The faucet replacement went very smoothly. We called Dan early on Sunday morning (we used the alternate number posted on their Angie's List page) and Dan picked up immediately); he came later the same day and quickly and expertly did a great job. It cost $130. We have come to rely on Larry Hudson plumbing for all our plumbing needs. They cleared our sewer line of roots several times and, on Dan's advice, we eventually decided to have him replace the root-damaged sewer line. This was done many years ago, and we have had no issues with our sewer since then. They have done several other smaller jobs (e.g. replacing our waste disposal and installing a new faucet in the kitchen sink.). Every job was expertly done at the time arranged. Dan is now the only plumber in this firm - sadly Larry Hudson himself passed away a few years ago. The work Dan does on his own is of the same high quality as the work done when he worked with Larry. It is unfortunate that Angie's List does not properly promote Larry Hudson any more due to a dispute that has nothing to do with the quality of Dan's work. I strongly recommend any Angie's List member who manages to discover the existence of Larry Hudson plumbing to ignore the dispute with Angie's List and hire Dan to deal with their plumbing issues.

On the second day,  I pointed out to him that one of the two toilets was still leaking - more than it had been before the repair. This was on a Tuesday. He told me he didn't have time to look and he didn't think he had the right part in his truck. He said he would have to come back again to repair that toilet. He left and never came back and we never heard from this outfit again. Very disappointing.

They arrived on time. There were two of them, and they politely explained that a senior plumber was there with a trainee, which was no problem. They had the issue figured out in minutes & were on their way after explaining they needed to order a few parts. They came back 2 days later & replaced the old pipes & everything has worked perfectly since.

Dan arrived at the time promised. The water heater connections required modifications, but he had all the necessary parts in his vehicle. He answered all our questions and invited us to watch his work. He even took our old heater away, which we did not expect.

I called on Dec. 30 and was told the plumber would be available the next day between 9 and 11 a.m. I was in the middle of a remodel and because I had the pipes from an adjoining sink that shared the same drain system as the bathtub exposed,  I wanted to take advantage of the easy access to possibly run a snake to clear it. The builders were going to be ready to install the new vanity that afternoon, so the timing was fine. At 11 a.m. when he still had not shown up or called, I called the office to inquire about where he was. I got a return call in about a half hour and was told he was running late and he'd be here soon. "Soon" turned out to be after 3 p.m., too late for the builders to install the new vanity. He explained that the previous job had turned into a major mess involving mold etc. While I understand that jobs do not always go as planned, an earlier notification would have been appreciated. The actual work that was done was fine. I should add that timeliness is of great importance to me, though I can accept tardiness if notified ahead of time. My time is valuable too.
Response from Larry A Hudson Plumbing
"Hello, While I understand the grade on punctuality, I don't understand the grade for quality. Doesn't your tub drain well or is it still draining too slow. You don't explain what the vanity has to do with the bath tub. They contractors could have installed that vanity at any time. I stayed to answer any other questions you had about your icemaker line, the roots coming up next to the toilet and your other water and sewer issues. Furthermore the equipment we use to clear drains is a thicker and more invasive snake than most other plumbers use. That is why we are willing to put a warranty when we do drain cleaning. Our truck is bigger than most, because we carry more tools and supplies than most. I guarantee you can always find someone cheaper, but Larry has been in the business since 1947, (yes he is that old) but I doubt you will find anyone trained better than his crew of people. If you ever want to meet Larry personally, he loves going out to meet his clients. Best wishes from Larry Hudson Plumbing"

He came within 1/2 hour of our call (we called about 2:30 p.m.) and worked until 8:00 p.m. non-stop until all the problems were corrected.

He showed us all details and explained every step of the process. His cheerfulness was unending!!!! I would definitely use this plumber again!!!!!

I was afraid that I might need a new hot water heater since I had very low water pressure in the hot water throughout the house.  Dan found what the cause was, and fixed it with a very simple repair.  It was much less expensive than getting a new hot water heater!  He answered all my questions and did a very good job.  He even fixed another small problem I had with the water faucet in the kitchen and didn't charge me for his time there.  I was very pleased with the service.

