Rafael Lugo did a GREAT job. In addition to leaving us with beautifully refinished floors, he went the extra mile: he moved the furniture out of the five rooms being refinished and moved it all back when the floors were completely dry -- AND put new felt pads on the feet of all the chairs, tables, bed, dressers, etc, before putting the furniture onto the newly refinished floors. He very carefully covered all my doorways, closet doors and cabinets with plastic and tape to keep dust out. His sanding machine has an attached vacuum to capture nearly all of the dust. And at my request, he gave my kitchen butcher block island top a sanding - it looks like new now. Rafael himself and two workers did the job -- I appreciated that the owner is on the job site and doing the work every day along with his crew of two.

Both Rafael and Victor were prompt, courteous and really knew what they were doing. They said it would take a week and that's exactly how long it took. My new hardwood floors looks gorgeous and I would recommend them to anyone needing hardwood floor installation, refinishing, etc. They are a pleasure to work with and instructed me as to the care of the new floors. They even fixed my almost 100 year old dining room table leg!

I can't say enough good things about Rafael and his team! We love the floors, his work is high quality (he doesn't cut corners) and he's extremely responsive. He clearly wanted us to have exactly what we wanted even when it was more work or more difficult for him.

This is the second time Mr. Lugo has refinished floors for me. He is extremely professional, and will not do a job that he cannot be proud of. He is punctual and communicative, allowing consultation at all stages of the process. He wants the customer to be very satisfied with the job done. I was moving, so the house was empty. Mr. Lugo solicited my input on the color of the stain, and mixed and displayed several colors until I selected the one I wanted. The entire process took 5 days, one for carpet removal, sanding and counter sinking the nails that stuck up in the floor. There were several small areas that needed repair or replacement. The following day he put on a substance that covered the nail holes, then sanded the floors again. Then the floors were stained, and the stain allowed to dry. Finally, three coats of polyurethane were applied, and each given 24 hours to dry. It is a long process, but necessarily so to do it right. Mr. Lugo cleaned up the house when the job was complete. I am extremely happy with the floors and with the way the job was done.

Rafael was very responsive - responded to voicemails within 24 hours. We had a general idea of what we wanted and discussed them with him on the phone. He came out to our place (exactly at the time scheduled), measured thoroughly (unlike another contractor who 'visually estimated'), went over subfloor options, looked over damaged areas and suggested possible solutions (narrower boards are less susceptible to cupping from high humidity, etc) and gave us a few ideas of what might work based on our ideas. A few days later he came back with a detailed estimate, clearly outlining costs for materials and finish options and a rough timeline. He also brought sample boards to show us the difference in white vs red oak and water vs urethane finishes, which was useful to see in our own house lighting. After we selected the wood and finish, he gave us another estimate with additional changes we requested - for a border and new heating vent covers, including the amount of time needed to get an odd-sized cover custom made. The cost was not the cheapest quote, but was reasonable based on what we had researched. Payments were scheduled in 4 installments, with 50% required to order the materials. The final installment of 10% was due in the final week of work. (After the floor was mostly installed, he discovered that one area was not level and needed an extra layer of subfloor to even it out. The extra cost was minimal, but we wished we could have known about the possibility at the start. Lesson learned - We know now to use a level before any flooring projects) Onsite, he brought one crew member with him. They were punctual, followed the timeline, worked amicably around a few additional vendors we had for other essential work, did not complain about a delay to solve an electrical issue. Rafael allowed 7 days to acclimate the wood before fixing it in place, and turned out a lovely floor on time. It has been almost 6 months and we have no complaints. They needed to move appliances - we have been having minor issues with the fridge and dishwasher, but it's very likely they were existing issues - and pointed out a couple of plumbing leaks behind the kitchen counter that we needed to get dealt with immediately. They also covered all the cabinetry and went the extra step of covering the stairway to reduce sawdust flying into the other areas of the house. They cleaned up all the debris, old carpet and flooring, etc and left the house very clean on departure.

I can't recommend this company highly enough. I got their name from a satisfied next door neighbor who had his floors redone by them. His only regret was that he didn't follow all the company's suggestions. Rafael, the owner, was the most knowledgeable of all the men I interviewed and had some wonderful suggestions. His prices were better than anyone else's and the job well done. His cell phone number as of September 2007 was 650-921-2534.

Lugo Hardwood Floors is owned by Rafael Lugo, who is very professional and stands behind his work. We had recently bought our home, and wanted to install wood floors before we moved in. Rafael agreed to do the job and did excellent work. However, since we live on the coast, the floors soon warped within a couple of months, and Rafael agreed to resand and refinish them at no cost to us as a professional courtesy.
