Hans Art Automotive
About us
It's hard to know who to turn to for convenient automotive care that's honest and cost effective. For forty five years Hans and his expert team have delivered comprehensive auto service designed to keep your car running like new. All the people at Hans Art Automotive work hard to provide their customers with prompt, professional and courteous service. Hans embarked on his automotive career unexpectedly after fixing a hippy roommate's 1955 Pontiac so it could continue it's service of delivering unusually creative ice cream deserts to the very hip denizens of late sixties San Francisco late into the night. After being proclaimed a genius, Hans, always a sucker for praise, decided it might be a way to work independently and have a lot of free time to pursue a hipper life style while awaiting the revolution. As it happened, work crowded out the life style and the revolution was not televised. Since almost every young San Franciscan had a Volkswagen Beetle of one sort or another, business boomed (some twenty years later, Hans finally figured out that they were lousy cars!). The rest is history. Alternative Phone Number: (415) 403-2020

My truck presented some very difficult problems to solve and rather than make excuses, the mechanics went so far as to consider taking the vehicle to a local college with more cutting edge technology on hand.
At no point did I ever feel out of the loop with what was happening with my vehicle and they called regularly to update me.
I brought the truck in for a full going over before considering selling it and asked them to check breaks, a possible coolant leak, and some electrical issues. Everything was performed quickly but they discovered that my vehicle was reporting an error that would cause it to fail inspection. This turned out to be a very difficult issue to fix and I'm very grateful that despite the amount of man hours spent on the issue, I was billed a fraction of what it could have cost me due to professional pride and their inability to give up on a difficult problem.
Overall Hans Art Auto does a great job. Yes, they are perhaps a little priceier than other shops in the area, but based on my single visit there, it will be money well spent. I have a 5 year old car with 85000 miles on it, and after my recent $2600 investment I will continue to check in with Hans Art, and should I want to continue driving it another 20000 miles I think that I totally could with ease. The car drives great. ( It's not like I took bad care of it before, I have always taken it in for regular maintenace.)
The "check engine" light came on with a degree of regularity, which my previous mechanic had told me was because I can't seem to properly scew on the gas cap, and he had reset it for me once or twice. No biggie. There had also been an annoying "clunking" sound which other mechanics could never hear because it only happened for about the first 15 minutes of driving, and even that was not consistent, and I always had to drive kids to such and therefore by the time I got to the mechanic the noise had stopped. I also was about to drive to LA in the pouring rain and had kept meaning to get new tires...but, well, yeah.
They told me that it would be cheaper to get tires elswhere, and they were right, but that time/money thing meant that I called them after I had said "Yeah, okay, I'll go to Costco" and changed my mind. It was more expensive, but the car has new tires, and the ones that I wanted.
The "check engine" light has not come on again.
When I picked up the car they told me that they weren't sure that the clunking noise was gone, and if it hadn't I should bring it back after my trip, and they would continue to scratch their head over it, and try other things. I was assured that it was not harming the car or endangering anyone in it. (Which I believed because it has been making that noise for like 2 or 3 years). The noise was still there, so I brought the car back in, and $116 later the clunking noise is gone and I am driving a car that feels good as new. Yay.
I mentioned Angies list and was told that it was 10% off (parts? labor? I can't remember and I'm not looking at the bill, and, did I mention, I as happy with the work), as it happens I spent enough money that the special listed and 10% were about the same, but the way I look at it, he should know and honor the actual special. Not a deal breaker for me, but just a note. When I came on to write this review and saw what it really was ($49.95 for the 110 pt, usually $200, check) I had a moment of distrust, which I am simply writing off to he's a small business owner and hates giving money away when he doesn't have to to people like me who don't pay enough attention, so, do I need to be a pushier consumer? Dunno, just wish he's gotten it right, because if he had, I would have had zero negative things to say about my experience.
