Be prepared: You don't just pay for the work done on your house. You start paying 105.00/hour from the minute your plumber is dispatched - no matter where he is coming from, yes, no matter where he is - in my case it was 20 minutes and I was told (by the woman who dispatches) that I was 'lucky' he was in the area. Then, before anyone starts working on your problem, there is a one time 20 dollar fee for equipment - huh, I'm paying for the plumber's equipment? And then, in my case, I had to pay an extra 30 minutes while we waited for a friend of the plumber's to come to help him carry the equipment out of my backyard. When I called to question having to pay for the 30 minutes of extra time, I was lectured by a condescending woman about why all these additional fees were required - from HER point of view. Yes, to her, it made perfect sense that I was charged yet another 50+ dollars for 'waiting' for someone to come and carry equipment from my back yard. Even though Joe was great (I'd hire him again), I will not return to A & R Plumbing - 2 of my neighbors saw A & R's truck and asked about my experience and I had to tell the same. At the end of the day, I was charged 215.00 for 45 mins of labor - watch out for those hidden fees.
Response from A & R Plumbing Inc
"[Member Name Removed] it's unfortunate your don't agree with our service charges. We feel the [Member Information Removed] we charge for service is fair. We charge every call to ever customer the same [Member Information Removed] we have for 40+ years By the hour, 1 hour minimum, time starts when technician is dispatched and ends when done at your property, after the 1st hour labor is charged in 1/2 hour increments. This information was gone over with you when you called to make your appointment. A couple of things I want to clarify. Although your time does start when they are dispatched we try hard to group calls so generally the tech is 10 - 15 min away. If they were coming from Big Sur we don't start your time until he's back in Carmel for example. Also you were advised of the equipment charge. This is for the mainline equipment and is a standard charge. As far as the helper, If you don't have an accessible cleanout and we need to get big heavy equipment up or downstairs to clear your line. We will send a helper to ensure we don't injure your property or our technicians. In your case Joe did need help and he didn't charge you the 1 hour minimum but .5 hour for him to go to you property and help carry the equipment on stairs in your yard. This was the first time you had used our service. You called about 1pm and we dispatched Joe to you about just before 3pm. The same woman your saying was condescending spoke with you initially and felt bad for your situation ( you tugged at her heart strings ) and worked it in for you when we were already full for the afternoon. Sorry you feel we were so horrible it would prompt you to post this and spread your opinion to all. I think most people would agree given the details that you received an honest service at a fair price. All and All $ 215.00 for the service we provided is fair. Please call around and compare to other reputable companies in our area."

After living on the Monterey Peninsula for over 10 years, I finally found a plumbing business that focuses on customer service. As a mature female customer I was treated courteously and professionally, not as if I lacked brain power. The work was done timely in a competent manner. In addition, I wasn’t nickled and dimed to death – many charge at least $100 to just show up, and then the clock starts ticking. A & R Plumbing charges by the hour. Best of all, if a techician doesn’t have a part, there is a person who will deliver it, if available, to the job site. What a concept! This avoids unnecessary return visits and hourly fees, a con job used by other businesses who don’t have enough business. I’m impressed. Jeff, the technician who took care of my problem, is fantastic. I’m only sorry A & R Plumbing doesn’t have an electrical department

It took him a couple of hours to install the water heater. It was all good. The installer was very knowledgeable and pleasant. He did a good job. He cleaned up after himself. The hot water is working fine.

Over the last five years they have replaced my toilet, replaced my drainage pipes, and replaced the kitchen sink. All where completed quickly and exceeded my expectations. When there was a problem with the size of the sink I ordered they went above and beyond to make it work.

I had done as much of it as I could, but I couldn't get the old supply lines disconnected.  So I knew it wouldn't take too long. Other plumbers charge exorbitant flat fees.   I've paid as much as $277 for 6 minutes of work.  I will only use A&R Plumbing because they charge a reasonable $99 per hour or $149 per hour on weekends/holidays.  I recommend them to all my friends.

A&R Plumbing was super. We had used them in the past and were very happy with them. We switched to another provider for awhile and were not as happy with the results (they weren't bad, but A&R is much superior). Scott was wonderful. He arrived within the 2 hour window they gave us. He was very respectful, gave very clear explanations, was very careful to present the costs before work was begun, and indicated where some uncertainty was as the tub problem wasn't obvious until he got under the house. We were delighted that they were able to start immediately after reviewing the issues and making a recommendation. They completed the work in just a few hours. Very impressive.
We're back to being A&R customers for good.

They were fairly decent. They showed up and they did their best but they dropped some stuff in the sewer line and the city had to come out. So it was a little bit chaotic. They did seem to resolve the problem and over all it worked out but it wasn't as awesome as the review said it was.

The price included parts and service. They were able to come within 2 hours. They finished the work while they were there and replaced the part. It was the second time we used them and that’s why we called them back. They were very helpful and nice people working there. They were easy to handle.

The water heater was replaced satisfactorily. In the process, the installation required replacing the platform to conform with current standards for propane fueled heaters. This also required altering the plumbing attached to the water heater and the recirculating pump. The plumber was very efficient and knew what he was doing. The result was functional and neat. I will use A & R again.
