They were wonderful and moved everything required. They were quick and efficient.
We had purchased a 3-hour/3-man deal through Angie's List, but it took far longer than it should have for the movers to get our stuff onto the truck, it felt like they were intentionally working slowly. Once they arrived at the new house, it was clear we were irritated and they sped it up a bit.
At the end of the move, we found a custom frame with the glass shattered, and had an exceedingly awkward conversation with a guy who claimed to be the supervisor and clearly wanted us to settle for some small amount of cash rather than file a claim. When it became clear that he didn't want to compensate us for more than a token amount, we told him we would go through the normal process.
Overall, not happy with the service, the fact that the movers were late with no communication on ETA until I had already called twice to find out, and the weirdly shady conversation with the boss trying to get out of dealing with a claim for an expensive item that they damaged.
About a month ago, I saw this deal on Angie's List for 3 movers for 3 hours from North Park Transfer and Storage for $279. Seemed like a great deal to get an extra mover for the price I usually pay for 2 and bought it. If you call ANY moving company and say you need to move a 1 bedroom apartment, they will tell you it is a small job and with 2 movers it will take around 3 hours and 3 movers it will take around 2 hours. I called to schedule my appointment for 8am August 1st. They told me that they would let me know the day before if that time would work as it would be later if they could book a bigger job.
The day before Aug 1, I received a message that my movers would arrive between 8 and 10am - annoying to have a window since I had work to do that day but I could make it work, after all, I was planning on them being done after 2 hours.
At 8:30am on August 1st, I received a call from one of the movers to let me know that one of the movers had called in sick and they were waiting on another to arrive and would then be on their way. All 3 arrived at 9:45am. They did not give me any paperwork to sign at this point but did remind me that it would be $125 an hour if the move went over the 3 hours. They then all expressed how happy they were that this was going to be an easy move with not a lot of stuff.
I had all of my belongings packed in boxes and neatly lined up and ready to go. My doorway was directly in front of a small stair case of 6 stairs but they were just stacking the boxes up on a dolly and rolling it down the stairs rather than carrying the boxes so that shouldn't have slowed them down. About 45min in, one of the movers disappeared. A mover who was sitting on my living room floor taking a break explained he had gone to throw up and wasn't feeling well. They all continuously took breaks. I should have said something but didn't want to be cruel as I wasn't doing any of the lifting. I never imagined I would be charged for their time to recuperate or vomit. Finally the truck was loaded at noon. They said they wanted to stop at the store and but some drinks and they weren't feeling well. They asked me where the nearest store was. I said there was one 2 blocks down as well as a 7/11 in my building we would be driving to. I took off in my car. They showed up an hour later. It took me 12 minutes to drive there. They parked in the loading zone right in front of the entrance to my building. From there it is a straight shot to the elevators about 25 ft away. My apartment is right when you get off the elevators on the 8th floor. The elevators were not being used by other tenants since it was the middle of a workday.
They unloaded at an extremely slow pace and became obvious that they were not feeling well and trying to move slower by asking where to place EVERY SINGLE TRIVIAL ITEM - JUST PUT THE RED VASE DOWN! They told me there was no way they could fit my couch in thru my hallway. I explained that the previous tenant had the same size couch as me and got it in. They offered to do me a "favor" and "take my [extremely expensive Ethan Allen leather] couch off of my hands" - gee thanks! Why would I give away my furniture to the movers I don't know?! All 3 of them stood around for awhile looking at it. I finally asked if they had finished unloading, they said they hadn't. 2 of them continued to unload, 1 spent 20 minutes talking to my maintenance man about my couch and asking if he knew where I could rent a crane - ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
They FINALLY finished unloading everything at 2:45pm. My couch was left in my hallway. At 3:15 one of the movers showed up with paperwork (and tried to charge me for the 30 min he had supposedly been doing paperwork). He had me sign a few papers and then had me sign one that he said he had "forgot" to show me up front that stated my move would not exceed his quote of $1200!!! $1200 to move a 1 bedroom apartment which has cost me $300 with 5 different companies in the past?! If I had seen that upfront I would have told them to get out and would have called another company -it would have been clear that they were going to take their time and rip me off. He then gave me a bill which I disputed with him. I told him that this move should have taken 2 hours, 3 at the absolute most and shouldn't have to pay for their breaks and vomiting. We argued about it and I finally paid an additional $424.89 (in addition to the $279 I had already paid thru Angie's List) to get him out of my apartment.
