Contractor ruined our kitchen floor because he leveled and installed flooring incorrectly and ultimately had to remove it. He recommended a subcontractor to fix his poor leveling and flooring job but has refused to repay us for the damaged flooring we had to replace and for the work we had to pay the flooring installers to fix his work. We were left with a hole in our kitchen floor for months. The work done was sub par and he never completed the finishing touches he promised. There were also several instances throughout the job when he came by the house without consulting us first.

This was the second job John has done for us. (The first was repair from water leak in kitchen). He was thorough, friendly and knowledgeable. He was patient and flexible with us as well. When the usual unexpected challenges occurred, he always had a plan B. John answered calls and texts promptly. We are very happy with our new bathroom and updated doors. Thanks John!

It was outstanding! He was on time and very responsive. They were also very respectful of my father's privacy since they were working on his home and not mine. They left the home spotless every day when they left, too! It was everything I ever wanted and more!

John said it was a 3 month job and it only ran over by a couple of weeks. In my experience that has never happened before. They were at the house early every morning with a plan for the day that they stuck with. John is an easy going very knowledgeable about the job and how to get it done. He has a good group of guys that showed up everyday and worked very hard. He took care of the permitting and was always available to answer questions and to explain the next phase of the job. Yes, I would hire John for future construction jobs.

We are very pleased with the quality of work performed and recommend JRG Construction to those looking for a general contractor. Our 1-bed/1-bath home was built in 1950 and had never been updated. The house had eight electrical outlets (none in the bathroom) and the plumbing was functional but old. We decided on a full kitchen and bath remodel, down to the studs with new plumbing and electrical throughout. We interviewed two contractors and chose John Goulart of JRG Construction. We reviewed with John our wants and needs. He had us speak with the sub contractors for plumbing, electrical, tile, cabinets and flooring. His bid was accepted. The timeline was three months. The need for changes/revisions did occur. We had to remove the kitchen door to the back yard but in doing that gained a small pantry. We changed the entry point to the kitchen during the remodel. John was able to adapt to that. He was proactive in dealing with the building/planning department and architect. He looked ahead to find possible issues/concerns so that the process went very smoothly. All of the work was performed under John’s watchful eye and he was consistent about communicating with us and sending photos, as we live in the central valley, 3 hours away. The remodel took 3-1/2 months; in part because we added HVAC during the process of the remodel. We recommend JRG Construction to those looking for a general contractor.

John was very thorough and thoughtful about the plans we wanted. He was very detail oriented and communicated often to ensure we knew ecacty what was happening. He would explain in great detail the work and methods he was using to accomplish our remodeling goals. John always wanted to check in with us to let us know exactly where are dollars where going and why something took the amount of time it did. He was always looking to help us save a buck on supplies when possible but not at the expense of quality. His tile contractor did a great job and helped us with a great idea for our vanity counters. The counters that came with the vanity didn't fit our tight bathroom space so we purchased inexpensive custom tiles that looked even better and she made it work. His plumbing contractor, who was nice and friendly, was our only negative performance experience. He didn't say anything about the cover for the inflowing waterlines to the toilet not fitting. We discovered it after they left and had to replace it ourselves no big deal but it was a departure from the great experience we had had with John. He also left all of the trash from the installation of the toilet in our master bedroom. Again it was probably because John had been so diligent in getting all his trash cleaned and packed out that we were a little surprised that his other contractor did not practice the same customer service values. A few weeks later we have noticed a slow drip from one of the faucets into the sink and are unsure if it is the material or the installation. several months after the installation we found there had been a leak from the incoming water line to the same leaky faucet that had been leaking for a while but it was under the sink and a harder to notice. It looks like some plumbing tape should fix it. Overall It was a great experience and even the minor issues with the plumber are not enough to bring down our rating of John.

I got several estimates but John's was by far the lowest and the work was done just as I liked.  John was easy to work with, friendly and talkative, and he explained all the options and pros and cons, why work had to be done a certain way, work permits, etc.  The price was excellent and perfectly satisfactory.  All the workers (total of 3) were friendly and liked the dog (like me, like my dog)!  John was good at getting back to me and keeping me well informed of the various aspects of the job (i.e. when I would get a receipt for unused lumber, what time they would be there, what the work plan was, when they would finish, how things were charged in the final bill,  etc.)  I would use JRG again, and in fact getting the steps done was one way to get to know some contractors in the area in planning for future needs.

