Before I share my experience, I want to highlight two things: 1. I am not a negative Nelly reviewer. I prefer to promote my favorite business so others can enjoy the best service, food, etc. It really stinks that I feel such a strong desire to warn people about this company and their unethical business practices. 2. If you look on Yelp, SJHF has a total of 35 reviews, 7 (now 8) of which are 1 star reviews. I urge you to pay close attention to the hit or miss service this company seems to provide and ask yourself if you are willing to gamble that you'll be one of the unlucky ones who suffers from this company's (& Butch the owner's) negligence, substandard work, and fraudulent practices. We worked with Butch to have new flooring installed in the master bedroom of the home we just purchased. In addition, we asked that all other hardwood floors in the home be re-finished. The job had a 2 week timeline for completion. The day before the job was scheduled to start, my husband contacted Butch to inform him that he discovered "white paint" all over the living room and hallway floors when he removed the carpets. Butch informed us this was done to cover up pet urine but assured us he could work with the floors if extra sanding materials were purchased. We took him at his word as he is the professional and agreed to the extra material costs. Note: This would have been a perfect time for Butch to personally come and view the floors to ensure they could be salvaged. He did not do this. Day 1 of the job: SJHF installers arrive at our home and see the white paint on the floors but again don't bring up any concerns. Instead they install new hardwood floors in the master bedroom and leave. Day 5 of the job: We go to the showroom and select stains (even though Butch insisted that wasn't necessary because he could deliver the light gray stain we sent him photos of - hindsight, we should have saw this as a red flag). The office manager at the showroom confirms the stains we selected are appropriate for our flooring. Day 11 of the job: SJHF installers come back to sand the rest of the house. We are asked to come pick out a final stain. It is only then that we are told the lighter colored stains we selected previously will not adequately cover the damage and we are advised to choose a much darker stain that will cover up the damage. Since we are now in a time crunch and have to move out of our rental house in 4 days, we take the professionals on their word and select the darker stain to cover up the damage. 12 days into the job: We are contacted by SJHF office manager and told the floors look good and are tracking for completion within our time frame. 13 days into the job: We are contacted by Butch (the owner) and told the stain we selected will not cover the damage. Butch then goes on a 5 minutes expletive filled rant about how he hates dishonest people and we should sue everyone involved in the purchase of our home because the floor damage should have been disclosed to us. He then encourages us to come to his showroom RIGHT AWAY to select new flooring (and pay him another $10K to fix what the awful work he'd just done) so he can get it all in place for our move in (cue another red flag). Immediately I find this suspect because he seems shocked that the floors didn't turn out as he expected. We go in to our home that night to find awful looking floors with obvious stains and terrible workmanship throughout the house(pooled stain throughout the floors, crevices near doorways and closet tracks not thoroughly stained, stain splattered on our walls, greasy smudges on our walls, etc.). The following day we have a reputable floor professional come out to review the work done and he confirms that a professional should have known immediately upon sanding that the floors were not salvageable. Given Butch's extensive history with flooring, I can only assume he either 1) neglected to assess the condition of the floors himself until it was too late, 2) improperly assessed the floors and made commitments he couldn't keep, or 3) knew all along it wouldn't work and fraudulently misrepresented his service abilities. As a consumer who selects professionals to ensure I am properly guided in areas I have no knowledge of, none of these are acceptable. We are now in the thick of seeking legal counsel to recover costs incurred, filing complaints with the CSLB, and are preparing to fight a lien Butch has threatened to place on our new home. It is infuriating to think this could have all been avoided had Butch taken the time to look into the condition of the floors sooner than 2 days before the job was scheduled to be complete. Please heed my warning and if you're going to pay a premium price for flooring, find service provider who doesn't completely fail as a service provider 1 out 5 times.
