DANIEL'S DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

If you are looking for quality work done in a timely manner by a competent, responsible individual, stay away from Daniel?s Design and Construction. Daniel Guidroz, the owner, is very glib. It became apparent over time that his rhetoric far outstrips his skill and organizing ability. The base Daniel installed had gaps between it and the floor into which one could stick a Phillips head screwdriver (photo below). The base adjacent to the dishwasher was mis-measured, so the base to the left of the dishwasher was about two inches shallow and one inch too narrow (photos below). Daniel didn?t even notice this discrepancy. Moreover, he would become resentful and annoyed, and would make excuses or denials when we pointed out things of this nature. My wife and I ended up being the quality control for the job, and Daniel resented us for it. He installed a cabinet with crown, and instead of measuring and placing the cabinet properly, cut a section of the crown to fit over the frame of some sliding door shutters (photo below). He modified and hung a pair of shutter doors. He was very proud of himself until my wife pointed out as soon as she looked at it that one of the doors was upside down. Because the top and bottom of the doors had different dimensions, once he hung one door upside down, the doors no longer matched. This had escaped Daniel?s notice. There were problems with the stain that he put on the maple wood for the cabinet crown for the existing cabinets and for a cabinet and sink overhang that he made. Only later were we told that one doesn?t stain maple. The correct technique is to put the stain into the lacquer. A painter reviewed the texturing work he had done on the ceiling and asked, ?Did unskilled laborers do this?? Four months into a job that should have taken four weeks, I fired Daniel Guidroz. We had a competent general contractor who is also a master woodworker come in. Upon seeing the work Daniel had done, and upon being apprised of other aspects of the job, this individual advised us that we had a legitimate reason to file a complaint with the State Contractor?s Licensing Board. In the end, all of the floor base molding and cabinet crown that Daniel installed was torn out and replaced. The cabinet he made was torn out, discarded, and rebuilt, as was a sink overhang that he built and installed. We also found it necessary to have an electrician re-do some electrical outlets that Daniel had installed improperly. The new contractor, GNA construction (which I am reviewing separately), managed to do in three weeks what Daniel Guidroz could not accomplish in four months, and do it superbly. There were a few things Daniel managed to do well, such as re-position an air conditioning vent and install an oven and microwave. I would consider him qualified to be a handyman, but not a general contractor. Overall, our experience with Daniel?s Design and Construction was an excruciating nightmare
