I took it into Bay Area Computerman where it managed at least boot up, and he quickly figured out that the problem was a conflict at the video card end. The manufacturer had installed the incorrect upgraded video card. Once that was out, the computer ran fine, and has run fine for more than a month now. No more BSoD!
Since it was such a quick fix, there was no charge... needless to say, I am very happy with the work there and will take any further computer problems in again.
They also build and sell new PCs there, FYI.
