us and our home, and gave us more value than we paid for. They developed creative, sensible, solutions to our problems. We got top of the line equipment, cleanly installed by professionals, and paid less than we expected. I couldn't ask for more.
Most HVAC contractors sell equipment. What Tate sells is an integrated, well thought out, well planned solution to a problem we all have- wasted energy.
The people were respectful and verified with me about where the air conditioning changes were to be located. The old equipment was removed and everything was cleaned. It took one day for the whole job and no one in my home was inconvenienced.
Tate arrived to make sure I was happy and went over the new thermostat with me. Asked if I had any questions which I did not. it was completed exactly as it was explained before the work started.
I would recommend Smith and Jones to anyone.
