JG Hellmuth Interior Design specializes in Kitchen and Bath Remodeling. As an independent designer I have the flexibility you may find valuable to produce creative, technically feasible, and fashion forward interiors. Having built my style and aesthetic sense through many years in the custom home business, I have practiced with a keen eye toward home interior trends and cost effective solutions for any range of budgets. Initial consultations are free by phone, initial in-home appointments are $75 (waived for Angie's List members). I will conduct a thorough interview of your needs, your style, and your budget. I met with Jeff in October of 2015 and after a consultation, received renderings and a budget estimate that were exactly in line with what I wanted to get done. The project needed to be done in phases due to logistics (moving/storing furniture, pets, a black mold issue that was discovered, etc). Phase 1 (living/dining room floors, paint & window treatments; den) took longer than anticipated but were well worth the delays. Unfortunately, Phase 2 has been a disaster. After outlining with Jeff in August several concerns from Phase 1 (entering my condo without notice or authorization, unscheduled; request to stop using unlicensed sub-contractors (a big HOA and personal liability issue for me); time-lining (working with my tight work schedule to allow for pet-sitting, subs and furniture moving/storage) and security (Jeff had given my condo key to "someone" but couldn't remember who), Jeff claimed that I was causing him intolerable stress and 'ordered' me to not communicate with him for a number of weeks. As of this review, Jeff has not followed up other than to confirm that he had cancelled master bedroom draperies and an offer to make a new key for the front door. At this time, there are several small items from Phase 1 that are still incomplete (paint touch ups; new front door handle/lock; hardware) and Phase 2 will now need to be re-sourced to another provider. Despite being enormously pleased with the work that was completed in Phase 1, I'm afraid that I would not be comfortable referring anyone for his services. For the Rating items below, I am grading a D for Price due to late/missing invoices and using subs for Phase 1 insisting on 'cash' for payment and handwritten receipts. Due to Jeff's histrionics for Phase 2 (email documentation available) and the incomplete status of this project, I must rate the overall experience as Bad.

"[Member Name Removed] was one of my best clients. He was a joy to work with. After completing the work on the living/dining/guest rooms, he wanted to continue with the master bedroom. I designed this room with high quality renderings to show him, I paid for and ordered the drapery fabric for this room, sourced the new carpet and had the quote prepared for him, designed the paint scheme and wall treatments. I received $0 dollars for this work. I made one huge mistake though. I had mentioned to [Member Name Removed] that his drapery was not hanging properly after the installation and I needed to return to steam those draperies in person. I neglected to text him to let him know I would be over to do that on the day I fit it in. Needless to say a meltdown ensued and the relationship came to an end. I'm am still sorry, and I did apologize for that lapse, but I don't believe I deserved the unjust criticisms after the fact, and a number of false claims he has made."

Jeff is a lifesaver. I found Jeff after I had hired and fired a horrible designer who was falling behind and delaying my project. I was so fortunate that the timing worked out and he was able to pick up where the last designer left off. Jeff got us back on track and provided his expertise. He was responsive and worked hard to maintain our timelines. We have completed our remodel and are so thrilled with his work. I would gladly recommend Jeff to any friends or colleagues.

Jeff is the bomb. he listens, he has an astounding knowledge of materials and is really creative. also he's superbly pleasant and personable. I was afraid of working with a designer because I thought we'd end up with something they created but was not us. wow was I wrong. we got a look that is totally us, but infinitely better!
Our job lasted an absurd length of time because we did most of the work ourselves, and Jeff was infinitely patient, and often helped show us the finish techniques we didn't know.

