Letter written to the owner which resulted in no response
Randy,
I am writing to you personally after many attempts to reach you by phone to resolve or settle our moving claims. It has been 22 days since our move and I still have not been able to get a clear response to the repair or replacement of the damage or broken items I experience during the move. Rick came and glued the table leaf and did some repair to the Amour. However, he
still needs to return to finish the job. He could not give me no clear date as to when that might be.
When I engaged your service it was after a research of recommended movers. I got three bids. Besides knowing you personally,
your company came highly recommended by several people, my realtor and Angie’s list. Your bid was similar to the others
but because of our personal connection, Mike and I chose your company. At the time of the estimate, we discussed a
second drop to storage and a possible drop at our son’s. I restated to your receptionist, when I booked the move date that we would need to drop items off at storage.
The day of the move, your driver arrived on time and I was feeling good about the move. That started to change when he became very upset about a second drop and things went downhill from that point on. I had clearly marked the boxes for storage with labels written in large print the word STORAGE and highlighted them with yellow. Several times during the morning, he asked
what was “storage” and I repeated and pointed out the storage items. There was some damage done to the bedroom door
while moving out and the top on my Duncan Fife cabinet was broken. I asked that they not lift it by the top and he said OLD furniture just brakes easy?!? I repaired it as best as possible before it left the house.
We then went to storage (which was only a few blocks from our new home) and dropped off what I thought was storage items. I did not inspect the items as I was tired of the driver’s complaints about the 2nd drop. My husband was there to assist them Then he gave him $100 to give $20 to each of the movers for lunch. I don’t know if they got it as none of them ever said anything about it or said Thank you.
At the new home, I had made a diagram of what went where and color coded it. The boxes were marked with pictures to show their placement. No one seemed to read the markings or diagram. I had to direct every move. Half way though, my husband told me there were boxes in the garage below the unit. He tried to tell the driver they went upstairs and he said I told him they were storage. Storage was already dropped off at U Haul so I don’t know why he though the parking garage was OK especially since they were marked FRAGILE /CHINA/ Dining room. I went to the truck where he was smoking and asked them to be moved upstairs and he continued
to argue about the storage ‘thing’. I asked him to not smoke around our boxes and furniture. At his rude response, I turned and walked
away. In a huff, he stacked the fragile boxes 3 and 4 high and dumped them inside the front door.
As the damage became apparent, his indifferent comments about old furniture, ‘it happens’ and total indifference to the amount of damage was most upsetting. The other movers were respectful and helpful.
When we finished and he presented the bill, I asked why it was more than the estimate and his comment was that the 2nd drop
caused it. Several days after the move I found five boxes in the condo that should have gone to storage and in storage I found three more boxes that were not marked for storage. He clearly had a problem with the storage drop!
You (Randy) came the second day to see all the damage and forgot the claim form but fixed the dining room table. I finally got a
claim form after several calls. I filled it out and sent a letter regarding estimate cost for repair. It has been 22 days since our move and I still do have an answer about the chair, lamp, missing crystal (all were packed or wrapped by your movers).
Randy, the items I packed moved without a single problem. The items that were broken or damage happened by your movers. With all the great letters, and recommendations, I expected nothing to be damage. Clearly the damaged happen because my items were not loaded or packed in the van correctly. Now, 22 days later, I still have not heard from you regarding the repairs or replacement of the lamp, crystal, or chair. The broken leaves have been fixed but still show the brake and have some areas of raised wood and the
amour is not finished.
How and when can we resolve and finish this move? Every time I walk in and see my favorite
chair with three holes in the back, I get very upset over again. This chair had been my Dad’s and I had it
recovered ten years ago. It has very special memories. I plan to have it recovered and I need to know how you plan to resolve it. I have already purchased a new lamp since you told me to and I sent you the cost for the replacement. I have no idea how I can find a matching crystal for the lamp.
I am sorry this move did not go as either of us expected, but I want to move ahead and can’t until we can resolve all the issues. I paid
the full amount of the moving expecting you would take care of the damage. With other contractors, if there is a problem, I would hold back a portion until the project is finished. I trusted you would resolve it honorably.
P.S. Several days later I was told they would give me $60 dollars to re cover the chair which is only %10 of the estimate I got. He argued that the insurance only covers .60 cents on a pound. BUT I argued that this was not an accident , it was gross neglect by the mover/ driver who had a attitude problem. Even with the glued wood items that were broken, I guesstimated about $800 in repair or replacement costs for the chair, lamp and crystal which had intentional damage.
