This was an outside deck with cover, so I was concerned about hiring a professional who had experience with this. Among the four I talked to, Jay was the clear winner and got the job. He delivered with an expert tile job. He also introduced me to Denise at the San Jose Tile Shop for selection of tile, pattern and colors.

It went great. Cools Custom communicated a lot with me and got the job done in a timely manner, while interacting well with my tenants. I will hire them again!

New tile looks great - requested grout and caulking repairs blend well with existing grout. Very clean in all cases.

The bathroom, in my rental house, had severe water damage around the bath tub surround. Handymen said the job was "too big". So based on Angie's List reviews, I asked Cools Custom Remodeling to come and evaluate. They looked at the job, bid on it AND started demolition January 10. They had a no-show one day due to the heavy rains. But they still completed the demolition, retile & grout, along with painting the guest bathroom all by January 17. Unfortunately once the drywall was down, they found considerable water damage to studs and black paper. Jay offered a few alternatives, explaining each providing pros & cons, allowing me to choose how I wanted to proceed. This extra work added $800 but at least structure, of the house, is sound again. Jay (father) and Jason (son) were in constant communications, via phone, text & email, with me and the tenant throughout the project. They showed up, as they said they would and finished on schedule. They cleaned up after themselves. The bathroom looks like new. The tenant is extremely happy. The $4,900 price seemed very good considerable the speed and quality of the work. If you’re a homeowner and have ever worked with a contractor, then you know how rare it is to find a company whose service meets or exceeds your expectations. To that end, I highly recommend Cools Custom, a contractor we’ve been working with to remodel our 2 bathrooms. The owner is Jay Cool, and here is what made our experience with him and his company so great… 1) The vanity counter top we had selected didn’t quite match the color of the top that was delivered. Jay stepped in and worked as our champion with all the vendors to ensure the issue was resolved to our satisfaction. He always insist everything be done to our satisfaction. 2) His talented crew is personable, professional, and courteous (plumber, tile person, framers, project manager, etc.). 3) They are the only contractors I have ever worked with who are actually responsive on email and text messages. 4) They really have our best interests in mind; always setting our expectations, and offering things to fix and address that we never considered. 5) They were very flexible and accommodating, happy to help us as we occasionally added extra requests and work to the project. 6) They took great care of our home as they worked, and we were completely comfortable having them in our home. We enjoyed working with them and appreciated the quality of their work so much that we will continue to work with hem on projects for the exterior of our home as well (roof, siding, stone-work, etc.).

We came home from vacation last April and noticed some dark spots on the hardwood floor in our master bedroom…near the wall shared with the master shower…not good. After some initial exploration, we found that a malfunctioning shower valve had been leaking into the wall cavity for about 5 ½ years – lots of mold, rotted studs, subfloor issues, a shower that needed to be completely replaced, along with hardwood flooring in the bedroom. You would think that it would be relatively easy to find a contractor to do this work, but it’s not. Many of the people we contacted just said, “no, we don’t do water damage.” Others thought that the job was too small. Others would do it, but wouldn’t give a firm quote and wanted to charge an outrageous “exploration” fee. Enter Cools Custom Remodeling. From the start, they worked to get our business and treated it as a partnership. Yes, they admitted it was a smaller job for them, but they never made us feel that it was any less important. We had an open line of communication and we always knew where things stood. We had a lot of stops, starts, and delays on the job as we were trying to match specific tile (some of it custom-made) and flooring (and did I mention that we’re sort of super-picky?). They hung in there. If we weren’t 100% satisfied with something, they came back and worked on it until we were. We moved back into our master suite last weekend and the whole thing looks beautiful – just like the disaster never happened. Cools Custom gave us all you can ask for in a contractor: fair prices, good communication, quality workmanship, and willingness to meet expectations. I would recommend them for any job, large or small.

Working with cools custom was seamless. They were very professional and knowlegable through the entire process. They assisted me with remodeling projects on my 60”s home in Los Altos. Their staff was clean, polite and on time for the most part. I can remember only one day they were running late and they called in advanced to let me know, unheard of from the contractors I've dealt with before. They assisted me in selecting materials for the project making a difficult situation effortless, this was the best experience I’ve had with a contractor, I recommend them highly and will use them again for future projects.

Cool's Custom was the only company I called willing to even talk about working within our very tight timeframe before the Thanksgiving holiday. While the work wasn't complete in our (frankly very challenging) timeframe, they made sure we had a working bathroom in time and it worked out. Jason from Cool's custom was extremely nice, frankly a pleasure to be around, all of the subcontractors were great, and the bathroom came out absolutely beautiful. We paid a little more than we wanted to, but accepted that much due to the timeframe. Bathroom was finished much longer than we had intended, but we are extremely happy with the work and working with Cool's custom was a pleasure. Paying a bit more is likely worth it.

