Found reviews for Stoneridge Roofing on Angie's List to be positive, so I thought I'd get an estimate. Saul was on time and very professional. The product (roofing shingles) was exactly the color I was looking for, and his price was well below other estimates. Others had warned me to and quot;never go with the cheapest estimateand quot;, but with references provided I was able to judge his work to be very good.
The work was promised to be finished in 2 days, but it took 3. I had no problem with that. I understand contractors often come up against unforeseen obstacles while doing a job, and this was no different. His crew really worked their tails off, and this was the week where temps were almost 100! I made sure I had a cooler with soda and ice tea for the crew. They were polite and courteous at all times.
All-in-all I'm satisfied with my new roof. It looks fantastic and the price was great!
I have only a couple of not-so-positive comments: The rain gutters were installed poorly. 2 of them were 'sloped' the wrong way, so the water would flow away from the downspout! I think Saul sub-contracts the gutters to another person, so it's not entirely his fault, but I wouldn't use them again if I were him.
To his credit, Saul promptly addressed and corrected these issues and was very professional about any questions or complaints I had. I would recommend Stoneridge Roofing to others (especially if you're on a limited budget like me!).
I decided I wanted CertainTeed LandMark TL composite shingles since they are triple layer, weigh about 305 lbs per square, very good reviews on Consumer Reports, most new construction homes use them, also went with an Air Vent ShingleMaster II Ridge Vent, 7/16and quot; Radiant Barrier OSB to keep the upstairs story cooler. I had some dry rot on fascia boards so decided I wanted all 7
fascia boards changed using 2 x 6 Pre-Primed Pine No Knots along with 1 x 3 Shingle Mold and White Nosing. I also wanted one 2 x 4 barge rafter changed which had termite damage and some 1 x 8 lap boards changed. I also had one gutter installed on the side with a downspout. When the bids came in, you can haggle a little bit, e.g. Los Gatos Roofing will give you a $400 Angies List Discount if you are a member, Woods gave a $500 Yelp Discount. But StoneRidge really blew me away with their quote for the same materials and install.
Stoneridge Roofing has over 13 years of roofing experience, if you check the License # 766411 you can see that Saul was originally in sole ownership of his business and then he entered into a partnership with his brother Jose under License# 951530
at https://www2.cslb.ca.gov… They have a C39 license, are Bonded, Insured with Workers Compensation.
All the other bids had these additional charges of $4-$6 ft for rotten timber or $75 per barge rafter or 20% extra for wood replaced, you are not charged these fees with StoneRidge Roofing. I saw a swing of $2.5K for the same materials and work, based on Angies List reviews, Yelp Reviews and referral from my painter who had seen their prior work went with StoneRidge Roofing with confidence.
What also really impressed me about StoneRidge Roofing was the straight forward quote and they cover any dryrot found, all in the original bid. So you know that you will not have to pay a $1 more than what you see on the invoice/ contract, so no nickel and diming afterwards. Saul was very responsive via email and phone with follow up questions. I finally signed and emailed back the contract and scheduled a date based on weather forecast for sun for 3 days. Saul said install could take 2-3 days depending on how the install went, which was fine.
Lorencio and his work crew of 3 to 5 guys (varied by day) showed up at 8am on Wednesday, had the roof torn off, fascia boards removed and install new fascias. Roofing is a noisy process, your house is basically like an oil drum and sound will reverberate through the house when a hammer, or something is dropped on the roof. So be prepared for that if you are home. The crew cleaned up nicely, picking up nails, water bottle, roofing debris and used a leaf blower on driveway and left around 5pm.
The following day on Thursday they had the radiant barrier OSB up, #30 roofing felt which was overlapped 2inches, CertainTeed Landmark TL shingles up with 5 nails per square, Air Vent Shingle Master II Ridge Vent hand nailed with 3and quot; nails, all 2 x 6 fascias finished, 1 x 3 shingle mold installed, 2 x 4 barge rafter installed, they even cut the wood that was extending out to prevent future dry rot and caulked. I also asked them to change the nosing color on side from black to white to match my future paint trim color and they accommodated. They put up a new flashing on the side of the house.
Jose showed up throughout the day to check if I had any questions and concerns, he is very approachable and also reassured me that they could redo anything if I saw any issues, but the work done was flawless. The roofing crew worked diligently for two days and finished the roof. Saul came by on final day to ensure everything was done according to my contract.
I wholeheartedly recommend StoneRidge Roofing, you get a C39 licensed roofing contractor who has over 13 years of business, they offer 10 year warranty of labor on their installation and you get a lifetime warranty on shingles from CertainTeed (which is about 50 years). They had my large roof torn off and installed in two days which was impressive.
