These guys are great. The best thing about them is, they are part of a dying breed all too rare in contemporary America.
They are a family business going on two or three generations, where their trade is part of their identity. It's more than
just a job where they put their time in to collect their paycheck. For them, quality work is a source of pride and
satisfaction. The better they do professionally, the better they feel psychologically.
The watch is running perfectly. It was losing about 2 minutes a week. Now it's keeping perfect time.
Vilicich represents a distinct type of service professional which is sadly dying out. I wish we had more like them. Too many repair
shops are quick turnover, volume production places only interested in making a profit. They don't take professional pride or
personal satisfaction in their work. They also have a tendency to try to gain customer loyalty by emphasizing image over true
quality. These businesses put too much emphasis on glamorous décor or hiring salespeople with fashion model good looks.
However, the actual quality of their service is mediocre.
Vilicich is an old family business and their hearts are really into their work. They come on as an old European style business
which believes doing a good job is a matter of honor and personal ethics. They don't need to use a glamor image to win my
loyalty. Their work ethic speaks for itself.
The watch I brought in had been very badly damaged and most places wouldn't want to touch it. So, even if it never works
perfectly, I will still maintain they do great work.
Last week I stopped by for a routine service adjustment. They instantly recognized who I was. They really care about
doing quality work. We live close to their shop, but even if we were living far away, it would be worth a long drive to get
there.
Also, the work was performed at their shop at 714 Weymouth Avenue, San Pedro CA 90732. It was not performed at
1937 Mount Shasta Drive, San Pedro CA 90732 as indicated below.
We asked Vilicich if he would be willing to work on it, and were half expecting him to say no. Bur surprisingly, he said they could do the work. After the first attempt, it worked pretty good, but was still losing more time than it should. We took it back, and Vilicich said due to the severity of the damage it would take more than one try. Now it works very nicely.
The $800 they charged may sound like an awful lot, but considering the amount of work they put into this, we feel their fee was very reasonable.
The business itself is interesting. In this day and age of large chain corporations and mass scale, and quot;cookie cutter stamp outand quot; production, Vilicich is a throw back to an earlier era. It's a second generation family business. It has the and quot;Old Worldand quot; flavor of a European master craftsman who takes great pride and personal identity in his work. The shop itself is on a smaller street in the older part of San Pedro, Los Angeles County. It's unpretentious and plain. But the sincereity and skill of the personnel more than makes up for the lack of glamour.
Frankly, the glitzy image of large, brightly lit jewelry stores at the mall, with plush decor and salesmen in suits is a put off. It makes me wonder if they need the glamour to compensate for mediocrity. I speak from experience, because I've dealt with those establishments. Some of their personnel come on as salaried employees just putting in their eight hours so they can collect their paycheck and go home. And I wonder if their watch repair people really have a lot of experience, or if they merely passed some minimal standard technician school.
Great place. We'll return them.
Jerry has helped me out in the past -- over 5-8 years, perhaps.
Always excellent service.