At this point, it was 3:45pm. The point of hiring professional movers was to have my entire apartment moved in the morning so I could go back to work in the afternoon. This move wasted my entire day. My dad came over that evening and he and I (keep in mind that I am a 5'3", 110lb woman) moved my couch into the living room without damaging the walls or the couch....or hiring a crane. This was the couch the movers left in my hallway and tried to get me to give them.
The 3 movers were all extremely polite and personable, however that doesn't justify taking over 6 hours to move a 1 bedroom apartment with 3 movers, when it has always taken 3 hours with 2 movers 5 times in the past.
I have filed a dispute with my credit card company and they are reaching out to the company for me. I don't feel that I should pay for anything over 3 hours. I will also let Angie's List know and see what they can do about it. I will update my review with regards to how the company handles this.
"Work was performed by one of our best, longest employed crews. The crew did not at anytime work slow. It is their job to take care in handling a shippers household goods and balance the time it takes and the care it takes to have a successful move. This move was from an apartment with some stairs to a high rise apartment on the 8th floor. The move with the stairs out of the apartment took 2 hrs and 15 minutes to load into the truck. Drive time which is doubled per PUC regulations (15 minutes doubled to 30 minutes) is added onto the time. Delivery was to a high rise apartment on the 8th floor. There was a long carry of approximately 45 feet from the elevator to the truck and another 15 feet from the elevator to the apartment door. The elevator the crew had to share with other people sometimes waiting up to 45 minutes for it to become available between trips. Delivery took 2.75 hours The shipper did not see that the crew was sometimes being held up by the elevator as she was in her apartment during the move in. It takes a lot longer to take things up and down to an apartment in an elevator as you are limited to the amount you can load into an elevator and you have to be careful not to damage elevator doors and walls in the process. The crew (which is up to their discretion) did not feel that the couch would fit through the doorway without either damage to the couch, damage to the walls or doorway, thereby incurring a damage claim. We are required to ask the shipper where she wanted placement of her items as they were walking the items through the front door. Shipper made it sound like all of the crew were feeling unwell which was not correct. One crew member was feeling slightly under the weather but that did not effect the service that we performed for her that day. We feel that she was charged the correct amount for her move. All moves require a window so that the crew can load up the truck and have drive time allowing for traffic. Once they arrived, they would have once again explained(she was explained these charges on the phone when the shipment was booked-as this is standard procedure for us) explained that if the job goes over the 3 hour Angie's list agreement that the charge over that would be $150.00 per hour with a 3% fuel chg. This price is also typed on the Bill of Lading she received on move day so there are no surprises."
The old apartment was on the second floor and they had stairs to contend with. The new apartment had an elevator and the unit was a fair distance from the elevator. They never complained. They never stopped working. It was an even pace from start to finish. While they tried their best to do the move within the three hour deal I purchased it was not possible. When we got to the new apartment one elevator was broken and someone within the building was moving out. The circumstances slowed the process but the movers kept going.
I did have to pay for two hours of service over the three hour deal. Each hour cost me an additional $150. Some insurance was included. When I originally called to set up the date I requested a morning move and was told they would try but could not promise. When I called a few weeks later to confirm they said they saw the request for a morning move and would try but could not promise. The movers called me at 7:15AM to say they would be to my place by 8AM! It was in that call they asked if I needed wardrobes, special packing, packing services.
I would use this company again for moving services.
After they left, I realized they had not unwrapped my BBQ and they didn?t re-attach the small table that was supposed to be on the BBQ. I tried to put it back on myself, but I could not find the bolts. I tried to call the company but they were not giving me a response. I felt like they didn?t round out the customer service area.
They didn?t damage any furniture and they put things where I asked, but they just didn?t exceed my expectations.
