John spent two hours trying to install the thermostat. He also looked around for the panel box so that he could start to install a video doorbell, but unfortunately, he spent so long on the thermostat that he wasn't able to compete the jobs I had hired him for before he left to go to another client's house. I had scheduled him to arrive at 11, but then his system changed the arrival time to 11:30. However, he didn't arrive until 11:45 and then he charged me $100 just to arrive and find parking and bring materials when I live in a residential neighborhood and there is parking directly in front of my house. Additionally, he did not bring the materials he needed to clean up after the job, and I had to get out my vacuum and dust broom to clean up all the dust and plaster bits and wires he had left on the floor. All told, he tried to charge me $453 just to install a Nest thermostat, a price that I found to be egregious and I contested with him. I reminded him that he had quoted me 1 hour to install the Nest and the doorbell, and that he didn't finish the job or conduct his work in a timely fashion. After I called him to respectfully talk things through he became verbally aggressive and hung up on me, later texting me inappropriately. He later acknowledged that he had charged more than he should have and discounted some money off of his bill. I am now paying $293 for his time, and I am very disappointed with this first experience with Angie's List.

He was exactly as all the reviews suggest. Kind, fair, efficient. I kind of wish he was able to do the work himself!
When he realized he couldn't do it, he didn't ask for any payment either. He'll definitely be my first call for future electrical needs.
UPDATE:
I was very appreciative of his time, and kindness. That said, unfortunately I have to say he completely misdiagnosed our electrical issues, suggesting it was likely a cut cord behind the wall that would require re-wiring and putting us in touch with another electrician who would have charged us $130 just to come out and begin troubleshooting. We opted to have another electrician come and in five minutes the problem was diagnosed and in ten minutes it was fixed. It was not a cut wire behind the wall. It was simply some corrosion over the connections for the halogen bulb. Again, I'd probably recommend John if people asked, but given this one and only experience, it seems he overthought the problem.

A delightful in person experience. The timeliness, friendliness, and expert action was greatly appreciated. Very comforting and enjoyable, in service to an annoying electrical problem/question. The experience was only slightly tarnished as was a flat fee for problem solving and solution (parts not included - I missed the fine print) and for the work ultimately performed, it was a little high. A future work credit was extended, which made it a better value, but as a renter I don't bank on services as if I were a homeowner.

The D and F reviews listed below here on Angie's are similar to what I experienced today.
I CANNOT recommend Brookline to anyone. The way he operates is unprofessional and borderline scamming. I don't want any of my neighbors to have the strange and expensive experience I've just had.
The rates are absurd...especially as this was a very straightforward handyman type job. Not a single breaker needed to be turned off. and I had prepped the work areas all ahead and had the fixtures ready to go. also had a ladder on hand and so forth.
I should have paid more attention when he was not very transparent in disclosing his rates in advance. He also oddly spent a lot of time talking about saving the customer money and wanting to be efficient . a red flag -- I guess, these days?! Turns out he works in quite the opposite manner from what he presents. This guy is very intent on running the bill up.
One hour was spent to install two new fixtures, including removing the existing. I should have stopped him there. He seemed interested in further work and I like giving business to locals. I had a switch that needed replacing and had the new one on hand so he then spent another 15-20" replacing the dual pole switch. very straightforward. I was charged $365 !! for 1.5 hrs work. (This makes his hourly rate higher than what I pay my medical doctor with umpteen years graduate education. wow. He of course summed it up as 1.75 hrs work which is still an extremely high hourly rate for this type of work.
Of note, he wanted to charge for the phone call time he spent in setting the appointment, discussing the differences between LED and CFL, and for time he used in going to the store. I always pay workers for the time they use to pick up parts and materials for me. But in this case, I never asked or hired him to do any shopping and it was of absolutely zero use in this situation. As I said, I had everything on hand and made that perfectly clear to him before hiring. But more importantly, this is very questionable behavior...and also demonstrates the difficulty in holding normal communications with this gentleman.
It should be mentioned that he likes to ask a lot of questions (not always irrelevant), hardly lets the customer answer or does not at all listen to the response, and then goes on to expound on mostly undesired solutions or worse, ask the same question again. To make it really annoying, he then tries to charge you for all this wasteful discussion. He also did that thing of back and forth to the car to get things that are not really needed for the job. This is a mature senior age gentleman that does have electrical expertise and handyman fix-it type knowledge thus it's hard to understand why one would be playing such games at this point in a career. Who has time for that?
It's mentioned below and it happened to me as well: in what I believe was a continued try at upping the bill, and with what seemed to be a keen interest in checking out every corner of my home, he started talking fire and co2 alarms, all of which are up to date....and that's when I finally got a clue and realized I had made a major error in hiring this gentleman. Too bad. I was initially excited to have found someone nearby, with flexibility in their schedule, and had a two page punch list to work on over the next several weeks.
The final straw was at receiving and discussing the invoice. I paid $350 in the end.

Mr. Peters showed up same-day (a Saturday) to fix a faulty dimmer switch in our tenant's apartment. He provided me a detailed explanation of the issue and the repair and offered his advice on several other small issues around the house, including a potentially dangerous short in a desk lamp as well. He ensured that our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in both units were up to code. I definitely appreciated his availability, promptness, and professionalism.
