DON'S KEY & LOCK

Took forever to get them to get a quote after a quick response to the free estimate. Took calling for several weeks to get it done. But when they did it, done in the time specified. I think they are more busy then inattentive.

They were professional, punctual, and cleaned up after themselves.

I used Don's in the past for a simple key replacement and called to have them come to quote a similar job. The receptionist was anything but friendly. At one point I felt I was putting her out asking to setup an appointment. The technician was friendly, punctual and explained that he understands my comment about my experience on the phone. Regardless, he took some brief notes and that's the last I heard. I seem to have fallen between the cracks and a $500+ job doesn't seem important to follow-up.

He came out on short notice on a weekend and it was a reasonable price. I had a positive experience with this company; I learned a little about locksmithing. They worked just fine for me.

They were real good. I thought that the lock was damaged but it turned out that it just needed to be oiled. They were honest about what the problem was. They did not try to get more out of the job. I spent about $75. I think that was the going rate for locks. I think it was a bit high. I will use them again in the future.

The experience was fine and I thought the price was reasonable. Everything worked well and they did a good job.

We were going away on a vacation and needed the job to be done. They came promptly and did it on the same visit. There was an existing lock. We were not sure if they could adapt it or not. They were able to do it. The whole thing was pretty quick which is why we thought the price was too much. We paid more than what we wanted to pay. We spent about $150. We will use them in the future.

I scheduled with Don's Lock and Key to come at 11am on Friday. We called early Friday morning to check and see if they could come a little later and the lady said the guy would likely not get there until after 11, maybe 12 so we didn't have to worry if we were going to be home a few minutes after 11. When they didn't call or show by 1:15 we called back and they said they wouldn't have someone available until 5 or 6. WERE THEY PLANNING TO INFORM ME OF THIS??? NO!!!! They explained that the 11am appointment was a "WINDOW" of time and then noted that the cable company also gives you a window and sometimes doesn't show at all. They are comparing their customer service to the cable company. They also told me they have been doing business this way since 1986. I cancelled the appointment and would never call them again. I instead used THEO from Open and Shut locksmith (415) 504-5397 who showed up 2 minutes after the appointed time and finished rekeying 5 locks in less than an hour. That is customer service.

The locksmith was prompt, quick in completing his work, helpful in suggesting solutions to an access problem, and courteous. The price was excellent compared to others in the area.

It went great!

They came out the day I put in my request. Showed up 20 minutes after two hour window they gave me, but in general the guy did a good job and kept at it until he had a solution that worked for us. Am happy with the result.

The good news: The locksmith was friendly, knowledgeable, and very competent. Our inside doors had been recently painted (which is what had led to our decision to replace the crummy door knobs) and he was very careful in placing the heavy metal jig (to guide his drilling) so as not to mar the paint. He also brought a whisk broom and pan and cleaned up carefully after the drilling. Equally impressive, after installing everything, he showed me three doors that did not close well and explained exactly what needed to be done in the way of scraping off old paint in order for them to close tightly. I would hire him again in a flash. Now the bad news: This company gets a C in punctuality and responsiveness because, while the locksmith was very responsive once he arrived (and he arrived on time the days he gave the estimate and did the work) the communication from the scheduling staff was very poor (not punctual and not responsive). The first time someone was scheduled to come give an estimate, he was due at 9:30. When no one had showed by 10, I called and learned that the person they had planned to send was sick, so we would need to reschedule. The fact that someone was sick was not what I found frustrating; it was that I had to call to find this out - a half hour after someone should have been there. We rescheduled for early the following week, again for 9:30. That morning, I called at 9:15 just to make sure everyone was well and on track. It's a good thing I did, because the receptionist told me the locksmith would be late, that there had been a "lock out." Yet when I asked how late, she said she had no idea. I asked her to please check with the locksmith and give me a time estimate. Would he be half an hour late or two hours late? By 10, I had not heard back from her and called again. She told me that she'd forgotten to call me (no apologies) but that she had found out that the locksmith would be unable to get to our house until about 11 or 11:30. Because I had a meeting at work, I couldn't wait and needed to reschedule once again. I almost gave up at this point, but because this locksmith had been rated so highly on Angie's List, I decided to give it one more try. This time the locksmith arrived on schedule and gave me an estimate that seemed reasonable compared to two estimates I had received (one for around $600 and another for around $700). I liked him and got the sense that he would do a good job so scheduled the work for soon thereafter. I should say that my annoyance about needing to reschedule twice was less about the need to reschedule (these things happen in life) and almost entirely about the poor communication on the part of the office staff.

When I called to book an appointment, I was really disappointed to be told that they couldn't respond that day. In fact, they couldn't respond for three days. As I needed to have the lock repaired today, I asked if they could recommend another locksmith to help me out. The answer was an unequivocal no. Haven't they seen "Miracle on 34th Street"?

Easy to schedule, not much notice required. Showed up on time. Performed the work. Didn't charge extra for the missing key. Great, friendly guy.

They came to my house within 15 minutes of calling them and had the job done in 10 minutes. It works great now. They were professional, knowledgeable, very responsive and no hassle. I'll definitely use them again.

I called at 9:30 am & they sent someone over by 10 am. I explained what work I needed done. He worked for about 20 minutes & then called me back when he was finished. He did exactly what I asked for & charged me $90. It was a great experience. I will definitely call them again.

Outstanding. Initially they could not do the job right away but when they heard the circumstances, they came right out. The locksmith was a pro. He knew exactly how to do the job the quickest way. It was a great way to finish a bad situation.

Great. Called to notify they were going to be a bit late (ok, with me). Arrived, quickly got to work and gave me a fair estimate. I now have a new key for my door and a better understanding of the quirky older hardware from my 1920's home.
