Most people say their remodel experience is a total nightmare, but ours was a dream. Henry Bertram, owner and operator of San Diego Craftsman Construction, Inc., was an absolute delight to work with. He listened carefully to all of our ideas, made suggestions, and spent a considerable amount of time clarifying what we were picturing for our remodel. The subcontractors that he brought in for each part of the project were all extremely professional, arriving on time, courteous, and outstanding in their workmanship. Their esteem for Henry was quite obvious and they were amazing with all of the comings and goings in their good humor and respect for each other's trades and craftsmanship. I was really impressed by the teamwork I observed. Henry was an integral, continual part of the entire process. In addition to meeting in person, he communicated by email, texting and phone calls and his responses were extremely rapid, respectful and informative. Our entire project took from 2009 to 2011, starting with the master suite and decking, which was finished in 3 months. We then took a long break before starting our second phase which included all of the remaining work and lasted approximately another 3 months. We kept adding ideas as we went along and Henry was completely flexible and open to working with our changes. I have to add that I came home one day to find that Henry had had his men rewire, drywall, paint and repair our incredibly ugly laundry room (a room that we weren't going to bother with because it was too overwhelmingly ugly) all at his own expense because he said he just couldn't bear to leave us with such an eyesore. Amazing! I can't recommend San Diego Craftsman Construction enough. We had a wonderful experience, love our new home and will definitely call on Henry again, although we have little left to alter now!!

He's not the most expensive, but not the cheapest person to hire. He actually did all of the work himself. The quality of his work is excellent which is why you are willing to pay that extra fee for the job. It was a huge job and it ended up looking great.

It was a big job and it took about 6 months. The workers worked around us. While the experience wasn't fun, the contractor did a great job minimizing the impact on us. He did a good job preparing us what we were in for, and letting us know at each step of the way what would happen next and how long it would last. His estimate was right on the money, and he helped us save money in various places. He never, not once, failed to return a phone call, usually within a few minutes. When delays happened or a worker had to be rescheduled, the contractor let us know right away (usually well in advance) so we didn't wait around. The biggest problem in the process was when the door and window installer messed up the order (an error made by a new employee, the subcontractor's relative). The contractor went to bat for us despite his longstanding connection with this subcontractor, and the subcontractor eventually made things right despite losing money on the project.

From layperson's view apparently complete kitchen upgrade, master bath and guest bath upgrades, as well as new flooring in those rooms, as well as foyer and family room don't constitute whole house renovations.

I can truthfully say I've never had such a pleasant experience with contractors as with Henry and his crew. I found them to be professional, knowledgeable, punctual and all things good. Not only did they clean up after each days work, the job was actually finished a few days ahead of schedule. They were amazing!

Followed his customary practice of careful inspection, planning, and execution. Helped us consider options. Tried to minimize costs by only removing as much flooring as possible (ended up being entire room). Flooring subcontractor did excellent job from removal through coating floor and reinstalling baseboards. Contractor documented job thoroughly. We know these are his usual standards since he has done many jobs for us both himself and with subcontractors over the past 17 years.

Great contractor, very dependable, and does excellent work.
