I gave Jan at SewingMachinesPlus.com a list of the features I wanted and my budget. She demonstrated three machines she thought would work for me. I went home to research those machines, and returned with a sample of the Sunbrella fabric I occasionally sew on. She and her supervisor conferred and decided I needed a heavier duty machine so she patiently demonstrated another three. Again I went home for more research and discovered my perfect machine, which is a model up from one of the floor models Jan had shown me. They had it in stock so I bought it. It is heavy duty enough for my occasional Sunbrella projects, it does everything I want, I'm not paying for features I'll never use, and it was even under budget.
I never would have been able to accomplish this without SewingMachinesPlus.com's and Jan's expertise. For example, I was surprised to learn from Jan that some sewing machines now have a push button instead of a foot pedal, and have only one sewing speed. If I had purchased a machine over the internet or at a big box retailer, I would not have thought to look for features like a foot pedal and likely would have been disappointed with my purchase. Instead I'm confident I made the right choice.
