"Thank you for taking the time to provide a review of our services. It is greatly appreciated and we are very happy that we were able to assist you."
Unfortunately, she had to move to another state and could no longer assist. However, the company would have assigned someone else with those same qualities. This did not come to pass as I had to take a break on continuing but I will be contacting them again as soon as I can move forward.
"[Member Name Removed], thank you so much for the very kind words written aobut Tina and the services she provided you. We are pleased beyond words that you were so happy. Tina had a family death and left for a while but has now returned to our firm. We look forward to hearing from you again if you need assistance. Thank you again for taking your valuable time to write a review."
She offered a great idea about where to place a vertical stripe of glass tile in the corner of the shower instead of the conventional placement inline with the shower controls. Also suggested placement of the master shower and tub which offered great visual effect and very spacious feel. She looked at certain features in the kitchen and pointed out areas that were outdated which we modified at relatively low cost. We really appreciated those "little things" that make a substantial difference.
Sometime after the first 3 interactions, email communications seemed to break down and she seemed unresponsive. Later, it turned out that my emails were getting into her spam box. By then, we decided to mutually end the engagement after using up 5 of the 10 hours.
She definitely contributed to improving my home. Communication could have been a bit smoother, but things like that happen. We would consider hiring them again if we have a need.
"Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review of your design services with Style On a Shoestring! We appreciate your words. We also apologize that you had the inconvenience of delayed response due to the e-mail situation and are grateful that you are so understanding of the circumstance. It would be a pleasure to assist you again in the future. Enjoy your home for many years to come!"
Tina and her design team provided an initial consultation at my home where she took pictures and we discussed design options with consideration of blending new and existing pieces. She arranged for contractors to meet on one day to see the job and provide the basis for their estimates. Tina did provided about 39 hours of design time over a few months as well as a schedule for the contractors which worked with my schedule. Tina did quite a bit of advance work and shopping and provided websites for me to look at pieces. Tina and her team also arranged for a handyman to assist on installation "day". Tina was easy to work with and honored my extended time line.
The contractors were very dependable and professional. All of them provided liability and work comp policy information and lien releases as my husband requested. The drywall, stone, moulding, electrical, window coverings, and flooring contractors were outstanding and I would recommend them highly. (Raeco Interiors, Hegle Tile, TF Larkin Inc, Michael Anderson, Levas Draperies, Cruse,Co., Clean Image Flooring) The painting contractor, probably not. (West Coast Painting).
"Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience with our firm! We know how valuable time is and want to express how greatly we appreciate it. We LOVE to read that you felt your project was sucessful and hope you enjoy your home for many years to come. Thank you again for your time and your business with Style On a Shoestring!"
After severarl consultaions with the designer, we had chosen carpets, rugs, light fixtures, paint colors, fixtures for the bathrooms etc. Initially the process went well as the designer brought us pictues of light fixtures, fitments etc that we selected our choices from.
At this point we realized (were informed) that we were competing with a doctor's office that had to be completely remodelled within a long weekend, so the timing for our remodel was on the back burner until such time the doctor's office was completed. This is the time we definitely realized were second in the line of response with regards to installlment, contractors etc. This was apparent several times during the entire procss.
Th designer failed in the areas or recording measurements, orders and specifics for a new fireplace. For all of these (meaurements of rugs, curtains, undermats, the fire mantel) we had to go thorugh a second round of order and returns. For the lighting fixtures, tehy were supposed to be ordered and delivered to the home owner, but never ordered at the time we discussed they should have been delivered. On several occassions the designer would call me for a reminder of the measurements, choices etc as she knew I was a diligent note taker. On some occasions I was informed that fixtures were supposed to be delivered to my home, but on further investigation they were never ordered on time so then they were on "back order"
The biggest disappointments in the whole remodel with SOAS was the fact that as a smaller client we felt that the attention warrented wasn't given. The final straw was when we were out of the US (abroad)and had been assured on multiple occasions that we didn't need to empty the kitchen cabinets for resurfacing of the cabinet doors, unfortunatley that this was in fact not the case. While we were 6000 miles away for a family celebration we received a telephone call from SOAS asking if my visiting family members staying in our home (for 2 weeks) from Ireland could empty all the kitchen cabinets (approximately 44 cabinets and drawers in the kitchen). I found this request completey insulting to my family and for the fact the remodel started in June and this was August and we had never been informed of this possibility. Had we been informed appropriately, we would have packed the entire kitchen prior to our departure. To add insult, our house sitter stayed for 2 weeks in a completely nonfunctional kitchen and when we returned, I had to take two vacation days off work to put all the kitchen back together. Overall, while the ease of choosing carpets, light fixtures, curtains etc is facilated by SOAS, I wouldn't recommend them based on my personal experience as being a "smaller client" the attention to detail wasn't provided and we had multiple duplicate returns (due to measurments taken of rugs and curtains), a mis-sized fire mantel so we had to order two, and a fireplace design that was ordered without our imput. With the biggest insult of the entire process having visiting family having to eat out for two weeks at their expense because we were informed only the cabinet faces would be removed and the kitchen would be functional.

