The next evening, I received an estimate, but it was not complete. I had wanted an upgraded outside frame that was not included in the pricing, so James had to re-figure the cost and email me a price for the additional feature. I then took the estimate to my local Dixieline to get a line on what the retail value of just the windows would be. According to this estimate, James' value-added installation services would cost about $1500 extra. I considered this to be fair enough, so I decided to proceed.
It took me a few more days to decide to go with the tan colored version of the windows. They are the same price as the white, but they don't scream RETROFIT WINDOWS like the white versions do. To determine this, I drove around town looking at a MILLION retrofits!<br>
Because James hadn't taken accurate-enough-to-order-windows measurements the first time around, we had to schedule a second meeting. James was late for the second meeting and I had to leave before he got there. He went around and took a batch of measurements on the outside of the house, anyway, but those weren't particularly useful as being accurate enough, and the resulting estimate included features I didn't want...like a frame color that was available at extra cost, and dividers on all of the windows rather than just two selected windows, and it didn't include features that I had decided that I wanted, like some double-hung rather than sliders, and a special kind of obscure glass for the bathroom windows.
James wanted to dial this all in over the phone, but I held out for another visit...our third...so I could make sure that everything would be right on delivery day. On this third visit, we ironed out all the problems, additions, and subtractions, and a day or so later I received another estimate. This one still had a few window dividers where they shouldn't be, but it was close enough. (I attributed this to the fact that James didn't really know how to use the estimating software provided by Milgard. The person at Dixieline gave me a flawless estimate, drawn from my crude little pictographs of each window, even noting on the software the location of each window.) A good estimate was helpful because I wanted to double- and triple-check to make sure everything was right so we could eliminate problems before the windows were delivered. Noting the location of each window helped immensely in determining whether individual window openings had been measured correctly.
Installation day finally arrived. James gave me a two-hour window for delivery. I thought that the factory was making the delivery, but James had them on his truck...and he was about an hour late. (I figure he saved a few bucks by making the delivery himself.) He also saved a few bucks on paying his help, because I helped him offload most of the windows before his helpers showed up.
They sorted out the windows and got to work removing the old ones on my house. James uses some old-school method of taping the fixed portion of the windows and rather violently breaking them. As you can imagine, this makes a mess. A helper who was obviously working with him for the first time, had discovered that a $2.00 glass cutter would work more quietly and with considerably less mess. He was unsuccessful in converting James to this procedure...which is why I was picking shards of glass out of the flower beds for a few days after they were done.
James also used a reciprocating saw to remove the hinged casement windows, when a simple hammer and chisel would have sufficed to remove the rivets holding the hinges. His saw damaged the stucco and the new paint job on the house, so I had to spend some time repairing stucco and touching up the paint that I had applied in advance of the new window installation. Painting first was designed to eliminate the hassle of carefully painting around all the pristine, new windows. I had anticipated a little touch-up of the paint around the windows, but repairing the stucco was a surprise.
During the installation process, a second helper tossed plastic wrap, spent cans of aerosol insulation, empty tubes of glue, and lots of paper towels used to clean up during the gluing and insulation processes into my blue city recycling bin. When I noticed and objected to him placing items in the bin that aren't allowed, he mumbled some excuse and wandered off. It was left to me to separate the trash from the recyclables.
If you use this company to install your windows, it would be useful to have the following items on hand because they are not provided: At least two rolls of paper towels for cleaning up overflows of glue, canned insulation, and caulk. You might need some scrap lumber to fill a framing void, if necessary. You might also have a broom and a dust pan handy to loan the crew to help in cleaning up the dust, shards of glass, and aluminum parts that are an inevitable part of the process. You might think that they'd have some or all of these items on hand, but you would be wrong.
After they were done, I checked to make sure that each sash opened and closed properly. All but one were fine, but that one would open only a few inches. James yanked on it a few times, and summarily declared that it was a warranty issue. He also pointed out a tiny tear in a screen...which he also declared a warranty issue. He also mentioned that they had made a bit of a mess in the interior with the foaming insulation, saying that it was part of the process and that they couldn't really be blamed. I showed him where his helper had made a mess with the caulk around the outside of each of the windows, and he kind of shrugged it off. I paid him...and he was gone in a flash.
If you stand far enough away from the windows, they look fine. But I was left with repainting window sills that had smeary remains of foam insulation, outside stucco repairs and repainting, and smeary caulk outside that will soon look bad because even dried caulk is a major dust magnet. I was also left with two "warranty" issues that were likely installation issues.
A closer inspection of the interior also revealed that James had left all of the screws holding the windows to the wood framing sticking out. I sent him an email requesting the little plugs that should be used to cover the holes that the screws leave...and he told me that he always does it that way and that Milgard would get me those plugs. I called Milgard and they agreed to come out to repair the screen and to see what was up with the sash. The person on the phone said that the traveling rep would have the screw plugs "on the truck."
