Very well. The work results were excellent and I am very pleased with the outcome. Family and friends have been commenting on the appearance of the roof and the alignment of the tiles. Cal-Pac was not the lowest bidder but I went with them because of excellent recommendations and the concept of using a single manufacturer for the entire roofing system. I also liked the manufacturers inspection and approval of the final job and additional warrantee.

I highly recommend CalPac Roofing in San Mateo. Tony, right from the beginning, was very thorough and patient in helping me choose the correct roofing material. Once the job started, Earl, the supervisor, kept me completely informed of what was happening each day. The crew was hard working, efficient and cleaned up every day!! They were all professional and a pleasure to deal with, including the owner John.

We have only great things to say about Cal-Pac. The entire process from estimate to job completion was extremely smooth and our roof looks great. In addition to the great work, there were a few things that really stood out about Cal-Pac for us: (1) their timely communication, and (2) they really care about the quality of their work. Throughout the entire process, Tony (our sales person) and Earl (our project manager) kept us informed about what was going on. Anytime we had questions we received answers extremely quickly. Prior to installing the new roof, we also had an area that was leaking during the rainy season. Tony came out and patched the area for us to avoid any damage to our home while we were waiting for the weather to clear and have the roof installed. Earl and team then did our install. They showed up timely every day during the install and made sure the area was clean when they left each evening. We were also planning on replacing pool solar on our roof once the new roof was installed and were extremely concerned about roof penetration from the solar (our prior solar install caused a lot of issues with our roof). To avoid any future issues, Earl coordinated with our solar company to ensure that the solar was put on the roof with no penetrations. He even came out and reinspected the roof after the solar was on to make sure it met his requirements. In short, Tony, Earl and Cal-Pac are A+.

The estimate was quickly scheduled (unlike other companies that made me wait for over a week or two) and Brian was friendly and informative.  He went up on the roof to take a look and wrote up a prelim estimate for the job.  A lot of other estimators didn't even bother going up on the roof to inspect it.  Cal Pac was one of the more competitively priced bids and they were GAF Master certified with the lifetime warranty, so I went with them.
The job started ahead of the scheduled time frame they first gave me, so that was a good surprise.  The job started on a Tuesday and ended four days later.  As far as I could see, the work was done quickly and efficiently using the correct materials.  I marked them down on the "Professionalism" grade because the job site wasn't cleaned up as well as I would have liked, especially after the first day of during the roof tear off.  I found lots of old shingle pieces and pieces of wood shards around the back and front of the house.  I also found quite a few nails as well (three nails on the driveway which would have been bad for my wife's car when she came home).  I think they probably just cleaned the house 2-3 feet around the house and didn't really inspect the rest of the lot.
I marked them down on the "Responsiveness" grade because after the job was finished on that Friday, I didn't hear from them the entire next week.  The final inspection wasn't complete and they still had their sign out front on my yard.  After the week of not hearing from them, I called to see what was up and they quickly scheduled the final inspection a few days later.  They basically got free advertising from my house and I wonder if that would have been the case indefinitely unless I called them.
Despite the down marks, I would still use them for a roofing job as I believe their work was solid and their price was much better than most of the competition.

"Cal-Pac Roofing would like to thank you for the review and the constructive comments. It is our goal to have every job go smoothly and cause no inconvenience to the customer. Although it is sometimes difficult to find and remove every scrap of debris following the tear-off of an old roof, more attention to detail could have prevented you from having to check up after the crew. As to the final inspection, San Bruno does require the building inspector to physically verify that your home has carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, per the building code. There was a short delay to coordinate with you to be available for the inspector to have inside access for the verification. These issues have been brought to the attention of the crew leaders and office personnel to help prevent it from happening on future jobs. We are glad to hear that you were satisfied with the installation and that you recommend us and would use us again for your own roofing needs. Thank you for working with Cal-Pac Roofing."

