Hans Art Automotive

About us

It's hard to know who to turn to for convenient automotive care that's honest and cost effective. For forty five years Hans and his expert team have delivered comprehensive auto service designed to keep your car running like new. All the people at Hans Art Automotive work hard to provide their customers with prompt, professional and courteous service. Hans embarked on his automotive career unexpectedly after fixing a hippy roommate's 1955 Pontiac so it could continue it's service of delivering unusually creative ice cream deserts to the very hip denizens of late sixties San Francisco late into the night. After being proclaimed a genius, Hans, always a sucker for praise, decided it might be a way to work independently and have a lot of free time to pursue a hipper life style while awaiting the revolution. As it happened, work crowded out the life style and the revolution was not televised. Since almost every young San Franciscan had a Volkswagen Beetle of one sort or another, business boomed (some twenty years later, Hans finally figured out that they were lousy cars!). The rest is history. Alternative Phone Number: (415) 403-2020

Very well. My first time using Hans Art Automotive. I liked that they're AAA approved. ASE and Diamond certified. Great online reviews (including on Angie's List). I was able to schedule an appointment for service within a few days of my online request. Sophia was great. She asked me about any concerns I had about my car when I brought it in that early morning. I got a call from Sophia in a few hours with diagnosis. Some parts needed to be replaced. (I have an old car, 2001 Nissan). Sophia advised me that the struts needed to be replaced but I could wait on that repair if I wanted to hold off on that expense and the power steering would need to ordered. I was able to use a coupon from their site for first time customers. I gave the OK for the repairs including the struts and my car was ready for pickup the same day by 5pm. When I picked up my car, Sophia said the hose was ordered and she'll call me when it arrives then an appointment can be scheduled.

I really like them; I go to them regularly.  I keep going back because they seem to be honest.  They don’t try and do stuff that I don’t need.

They determined that there was no oil in the engine and that the engine may be ruined. I advised that I recently had the car serviced at another shop. They decided not to do any work at all so that there was no trouble with Toyota faulting their shop, which I thought was really thoughtful and ethical. He showed me the car and the issues found and advised the responsibility was on the previous shop. I have since had the engine replaced by Toyota at no charge.

Han's Auto made special accommodations to place on the schedule immediately. Our car was towed to their location and the mechanic performed the diagnostic immediately. Han's auto called us the next day and informed us what the problem was which was the battery. I told them to replace the battery. When I picked up the car, Han's went through each item on the diagnostic report. The overall service was professional.

They did their usual great job on the brakes but they were unable to correct the problems with the positraction system which i was told needed to be done by a dealer. I have yet to go to the dealer but will do so shortly

It went great! My brakes had been making his awful noise. I Previously went to Wheel Works, and Stewart Chevolet. Everyone said nothing was wrong with the car. It was a very annoying sound. Hans Art Automotive said that it may be dust. They also said it may not work. I chose to let him clean the breaks. It was worth it!  I rarely hear the brakes and when I do its very low and short. They recommended that I come back in 6 months to have transmission fluid check as preventive maintenance. I have been looking for a reliable, trustworthy and honest  business to work on my car. I am glad that I found them through Angie's List.

Our last maintenance (oil change, tire rotation, etc) was routine, but handled expertly and efficiently as usual.

I have never dealt with an Automotive shop with such a high level of professional courtesy and pride.
My truck presented some very difficult problems to solve and rather than make excuses, the mechanics went so far as to consider taking the vehicle to a local college with more cutting edge technology on hand.
At no point did I ever feel out of the loop with what was happening with my vehicle and they called regularly to update me.
I brought the truck in for a full going over before considering selling it and asked them to check breaks, a possible coolant leak, and some electrical issues. Everything was performed quickly but they discovered that my vehicle was reporting an error that would cause it to fail inspection. This turned out to be a very difficult issue to fix and I'm very grateful that despite the amount of man hours spent on the issue, I was billed a fraction of what it could have cost me due to professional pride and their inability to give up on a difficult problem.

We have used Hans Art Automotive for nearly 20 years and have found them to be fair, responsive, knowledgable, thorough and generally an ideal company with which to do business.  Can't say enough good things about them.  Highly recommended.

