Acting as an owner/build, I hired Jon based on the good reviews from others in the neighborhood who had used him. This arrangement did not go as well as I wished. He was tasked with bring in subcontractors and other labor. Many of them were sub-par including union rate builders he got from the local labor pool who spent his first hours cutting up sheets of plywood to make himself a work bench and loved to power 5 or 6 nails where 2 or 3 were more than enough. The plumber supplied gave me hot water filling a toilet. Etc.
Given time to live with the end product, I am pretty happy. Had I not been there every minute, I doubt that would be the case. I still think of Jon when I have to push extra hard to open a slider that he did not square before it was cased and walled in.
But Jon did get the job done and put up with my constant supervision and inclusion into the process. I was in the custom yacht building business, and admit to having higher standards than the American building industry. He would not likely want to work for me again either.