Cal-Pac was luckily the place I went to after a long frustrating search with other roofers who basically only talked about composite roofs. I didn't like the look of the composite and hated to give up the look of shake. Dropping by their office, I met Mr. Rossi who introduced me to Decra Shake (stone-coated steel tiles) and gave me addresses of houses to look at to judge. We went with Decra, even though it costs a bit more. Apparently many roofers don't know how to do this kind of roof, so you have to find one who really knows the business. Laying the roof over our old roof added more insulation to the house, and also a roof with much longer life than composite. The workmen were very hard-working, extremely polite, all spoke English, easy to work with in every way and cleaned up after themselves. I would recommend this company to anyone with no reservations.

Not a complaint so far ... And it already rained. I felt the job went very well. Mr. Rossi came to my home to discuss the bid. The crew was assigned when he said and they showed up when they said. Job was done and absolutely no mess left. The roof looks beautiful.

My mother's Eichler(flat roof) in Burlingame has been in need of a roof for a couple of years now, but we were not looking forward to the ordeal of stripping off the old roof and dealing with the mess that we had 22 years ago the last time the roof got replaced. Cal-Pac was doing a home similar to ours a few blocks away, so when it was done, we went and talked to the owners about how things went. They were quite pleased and mentioned how it was noticeably cooler in the house during the 3 days of warm weather that we'd just had. They gave me Tony's phone number and said that they'd be happy to refer me to him. So I called Tony and he came out and met with me and my Mom and explained all about the Duro-Last system that they use, and what could be done to mitigate the mess inside during construction. We felt very comfortable with him and after a couple of days of figuring out the finances, called him to get the job scheduled. When it started, they sent out one of the guys, Brian, to help tarp my Mom's furniture! It was still a little messy, but 22 years of dust is hard to control. We were thrilled by the "hand holding" that went on during the job, and literally one day after the roof was finished, we got hit by a huge storm, and NO MORE LEAKS!!! I know it's difficult to get excited about a roof, but this went so well, that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tony and Cal Pac to anyone that would like a professional job done by a team that obviously knows what they're doing.

The roof was installed in late summer/fall of 2006. At the time of installation, Cal-Pac told me they would specifically look at the area where the leak was occurring ? ?leaking section near chimney? (as stated on contract) ? to ensure that there was no damage incurred by the pre-existing leak. This is noted on the roofing contract; it was clear that the specific leak near the chimney was the issue. My roof still leaks in the same spot, despite many attempts to get Cal-Pac to fix the leak. Cal-Pac now claims the original leak is not related to the roof at all ? blaming it on the chimney mortar ? which leads me to conclude that a new roof was not necessary at all, as Cal-Pac had suggested when they sold me the roof. Rather, if what Cal-Pac now maintains is true ? that the leak is unrelated to the roof ? I should have been advised that the leak was outside the realm of the roofing and not something Cal-Pac could assist me with. Given this, I believe a refund of the nearly $15,000 roofing cost is the appropriate resolution to the matter. (Note that I am compromising by not asking for reimbursement to repair/repaint the damage to my home as a result of the leak, the painting of the flashing as a result of Cal-Pac?s installing the wrong color, or the inconvenience caused by the whole ordeal.) More background: Following roof installation ? in January 2007, January 2008 (multiple times), February 2009 and November 2009 ? leakage occurred in the same spot as the pre-existing leak. At first, Cal-Pac was responsive to my calls and would come to look at the leak. Twice they blamed the leak on debris in the drain; however, clearing the debris did not solve the problem. The roof still leaks, and my living room continues to get further damaged with each heavy rainstorm. (In addition to the continued leakage in the pre-existing spot, the roof pools water in areas.) When Cal-Pac became unresponsive to my further attempts to get them to address the leak ? again, the original leak I had hired them to fix ? I took a stronger approach with them and demanded they fix it without further delay. It was only then that Cal-Pac told me that the leak was beyond the scope of their responsibility. They suggested it was faulty chimney mortar rather than the roof. If Cal-Pac was an experienced and qualified roofing company, why did it take them nearly two years to identify the source of the leak ? especially when they were aware that the leak location was ?near the chimney? from the outset? I wonder, if the leak I was experiencing was not due to a faulty roof ? the very leak I had called Cal-Pac in 2006 to fix, and which is noted on the contract ? why then did Cal-Pac sell me a new roof as the remedy for it? I tried for more than two years to be patient and work with Cal-Pac to get them to fix the leak; the original work was completed in fall 2006 and my last contact with them was in December 2008, via the Better Business Bureau. After attempts to resolve the matter via the Better Business Bureau failed to come to a mutually-agreeable resolution, I have not contacted Cal-Pac and have since been pursuing other means of resolving the matter. Response to Cal-Pac?s comments: Contrary to Cal-Pac?s claim, it simply is not true that I contacted Cal-Pac to install a new roof. They were contacted because of a leak. It is specifically mentioned in the contract. They sold me an entire new roof to resolve the problem. When it did not, they found debris in the drain and blamed it on that. However, once the debris was cleared, it did not solve the problem. The leak has never disappeared during significant rain. Therefore, debris was not the cause of the problem as Cal-Pac has claimed. Now they point to the chimney block as the source of the leak. If this is indeed the problem, then I did not need a new roof that they sold me. Cal-Pac has failed to take full responsibility for the continuing leak and the fact that they sold me a new roof that did not solve the problem. I?m not sure how their records can claim that the January 2008 service resolved the matter, given our continued correspondence throughout 2008 until December 2008. I have never suggested that the issue is resolved; quite the contrary. However, at some point, you need to go on to other means beyond contacting the company that is not resolving the situation. I have had to repaint the living room several times. At some point you say, ?enough.? I just want to be finished with this contractor and want my money back that I paid for the roof. Others should also know that, if there is a problem with the roof after Cal-Pac repairs/replaces it, they should not expect a satisfactory resolution.