We loved working with Jeffrey. His working style and decorating style were ideal for us. He never pushed or aggressively advocated something just because it was his idea. There was always a healthy exchange of ideas which resulted in a wonderful outcome. Any guests that visit our home are blown away with the transformation and the elegant, inviting and liveable space that has been created. He organized vendors and was at our house regularly to make sure things were getting done the right way and to his exacting standards. Even when the project was nearly complete, he was coming up with suggestions and helping us select the final touches. He was always patient and helped with guidance on decisions but left it to us. We would not hesitate for a second to use him again or recommend as someone looking for a top-notch interior designed. We interviewed a number of candidates but made the right choice in choosing Jeffrey even though we had to wait a bit due to his schedule. We were in no hurry so this was not a problem at all.

"This "B" grade review should have little value since I was not hired. Due to a reluctance to fully engage a designer, I agreed to do one sketch, which took me 4 hours, to give her an idea of what I thought could be accomplished within the scope of her wish list. This ended up not being what she wanted after all, and so I did another sketch, 3 more hours, at no charge. I outlined some ballpark construction figures she could use to help her find a budget, based again on what she desired. I am sorry that this was insufficient, and that it rated a B."

We first met with Jeffrey from JG Helmuth design in February of 2012. We were having a high-end home built in the mountains and needed help in choosing some of the finishing details (or so we thought). We liked Jeff, liked his ideas and really liked that he could bring these flat drawings to life for us. That alone was worth the price of his service. We found a number of aspects in the design that were not acceptable (weird beam placements, a pole in the middle of the kitchen, plus a few more minor problems). With Jeff's help we were able to make some intelligent changes to the design, figure out what additional questions needed to be asked and come up with a floor plan that we are now thrilled with.
Jeff has hung with us through about 20 design changes (okay, maybe not that many, but it feels like it) and 18 months of waiting for weather, contractors and building materials. He has driven to the project site several times (3 hour drive)in order to get a real feel for what was going on. He directly handled the plumbing and lighting materials, double checking them for accuracy and quality before they made the long trek to the house.
We are not yet finished, but we are in the home stretch. In the meantime, Jeff has helped us with a small decorating project at our home in San Jose. And we are thrilled with the results of that design as well. Jeff is very easy to work with, offers a number of alternative ideas, and has a great sense of style. He has been easily accessible throughout the past 18 months and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone in need of a designer.

Jeff was very prompt and responsive, took into account our preferences during the design process. While the work was being done, Jeff would come in to check on the painters, etc. After all the work was done, Jeff came personally and put up our collection of pictures. Our office looks beautiful now.

Jeffrey is was very willing to work with me to understand what I was looking for, not what he wanted to design and went the extra mile to provide me with many options. I especially liked this when I would turn down one of his ideas. He wouldn?t disagree with me but rather, try and understand what I wanted. Jeffrey has a number of painters, plumbers, handymen etc that he already works with and whom he knows and trusts to do top quality work. I counted on all of Jeffrey?s recommendations and I was happy with all of them. Finally, Jeffrey is a nice person. Friendly, honest (I trusted him with my keys for several months while the work was happening) and very easy to work with. I would absolutely work with him again and highly recommend him to all my friends.

Jeffrey was a delight to work with. He not only had wonderful ideas but was very accepting of my ideas. He designed the most incredible backsplash: it is stone tile background with inset colored glass framed with metal details. He managed the project by physically checking in on the project every day. I would happily use Jeffrey for any future remodeling project.

We used Jeffrey's services previously for reupholstery over the last 20 years. This project was more extensive, lasting about six months. He spent a great deal of time with us planning and making suggestions for the work to be done. He was very diligent in finding products and providing us with a large selection of fabrics. He is fair in his prices and wants to accommodate his clients' preferences. If a color or fabric didn't turn out as expected, he was willing to redo the item as economically as possible. He has excellent taste, is very knowledgeable about interior design, and has a lot of excellent sources for products. His web site has extensive lighting sources. He came up with a lot of suggestions for remodeling that were very good but were more extensive than we planned; however, he always respected our choices and limits. We never felt that he was just trying to increase the costs. He was making his suggestions from the point of view of what would be optimal. Some aspects of the project grew organically as time went on, but we were happy with the results. Jeffrey is personable and easy to work with, and we recommend him highly.