Looking back now, a year from the start of the project, I rate the process a moderate success, and the product a great success. I can only point to minor issues on the house that didn’t turn out as expected, and a few (minor) things I would have done differently had I known then what I know now, but for the vast majority everything was great—as promised or better. The basic project was completed close to budget, with one minor unforeseen addition (floor underneath carpeting needed replacement in one spot). The project took longer than quoted with delays on several fronts; some my fault, not so with others. Appliances were ordered, but delivery for some was delayed (wine cooler did not fit the space it was intended for and had to be replaced); second order of floor tiles was (twice) delayed/discontinued/eventually completed; bathroom sink took a long time to receive, delaying completion of that part of the project; ordering closet doors was an ordeal. Final 10% of the project seemed to take forever. Never having remodeled…anything…before, and occasionally not knowing what questions to ask/answers to give, nor understanding the flow/organization of the project delayed some of my decisions/purchases; one of my frustrations was not having a detailed timeline or an expected order of completion for more than one or two steps at a time. The subcontractors all did outstanding work, no issues with workmanship. Some miscommunication of where and how and what, with questions not specified in the plans or proposal, but everything was eventually rectified. Phil T was outstanding, easy to work with, enthusiastic, extremely responsive, experienced, fair and direct. He even dropped by unannounced one Saturday, just to check on progress, and ended up spending an hour discussing options for the remainder of the project. He knows what he’s doing, or finds out quickly and responds. Jason is one of the nicest service people I’ve ever worked with, very low key, easy to talk with, aims to please. I’m not sure he had the experience with this scope of project—or maybe just the scope of This Project specifically--which sometimes left questions unanswered for longer than I would’ve liked. He was not as familiar with the details as Phil (who worked with me as the initial contact with Cool’s) and he often had to say “I don’t know, I’ll get back to you,” on what seemed like fairly standard questions, some of which I had to re-ask in order to get answers.

Cool's Custom did a great job. Jason did a wonderful job coordinating the schedule and updating me. He did whatever that needed to be done to keep the job flowing. The tile work is excellent. I wish that the pictures did it justice. All the trade's people that worked on the job were easy to work with and were great at runner through options with me.

They could have had better communication and better subcontractors in two specialties.

Cool's Custom remodeled the exterior of my house, especially a very wonky front porch. This historic home in Willow Glen had suffered settling in the front porch area, thanks to the drought, sandy soil, and some opportunistic termites. Cracks starting opening in the stucco of one of the front pillars, and went downhill from there. I was beside myself with worry when it just got worse as we discovered more and more damage, but Cool's kept me calm and worked with me to make repairs in stages until it was completely resolved. A final paint job made it all good as new. Cool's was extra helpful with the paint. When the first paint job was unexpectedly shiny, they repainted it without any question, in fact, they suggested it! They won't do a halfway job, not with their name on it. I am so impressed with them. I have referred many friends and neighbors to them, and will use them again on my next project. These are professionals. Not the lowest price, but definitely the highest quality. Highly recommended.

I was very pleased with my bathroom remodel through Cool's Custom. I could scarcely get contractors to call me back for such a small (but complex) job. Cool's was wonderful as we worked through the issues of my small historic home in Willow Glen. This 1920 home was built with, oddly, the toilet separated from the bath and sink by a wall. Both sides were a fright, dark and ugly. Cool's estimator and designer Phil Traina suggested some great details to make the newly opened wall look original. Expert craftsmen in carpentry and tile setting (and a little plumbing) made the job a total success. I was the envy of my neighbors (and their Craftsmen homes) to have such a delightful light and bright large bath, that still felt period correct but new and improved. Cool's gained a fan in me. I used them again for an even bigger project (I'll review that next), and have recommended them far and wide ever since. Cool's was great to work with on my small but complex bathroom remodel. This 1920 home was built with a wall between the toilet and the rest of the bath. The estimator/designer Phil Traina made some great suggestion to make the newly opened wall feel original. The expert carpenter and tile setter made the details perfect. I was very happy with the job they did (limited, as I did some of the work myself), and hired them again for a bigger project later, which I will review separately. See the photos yourself. Before: cramped, dark and horrid. After: light, bright, new but still classic. Cool's is the best.

Cool's Custom, and Phil, were an amazing group to work with. We found them through a designer who ended up leaving us through the project. Luckily, Phil and his team were there! Their people ended up helping us with everything from the actual construction to design aspects of the project! Two of my favorite parts of the kitchen are things that their subcontractors recommended! They were punctual, so so clean and patient. I have 3 young children, and I never worried about their safety even though we had walls come down! We had a complete tear down including wall removal, permit checks, and rebuild in 7 weeks! It was amazing. Their crew was incredibly professional, and their work was top notch. I look forward to using them then next time we need to remodel anything!

We were very pleased with Cool's Customs and have since referred them to friends and family. All the work done met or exceeded our expectations. We had a great deal of work done simultaneously, at one point we had most of our house and yard under construction, and we always found everyone who was working to be professional, respectful and kind. We have two young children and a dog, all of whom can make construction a challenge...every person who came in made a point of reassuring us about safety and also getting to know our family.
