We have to thank Gordon for the education he provided during our construction project. Education about how not to do a project, that is. We learned a considerable amount, the hard way, and will not make the same mistakes again. All the fears most folks have about contractors, such as starting the job and disappearing, having a revolving door of subcontractors, going over schedule & budget, lack of responsiveness, pressuring the customer for the final payment before the work is done, making people live with a huge mess, and ongoing nightmares with city inspectors, Gordon provides all that and more!
A few highlights:
- The 3 week job took over 4 months. This did not seem to surprise or concern Gordon. In fact, it seemed perfectly acceptable.
- After starting the job, he and his team would disappear for days or weeks with no notification or explanation.
- He bullied us older folks into providing the final payment before the job was completed, and promptly rode into the sunset.
- His lack of doing the job to code caused multiple unnecessary and expensive city inspector visits.
- Any time his team would not show up as promised, his phone and voicemail mysteriously stopped working.
- He severed our Internet wiring, and failed to notify us or apologize.
If we were to condense all the 4 months worth of work and interactions into a short film, we can't decide whether it would turn out a horror flick, or a comedy of errors. Either way, it was an experience we could have done without.
What boggles the mind is how contractors such as these can continue to get business in a world where customers can communicate and share experiences. Our best guess is they prey upon the trusting and unsuspecting, such as ourselves. All we can do at this point is to share our story, and hope others can avoid the mistake we made by hiring this contractor.