After approving the proposal my wife and I met with Tracy a couple of times to choose materials for the remodel project, including granite countertops, tile, and flooring. Tracy also visited the house a couple of times with sample materials. At no time we're we obligated to utilize contractors or vendors referred by Style on a Shoestring and Tracy did not push the matter with us. We chose to purchase appliances and some plumbing fixtures through major retail chains instead of vendors recommended by Style on a Shoestring. Nevertheless, the costs quoted by contractors and vendors referred by Style on a Shoestring were comparable to those we could have obtained by dealing with the contractors directly on our own.
Prior to the beginning of work Tracy developed a detailed, day-by-day timeline of which work would be performed by which contractor, on which day. Tracy then managed each contractor's performance against the timeline. She also visited the house about once a week to check the quality of work and make any necessary adjustments or provide additional directions to the contractor. She also was available on-call pretty much anytime, seven days a week, for detailed questions and to coordinate work among the multiple contractors. Coordination was necessary on several occasions (e.g. coordinating flooring installation by one contractor with baseboard installation by another). Tracy always responded quickly, and successfully coordinated all matters among multiple contractors. Tracy has a good working relationship with the contractors to whom she refers work and her service was very valuable to me as the customer and homeowner. I would have been unable to manage this project on my own, either at all or anywhere nearly as well as Style on a Shoestring. The design and project management fees were well worth the cost.
Style on a Shoestring clearly met and in some instances exceeded my expectations for project design and management. One instance of exceeding my expectations was my request to Style on a Shoestring to identify a roofing contractor to repair two leaks in my roof. Roofing certainly is beyond the scope of interior design and remodeling, however Tracy did an excellent job of identifying two roofers to inspect the damage and bid on the job. She identified the roofers in a timely manner, obtained written proposals from them, and coordinated for the winning contractor to perform the repairs. I was uncertain whether Style on a Shoestring could identify a good roofing contractor considering that roofing is outside of Style on a Shoestring's typical market of services. However Tracy came-through well and proved that she and her company can perform strongly. The second instance of Style on a Shoestring exceeding my expectations occurred when we had a problem with one of the contractors to whom Style on a Shoestring referred me for a glass shower enclosure. This company employed a sales representative who had poor knowledge of the applicability and nuances of installation of glass shower enclosure products. He sold me an enclosure that was not well-suited for installation in my existing shower stall, and compounded the mistake by making incorrect measurements for the dimensions of the enclosure. The result was an enclosure that did not fit my shower stall, leaked water, and required that extra wood reinforcement be installed in the wall to support the shower door. This situation devolved into a bad episode in my home remodeling project, however through all of this turmoil Tracy's clout with the vendor was clear. She held several telephone conversations and exchanged several e-mails with the owner of the company and met them once at my house, resulting in complete "customer satisfaction". The vendor paid for several hundred dollars of bathtub alterations and refinishing necessary to repair damage from mis-measurement of the enclosure and to reinforce the wall to support the door. In the end I received the shower enclosure I wanted and did not incur any additional cost as a result. Style on a Shoestring performed admirably in this situation.
Generally, I'd be inclined to refer Style on a Shoestring to anyone contemplating a large, multi-faceted home remodeling project such as mine. Style on a Shoestring also could perform well on smaller projects, and no job is too small for them. I'll likely contact Style on a Shoestring again in the foreseeable future to complete additional home renovations that we deferred this year.