I would highy recommend Hans Auto. I called on Friday because my engine light had just gone on again and I decided I didn't want to drive to LA on Tuesday afternoon like that-just in case it really was something. Hans told me to come by on Monday. Liked that:)

Overall Hans Art Auto does a great job. Yes, they are perhaps a little priceier than other shops in the area, but based on my single visit there, it will be money well spent. I have a 5 year old car with 85000 miles on it, and after my recent $2600 investment I will continue to check in with Hans Art, and should I want to continue driving it another 20000 miles I think that I totally could with ease. The car drives great. ( It's not like I took bad care of it before, I have always taken it in for regular maintenace.)

The "check engine" light came on with a degree of regularity, which my previous mechanic had told me was because I can't seem to properly scew on the gas cap, and he had reset it for me once or twice. No biggie. There had also been an annoying "clunking" sound which other mechanics could never hear because it only happened for about the first 15 minutes of driving, and even that was not consistent, and I always had to drive kids to such and therefore by the time I got to the mechanic the noise had stopped.  I also was about to drive to LA in the pouring rain and had kept meaning to get new tires...but, well, yeah.

They told me that it would be cheaper to get tires elswhere, and they were right, but that time/money thing meant that I called them after I had said "Yeah, okay, I'll go to Costco" and changed my mind.  It was more expensive, but the car has new tires, and the ones that I wanted.

The "check engine" light has not come on again.

When I picked up the car they told me that they weren't sure that the clunking noise was gone, and if it hadn't I should bring it back after my trip, and they would continue to scratch their head over it, and try other things.  I was assured that it was not harming the car or endangering anyone in it.  (Which I believed because it has been making that noise for like 2 or 3 years).  The noise was still there, so I brought the car back in, and $116 later the clunking noise is gone and I am driving a car that feels good as new.  Yay.

I mentioned Angies list and was told that it was 10% off (parts?  labor?  I can't remember and I'm not looking at the bill, and, did I mention, I as happy with the work), as it happens I spent enough money that the special listed and 10% were about the same, but the way I look at it, he should know and honor the actual special. Not a deal breaker for me, but just a note. When I came on to write this review and saw what it really was ($49.95 for the 110 pt, usually $200, check) I had a moment of distrust, which I am simply writing off to he's a small business owner and hates giving money away when he doesn't have to to people like me who don't pay enough attention, so, do I need to be a pushier consumer? Dunno, just wish he's gotten it right, because if he had, I would have had zero negative things to say about my experience.

We've been using them for 15 or 16 years. They have done everything over the years. They are honest. We have not needed to shop around. We think they are fairly reasonable but we don't know for sure. It is a good value proposition in our opinion. They are very responsive and will answer any questions that we have.

This was the second time going to Hans. I was able to make an appt the for the next day and they fixed it the same day. Luis is great...super professional and explains issues clearly. I know they are not the cheapest but their shop is convenient and they really strive to make the customers happy. They are a professional run shop which I really appreciate.

My experience with Hans Art Automotive was typical of what I've experienced with them in the past...that being honest, knowledgeable, prompt and friendly service! I've been using them for my auto service needs for the past two years and one of the most important factors in my decision is their honesty when it comes to assessing what needs to be done. I brought my car in for an oil change and to find out the cause of some very pronounced noises the car was making (not typical squeaking sounds that would have indicated brake issues). One of the gentlemen who works there drove the car a few blocks so together we could hear the noises. As it turned out, the noises were the result of worn out brake pads, but to see how badly they were worn, they also did a partial brake inspection while my car was there for the oil change. There was very little (stuff?) left on the front pads (3 or 4 ml??), not sure of the terminology. I couldn't leave the car at that time, but brought it back the next week since by then, the noises had become very loud and a bit scary. By the way, when I brought my car in about a year ago for a full tune up, they advised me that I had about a year left with my current brakes.Turns out they were spot on. Bottom line is that they've never taken advantage of my admitted lack of mechanical knowledge by telling me I needed additional work done when I didn't, and as a single woman, that's huge in my book.

They specialize in German and Japanese cars; I have a Japanese car. This is one of the reasons I initially went there. They really know the car, which is why I keep going back. The owner is pretty interactive with the customers; he's frequently on-site. They're pretty knowledgeable. They're a little pricey, but I have been fairly happy with them. I trust them and think they have been honest with me.
