 + -1 moreJim Wilson is a registered piano technician and a member of the Piano Technicians Guild. A technician compared to a tuner is like a master cabinet maker compared to a carpenter. Both have good skills, but need to be matched to the job at hand. My baby grand is about 90 years old and was re-built by another piano technician as part of his training about 30 years ago. The last work on it was about 14 years ago, and it had been moved to different houses twice since then. Jim was prompt for his two appointments. He cleaned the work area and the piano thoroughly after his work (for example, shaping hammers can create a lot of dust). I have a good ear for individual notes and was quite happy with the final tuning and voicing. Jim was polite, friendly, upbeat and carefully explained all of his work in advance.
Description of Work: Certified piano technician to regulate and repair a baby grand piano, perform two tunings and, finally, voicing. Regulation means making sure the internal action connecting the keys to the strings is working properly: all 88 keys use the same finger pressure to strike the string with the same speed and power; hammers (the parts that hit the string) are smooth and shaped properly (e.g., grooves in hammers change the tone); dampers (the parts that stop the string from vibrating and stop the sound) work correctly. Tuning - two tunings were needed; the first was to tighten the strings and bring the piano slightly above (sharp) the proper pitch and this occured about 3 days before the regulation work(this rest period is necessary since the strings stretch); the second tuning after the regulation was to get the correct pitch for each note. Voicing can change the tone of the piano to be brighter or warmer; needs to be same for all 88 keys