A month later, the warranty guy showed up. During the morning before he arrived, I re-examined the non-working sash and jiggled it around some more...and got it open! As it turned out, James had left a piece of the plastic used to frame out the raw interior of the window in the lower track, and that was hanging it up. The warranty rep replaced the screen, opining that the tear was probably an installation issue (I was in agreement), but he gave me the new screen, anyway. I needed about 50 plugs to hide all of the exposed screws, and he had only FOUR with him. He promised to send the rest in the mail, and over a week later, I am still waiting.
"Not only Vinyl View but also a Milgard representative came out to the job site and addressed all issues that the customer had and we corrected all of those. Since the home was older there were issues that came up that the customer may not have expected."
From the time Mr. James Knapp came to my home to discuss type and brand of window, pricing and installation he was professional, pleasant and self assured. He was not in the least bit pushy or impatient with my decision making process. He was a pleasure to work. I had received quotes from several other companies and individuals. It was stressful working with others.
He ordered the windows and the were installed within the timeframe he had stated. During installation he was responsive and again patient with my questions. He worked alone and I was pleased with this process. I felt as the owner of the company and this being his livelihood he was invested in every single aspect of the window installation for my home. He was proud of his work as he should be.
I did verify his Contractor License, yelp review and Angie's List prior jobs.
All in all I thought price and work were good and would use them for my next purchase of windows.
We needed new windows for our 25+ year old house.
The owner Jim came out as scheduled and gave us an estimate, his was our 3rd and most competitive.
When we decided to do the work with Vinyl View, he came out again and did the
measurements and we scheduled the work over a two-day period. The work
was completed by Justin in the two days and all windows look great. I would
definitely consider Vinyl View again for any future window work.
Our new Simonton DaylightMax windows look and work great, and
Vinyl View made the whole process painless for us.
We are very pleased with Vinyl View and our new Simonton windows, and highly recommend them both.
We received the detailed estimate on 10 May, I emailed back some questions later in the evening and first thing on 11 May, before 8 AM he had a response sitting in our email for our review. Vinyl View Company Inc responsiveness was fabulous. We got all our estimates together, weighed the pros and cons and James was the least expensive...without a special deal! ...and we felt most comfortable with James and his Vinyl View Company Inc and made the decision to hire him. He relayed he liked to do business the way it has always been done, via a handshake and we agreed, I trusted him to place the order, and he trusted me to mail a check for 50% of the cost of purchase and installation of the windows. He said he would contact me in a few days once he received the information of when the windows were slated to be completed from being made and we would collectively coordinate a convenient time for me to have the windows installed. In totality thus far, from the time I made contact which was late 6 May/early 7 May, by the 4th day, we had both a preliminary estimate and a detailed accurate in home estimate conducted, answered all of our questions and ultimately happily chose James from Vinyl View Company Inc to purchase and install our new windows and the down payment was made and the ball was rolling. Of course, when getting windows made from any company, you have to wait until the windows are custom made to fit your specific project, we understand that but the initial stage of getting the process moving forward was painless and uncomplicated when dealing with James and Vinyl View Company. As a result upon completion of the windows, James will ultimately purchase and install several sliding glass doors in our home as well without competition or receipt of alternate estimates.
James brought the windows to our Home on Friday 31 May 2013 for the installation the next morning on Saturday 1 June 2013, as well as some trim and a few other supplies, which we put in the garage. On Saturday Morning on 1 June 2013, Justin from Vinyl View came on time and began the install of our new windows. In under 2 hours, the old windows were out adn all the new windows were in. You could tell Justin knew what he was doing, made short work of the window install and moved to trim the inside of the windows, which made the windows look great. The inside trim was white vinyl, matched the windows, was cut perfectly adn was caulked perfectly and the caulking was smooth adn the windows just blended in and looked awesome. Justin then moved outside, and caulked the windows and trimmed them outside as well. Again, a perfect job, inside and outside!! Justin replaced the blind hangers for us as well. That made it super easy to return the window coverings back to normal with a mix of blinds and curtains, they went right back up without issue.
The old windows were removed, the house was cleaned like he wasn't even there and the new windows were all installed. Prior to departure, Justin explained all the features of the windows, operation, warranty, everything! Prior to Justin departing, my old windows were gone, my new windows were installed perfectly, the house was clean, everything was explained...and I was extremely pleased and satisfied. Everyone always checks everything with a fine tooth comb after the installers depart, and the windows were installed perfectly.
I'd highly recommend Vinyl View, found them through Angie's List, great value, did business with a genuinely nice man and a great business, the install was flawless, it was a great value, and exceeded my expectations. They will be coming back to do my sliding doors in the near future. Great experience from start to finish......highly pleased!!!
I sent pictures of the new door to my friends :)
Thanks a lot Angie's List for your great referrals.
We gave him 50% at the signing of the contract and 50% at the completition of the job, which was completed in 2 days of work.
no hidden fees or hidden costs, everything was as expected, he did a really good job!
thanks!
Mr. Knapp's quote was just a few dollars higher than one of the other companies - but his responsiveness and description of the work to be performed made such good sense, that I preferred retaining his services from the beginning. I was not disappointed and happily refer him without hesitation.
