Earth Bound homes

About us

Earth Bound Homes is a Santa Clara based General Contractor specializing in custom zero energy and low energy sustainable new homes and home renovations throughout the Peninsula and South Bay Areas. Earth Bound Homes has built the highest Green Point Rated home in California (309 points), has built several Zero Energy/Zero Carbon and LEED Platinum Homes, and is currently in construction on what will be the highest scoring LEED Platinum home ever built in the United States. As a seasoned general contractor and PhD level scientist, Earth Bound President Dr. David Edwards’ extensive research into the best practices and materials available for sustainable home building and remodeling has resulted in homes that are the healthiest, most durable, and highest quality. Dr. Edwards personally scrutinizes everything that goes into Earth Bound projects, is a local authority on green building and building science, and writes on green building topics on his blog which can be linked to from our website; www.myearthboundhome.com. Earth Bound Homes are characterized by industry leading: • Energy Efficiency: Earth Bound Homes has built several of the most energy efficient homes in the country including several zero energy homes. The owners of Earthbound built homes typically save 75-85% on their energy bills and up to 70% on their water bills. Our model house in Santa Clara, a 3100 sq. ft. home to a family of 5, has utility bills that average $13 per month. • Quality: By using high quality materials and best, most cost effective building practices, our homes are stronger and longer lasting, and require far less maintenance and fewer repairs, saving you precious time and money, all year, every year. • Lack of Toxic Materials: Unlike 99% of other builders, Earth Bound Homes uses no toxic materials in our homes. From plywoods that don’t off-gas formaldehyde to low and no-VOC, water base paints and finishes, you can be sure that the materials used in your home are free of toxic solvents, poison chemicals and carcinogens. • Better Value: We work with you and your architect on a vigilant value engineering process which enables us to significantly reduce project costs without sacrifices in aesthetics or quality.

This was not a good experience. Not at all.
Earthbound Homes are not knowledgable, and cut costs -- and corners -- by employing subcontractors who are also not knowledgable. The results are horrific.
We are terminating them and seeking damages. Incidentally, we know (from the owner of Earthbound) that they were recently also terminated from another job in the neighborhood.
If you are still considering using them, please ask a reputable architect for an opinion. Architects know what builders are good -- and which ones are to be avoided. We wish we had taken this caution.

Started out OK, work started late summer '09 with contract to complete within 3-4 months - never done after 1 year.  Contractor got bigger jobs, neglected to order windows, so home was not "tightened up" when rain came, wrong windows ordered, estimates for subcontractor work doubled, subcontractors worked after hours against city rules, continuous mess left, debris never "broom clean" as specified, contractor never came again to site or stand in for inspections, billed for work not completed, liens & lawyers involved so proof of negliance clearly documented.  Don't say I didn't warn you.