We were referred to them by a co-worker of mine who had them install a composition shingle roof 2 years ago. They took a little longer than they estimated (by 1 day) but the job was difficult due to it being steep and it came out just as we had hoped. We asked a lot of questions before and during the work and the installers were very nice about answering them for us. We weren't excited about putting a new roof on but it looks so good that I wish I'd done it a couple of years ago!

Not happy. Gutters sit one inch above existing fascia boards. Appear to leak as well. Have called to have them come out to fix, but have not returned my calls. Gutters installed by screwing through gutter into wall instead of using a bracket. This might cause leaf debris to catch inside of downspout, causing backups. Just not impressed. Did damage to fascia boards when removing old gutters, moved position of satellite dish when asked specifically not to touch. Will not use again. Also disliked how the salesman for the gutters said that he was the guy who sold us our roof. Ha! Michael is not spelled Iain.
Response from Cal-Pac Roofing of San Mateo
"Our records indicate the gutters installed were completed on July 31, 2006. The only request for service came on August 2, 2006 when there was no rain in the area, and we have not heard from them since. We assume all is well."

It still leaks in one place whenever it rains. I called them and they came out a few times, but haven't been able to take care of the problem. The last time I called them, they said they would get back to me and I haven't heard from them.
Response from Cal-Pac Roofing of San Mateo
"A new roofing system was installed in 2003. After several service calls from 2004-2006 the chimney cap was finally repaired by a sheet metal shop, which seemed to solve the problem. In 2007-2008 a new problem was reported involving ponding water on the flat portion of the roof. After extensive water testing of the section in question a temporary repair to raise the low spot was attempted, with no real success. In 2008, with the cooperation and understanding of the member, the area of roofing in question was completely opened up and the cause of the problem was found to be a leaking drain that went through an exterior wall. The drain was completely eliminated and the problem resolved. There have been no further reports of problems from the home owner."

TO DO SOME OF THE REMOVAL, THEY SUBCONTRACTED WORKERS WHOM WANTED ENTRY TO MY HOUSE, TO GET TO THE ROOF. CURRENTLY, ON THE FLAT PART, WE STILL HAVE LEAKS. DURO-LAST PRODUCT IS NOT RECOMMENDED. FLASHING WAS DONE VERY POORLY, AND GUTTERS ARE NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY. MAJORITY OF WATER IS LEAKING ON SIDE OF HOUSE.
Response from Cal-Pac Roofing of San Mateo
"Our records indicate the roofing project was completed in 2002. The only service request was for a leak in December 2004. The installation department inspected the area and discovered dry rotted siding to be the cause, not the roofing material. The home owner was informed of the findings and it was recommended to replace the siding, after which Cal-Pac would return to flash the new siding at no additional cost. There has been no further contact from this home owner, so we must assume all is well."
