We were referred to Top Line Roofing by our realtor some time ago for a different job, but never used the company. When we discovered a water stain in the ceiling in one of our rooms, however, we figured it was time to pull the trigger. I contacted Top Line and spoke to the owner, Wayne Sorenson. He was very professional and polite. He was able to come out to our house within a couple of days, (not a problem as there was no forecasted rain), and assess the issue quickly. When we received the estimate, it at first seemed high, but was eventually treated as a reasonable cost for this type of job after we did a sanity check with other friends and family who had similar roofing jobs completed. We scheduled the work with Top Line's office manager within a couple of days, and a crew showed up in a week (timing of the work was upon our request). The actual execution of the work was good, but hit some snags upon the way. I climbed up to the roof with the foreman to gauge the condition of the roof before the job, and did notice the problems Wayne mentioned in his writeup, but, admittedly, the foreman could not articulate exactly what his team would accomplish with the faulty chimney flashing and broken tiles (replacement and cementing, respectively). There were obviously some language issues. From what I could discern, he did mention that there was another type of flashing "better" than the one they were going to install, and I told him to repair the tiles, and hold off on the flashing before I had a chance to speak with Wayne about this. I called the office but could not reach Wayne to learn more. Notwithstanding, near the end of the day, the foreman arrived at my door and told me the job was complete, a little surprising given my instructions to hold off until Wayne called me back. To this day, however, we've had a few rains here in San Diego, and I have yet to see additional leaks or exacerbation of the previous leak mentioned before. They must have done a good job nonetheless. The only other issue we had was the task cleanup. Debris fell off the roof during the job and it looks like was merely swept from the concrete path into our lawn by the crew at the end of the day, as our dog actually grabbed some of it in his teeth and started chewing on it. Not humorous at all. Some more debris ran off the roof during a rainstorm shortly after the job, which we cleaned up as quickly as we could with a dustpan and broom. We would have liked to have had more care with the cleanup as we did with accuracy of the work itself. It's a shame this sort of behavior, i.e. do the job then leave the cleanliness/reordering to the homeowner, seems endemic for contractors, so we've recently taken the tack to withhold payment until the post-job cleaning is complete. Overall, I would recommend Top Line Roofing to get a roofing job performed. Wayne, the owner, was, and is, the best part of working with the company. Their warranty is good, and their repair work solid. For the next person that hires them, I would simply make it abundantly clear what you expect out of the work crew's behavior and performance, e.g. maintain a clean workspace, and set an example of what is considered proper effort for the money you'll pay for a roofing job.
