Catherine M.
Dec 2008
After a satisfactory proposal, we hired Mr. Rooter to install a gas tankless water heater. Once the work was completed by a company technician, we noticed the job seemed less than professional. The vent was placed directly under the kitchen sink window. Whenever I ran the hot water, I could smell gas fumes. It didn't seem safe. In addition, the ducting under the house was not secured to anything. Not knowing a lot about plumbing, we weren't sure if this was "normal". We contacted another plumbing company in town (Power Plumbing) and had them come out to check things out. To say that they were shocked is an understatement. The technician thought the job was so bad, that he immediately called the owner of Power Plumbing, a master plumber, to come out. Upon his arrival, he began to take pictures of the poor installation and offered to write a letter documenting the problems that needed to be resolved. He felt that the corrections should be done ASAP, since there were safety issues involved. He even suggested we report this to the state contracting board. Once we presented these findings to Norm, owner of Mr. Rooter, he offered to make the corrections, although his attitude was less than pleasant. In addition, each step of the way require us to call and call and call. Norm was very unresponsive. We weren't interested in having Mr. Rooter repair the work since we weren't convinced they would do a better job the second time. We asked, instead, that Mr. Rooter cover the costs of having another plumber redo the work ($1550 estimate). He agreed to pay $500. Obviously this would have not covered the repair. After many phone discussions with an unpleasant Norm, we agreed to let him personally do the work. Most of the corrections were made and we were happy with the results. Unfortunately, a crawlspace access door was changed during the first installation. As a part of the corrections, Norm agreed to repair the door. This was never done. We've called and called and called. Months later, he sent a technician out to make a new one. The door was way too big. Again, we've called and called and called with no response. The entire experience with Norm and Mr. Rooter Plumbing has been unpleasant. A year and half later, we still do not have the repaired access door. Now we're getting an error message on the water heater that says to contact a professional. We would not recommend Mr. Rooter plumbing to anyone!