The results were exceptional.  The job was completed in four days.  The opening between the two rooms opened up the house and provided additional lighting.  John kept in touch with me by texts, emails and photos.
If we next move to renovate our kitchen, J.R.G Construction will be the only estimate we will seek.

John and his crew were wonderful. Did a great job. Easy to work with - made remodel as painless as possible. They installed new vanity, medicine cabinet, lighting fixtures, repainted walls and ceiling, installed and painted a new door, and installed all faucets and shower fixtures. The floor and bathtub surround were retiled. His tile subcontractor, Josephine Nelson, did a beautiful job.

I had my sidings replaced. The workers were great and very fantastic. They were very professional and they follow through on everything properly as far as I can tell.

"(removed membername), Thanks for the review, the work was pretty much a straight forward job as to what needed to be done. I did like the way you got the redwood to bleach out, back to the same color as the rest of the house, it was hard to tell we had ever been there and replaced anything."

I think John did a great job.  He was always here on time, and he was very particular that everything got done to perfection.  He took me to Home Depot and had me pick out everything. I'm glad we picked him.  Another thing about John was that he cleaned up every day before he left. He completed the job on time and without extra money.

John remodeled almost our entire home in Pebble beach. He is a thorough professional, consicentious. He gave a detailed breakdown of the budget and stuck to it. He had the house ready for us as per shcedule. He comunicated with us in detail through out the project and kept us in the loop with every significant detail. All the sub contractors he used were absolutely professional too. Josephine Nelson with the tile company was exceptional in her work ethic. The electrical work was extensive with the 1960s home and it was done in a flawless manner. We would use all their serivces whenever need be without any hesitation.

Here is a letter we wrote to John, owner of JRG. It pretty much sums up our experience and how we feel about the work he did:

John,

Now that our remodel is complete and we have passed our final inspection we’d like to express our sincere appreciation for the fine job you, your carpenter and your subcontractors have done. The workmanship and attention to detail has been outstanding and it really shows in the final results. When you began work, the house was a rundown gutted shell and now it is a showcase home like those you see on the pages of Sunset Magazine!

By far and away this has been the most major construction project we have ever undertaken – almost a total rebuild. Because we had heard so many “contractor from h***” stories from friends, we were more than a little apprehensive when we committed to begin this project. But as the work progressed, it became clear to us that you are a man of integrity, that you take pride in your work, and that you hold your subcontractors to a similar high standard.

In the end we can say without question that you served our needs exceptionally well. You met your budget and time commitments and you did a great job of keeping us informed about your progress. You also explained challenges you ran into in plain English and clearly articulated the options to resolve them. Given the size and cost of this job, we had braced ourselves for a stressful and difficult process. But it was actually pretty painless and kind of exciting to witness the transformation of a dilapidated house into the comfortable and attractive home it is today. And we give you all the credit for making this a pleasant process that resulted in a place that our family will enjoy for many years to come.

Warmest regards,
Larry and Barb

"(Remove member names), It was also a pleasure working with you. The transformation from old to new certainly was a process that turned out better then any of us would have imagined, the choices on the finishes really made a major difference on how it all turned out, the combination of kitchen windows, appliances and granite tops really made the small kitchen a spacious area, the fireplaces gave it a feeling of warmth and comfort, the bathrooms both very impressive with the raised bowl to custom tile walls and floors. Both (Remove member names), we just put all the pieces together, you made all the right choices to make it what it is today. Thanks again John R. Goulart J.R.G. Construction Co."

Great! John came by promptly for an initial evaluation and estimate and a second time with Mike before beginning the work to confirm details, review work plan and his suggestions to get our buy-in. Advised against replacing t&g on landing as it was in good shape & I could keep the lumber for any future repairs. Obviously a detailed oriented and honest businessman. And a heck of a good carpenter, too!
