All of Troy Troutmans work was well above the professional norm. His
commitment to detail during all the tile work, and his total attention to the job at hand, has shown well through the finished project. Great work on the bathroom.Simon F.

Pros: Troy offered helpful design suggestions for the tile layout in both the kitchen and bathroom, and the end result is wonderful. He coordinated well with the general contractor and other subcontractors, even having to remove and reinstall tile in the bathroom when the general contractor mistakenly had the shower pan installed too early.
Cons: He didn't seal the tile, which even he found odd, because the general contractor asked him not to. (True, it wasn't part of the contract, but one would think a quick change order could be offered.) He also never got around to applying the grouted caulk around the kitchen tile. We suspect that the general contractor told him not to bother since we already paid for the tile work portion of the contract; still, that made us feel that that was somewhat unprofessional to leave something incomplete (however minor).

"Member, i did give a bid to seal and caulk your tiles, and was told no per ron,and that they would do it themselves. i cant give you a price dirrectly,as it violates my contract with ricky.and i cant work for free either. as it was i didnt get paid in full for your project by ricky untill 4 months after i did the installs,so im guessing you paid ricky,up front and he didnt pay us untill way latter.and trust me my bid to ricky was not 5k it was less than 2k. i thought we did a good job for you,we showed up when we were told to,we fixed the tile when they had to re-do the pan.(they accepted the price to replace the floor tiles where needed then didnt pay us for the repair)we cleaned up the other trades mess, when we cleaned ours. im sorry if you felt like you didnt get what you paid for,and hopefully you have a better understanding,as to what really happened now. you can always contact me directly at 408-893-6170 troy"

Troy and his crew were prompt and efficient. The bid was very competitive and Troy broke it into components because I wanted to do some of the work myself. I learned a lot from them (mainly that this is way too hard to do yourself, especially if you want it done right). I designed the pattern and they helped me figure out the details where needed. The design required a number of detail cuts and small pieces which they executed really well. Troy was helpful in making sure I got the best price on the materials I bought and he picked everything up and brought it to the job site. It turned out great. I recently had Troy do another job tiling the laundry room floor. Since we were changing the hardwood floor next to the bathroom he had done two years before he broke out some tile at the doorway and replaced it with new tile cut to fit the new configuration - for no charge. He also gave me a 10% repeat customer discount on the new work. He also gave me a bid on laying some limestone tile on the outside front porch and steps at a reasonable rate and I plan to use him again.

The tile turned out wonderful! 3/4 of the way through my kitchen, the color changed on the tiles and the lot numbers were the same. They ripped it all out and installed all new. The company we purchased the tiles from had instructed California Fashion Tile to leave the job, but they kept going and took care of the problems.

The project went far better than expected and much better than our experience with past contractors. Troy's crew was timely and really showed an interest to do things right and not cut corners.

I think structurally, the work is sound. Where Troy faulted was in the details. He did not supervise his workers adequately-one of whom was a bull in a china closet. The surrounding floor was not adequately protected. I had to ask 3 times to have a new cabinet protected. An adjacent closet carpet floor was trashed completely(Troy replaced with cedar flooring at no charge). The new paint on walls was trashed, to the point of needing repainting. Grout lines are not uniform - they range in size from none to 1/2 inch. No spacers were used. Corners on bench were chipped off, grout left in closet door tract. The bathroom tile flooring is not level.. there are tiles that are poking up as much as 1/2 inch. Troy had to do the recessed shelf twice because he didn't measure correctly. Responsiveness on the phone was random. The whole job took 6 weeks and it should have been shorter. Troy also re-set tile that popped during the earthquake at no charge. I have more than the 4 pictures.

The owner came to give me an estimate and a couple of weeks later he sent his two employees who were very good at what they do. They had to remove the old grout (which someone had done a bad job on) and redo the two bathrooms. It took a couple of days of long hours and they even came back to do some touch up work when I called. They did not ignore my calls when I wanted the touch up work done.

We had no idea who to contact for tile work, so we checked Angie's List, and found Troy Troutman. Troy Troutman of California Fashion Tile was upfront about the job, pricing, and scheduling. He was a true professional, and went above and beyond to get the job done. Troy was always here when he said he would be, and on time. He is a perfectionist, and this is reflected in the quality of his workmanship. He was accomodating of minor changes in tile layout. We will definitely recommend Troy to friends and family, and would certainly hire him for any future tile work. One of the best, if not the best, experiences that we have ever had with a contractor.
