My wife comes home to a note on the door from the gas company that indicates we have a leak and the gas is turned off - call a plumber. I was out of town for work .
Day 2
I contacted Jerry's Wednesday morning and they said they could send someone out between 1 and 5pm, so my wife took 1/2 a day off of work so she could meet with them. The plumber arrived about 10 minutes past 4 and said he needed to isolate the line between the meter and the house so he could pressure test the line. He crawled under the house and was under there for at least 15 -20 minutes, said he shut off the valve and said he did not have any more time that day and he would come back Thursday to pressure test the line.
Day 3
My wife takes another 1/2 day off of work because the plumber estimated he would be there at about 1pm. He opens up the meter box to pressure test the line, and noticed an obvious hole in the line coming from the meter. When he noticed the hole he said he could not go any further until the underground utilities were marked. He said we would likely need to jackhammer the sidewalk and the driveway in order to replace the line from the meter to the house. The marking process could take up to 48 hours and he said he couldn't come back Saturday unless we wanted to pay double time, so my wife made the appointment for Monday morning.
Day 4
I come home from work at about 4:30 to find that the street, the sidewalk, our driveway and lawn had been painted and marked by the utility companies in three different colors. I decided to take a look for myself in the meter box and noticed the obvious hole in the line. I decided to dig a hole to expose the line outside of the meter box to see how it looked. This took 5 minutes. I saw that the bad section was a 13 inch section of pipe between the meter and the first 90 degree elbow. The elbow and the rest of the pipe looked great. At this point I called Jerry's back to see about getting a guy out on Saturday to replace the 13 inch section of pipe as we were getting desperate to get the gas turned back on, double time or not. When I called Jerry's the woman I spoke to said Saturday's were billed out like every other day and she could have a guy out between 11 - 1pm on Saturday.
Day 5
A different plumber showed up around 1pm on Saturday. He removed the bad section of pipe, pressure tested the line and then replaced the 13 inch section of pipe that was bad. I noticed that when he was removing the pressure tester that there was some water coming out of the line, but when I inquired with the plumber he said there was nothing to worry about. After he left, I crawled under the house to turn the house valve back on (turned off on Day 2 by Jerry's Plumbing) and found out that it had never been turned off in the first place - it was on the whole time. We then called the gas company out to turn the gas back on. When the gas company came out they noticed that after they turned the meter back on the gas was not reaching the house. They locked our meter back up and told us to call the plumber back out. I disconnected the line where the line had been replaced and blew compressed air from the house to the meter and a bunch of water came out. I blew it out about a dozen times until no more water came out and then put the pipe back together and called the gas company back out, by this time it was about 8pm. The gas company showed back up about 9pm, turned the gas on, lit the pilot lights and we were done.
Day 6
Nothing happened
Day 7
8am - my brother-in-law notices a Jerry's Plumbing van outside our house. He asked them (the original plumber from Day 2/3) what they were doing. They had their tools spread out, the meter box opened and were preparing to disassemble the pipe that had just been replaced. My brother-in-law explained that the pipe had been fixed / repaired by Jerry's Plumbing and they looked shocked. They asked if there was anything else they needed to do, but there was not, so they left.