I have lived in my current home in Carlsbad for 33 years, during which there have been many occasions requiring services of a plumber.  I am pleased to report that Dan is the BEST plumber/service man that has worked for me at my home.  He arrived on time, with the required water heater and all required tools.  He proceeded to remove the old defective water heater and then to install the new professional quality water heater with obvious flawless skill, providing several superior/extra features which will result in superior function (which I would not have even known about, or required).  His work was methodical and efficient and cleaned up afterward, removing the old water heater for diposal/recycling.  Dan was very personable and demonstrated a genuine desire to provide excellent service.  I will be looking forward to using Dan's service in the future.

Dan showed up and was friendly and professional. He installed new waste piping, installed an under sink cleanout, and rodded out 42 feet of the line in order to clear it. Our double kitchen sink strainers were probably 40 years old and corroded at the base, which made them unable to be attached to the new piping. He cut and chiseled out both sink strainers (which took him awhile) and replaced them with new. The sink is now working great. We would use this company again.

We have previously used this company and have been very satisfied with their service.  However, this time something came up that I did not appreciate.  However, it was my fault for not looking at the invoice more closely prior to paying the technician. When I called to set an appointment, I believe that I spoke with the owner who quoted me $65 per unit labor plus parts.  However, on the final invoice there was an additional charge of $55 for "Truck Operational Surcharge".  I do believe that this should have been disclosed when I made the appointment.  Their work is good and their techs are professional etc. but this lack of disclosure is a turn off for me!

Our hot water heater has had recent problems.  One of Larry Hudson's employees had previously come out in early July to fix the hot water heater and replaced the thermocouplling, but explained that we had a small leak and most likely the water heater would die again.
Sure enough, the heater pilot light would not light up again, so called Larry Hudson to come out again on short notice.  They came out the next day to install a new 50 gal hot water heater.
Larry Hudson's employee spent about 4-5 hrs removing the old hot water heater and installing the new hot water heater (all per code).
Larry Hudson is such an honest company, that they credit us with the cost of the repairs that were made in July.
I probably could have found a cheaper price, but I know that Larry Hudson will do all the work correctly and per code.  I learned the hard way many years ago, that the work should be done to code otherwise you may have issues when it comes to sell your house.

Summary: They seem to be a little more expensive than their competitors, but they do the job old school (top quality parts, top quality work ethic, top quality plumbing). I got exactly what I needed taken care of QUICKLY and it was worth every penny. I will use them every time I need plumbing done.
It was a tough start as I think Dan was in a hurry with the initial referral at the house. After I called Larry to talk to him about the problem, everything changed. Larry and Dan came to the house and explained what was happening to my pipes and then gave me an estimate (Low - High) even though it all depended upon what was going on under the ground. Both Larry and Dan came to the house (after I changed the day at the last minute) to take the water heater out, dig up the concrete and ground, find the HUGE crack in my sewer pipe/dirt in the pipe, replaced it to code, and put the water heater back in (to code). Dan came the next day (Saturday) to finish off the work. After almost 2 weeks of not knowing what was going on with my house and getting the run-around from all sorts of different plumbers, Dan and Larry took care of it with skill professionalism.

The repairman, Dan,  showed up first thing on Monday morning.  The problem had developed over the weekend (don't they always?) and I didn't want to pay overtime, so asked for a Monday appointment.  He was quick to spot the leak source.  All of the plumbing companies I had called over the weekend, including his, had told me I'd ;probably need a new water heater and the prices they quoted for replacement were outrageous, while all of them said those were only estimates, since they couldn't tell me the real price until seeing the problem directly.

Dan was upfront with me and didn't try to jack up the price, as far as I could tell.  But I put a "C" for the price, because I think that the amount for a half-hour's labor and the part was a bit much -- even for a plumber, and even with the Angie's List discount.  And Dan left some old parts behind when he left, even though he said they had to do a surcharge because parts like the one he worked on had to be taken to a special disposal site somewhere in the county.
All-in-all, this was a positive experience and I will use this company again.

On 6/24/13 I realized that we needed a new water heater.  I called this company because they had previously provided good service.  An employee came out and one hour later called me with a quote. The job entailed replacing a 30 gallon water heater in the garage with a 40 gallon tank with a 12 yr warranty.  The wooden tank stand was no longer in code so had to be replaced with a metal stand, new straps were needed and the vent had to be trimmed and adjusted.  We agree to have the work done this morning at 8:30.  Job was done in a very professional manner.

Larry Plumbers, on time, responsive (same day and came after their posted hours), friendly, professional and had the highest attention to detail .  Instead of doing a patch job that may have lasted they have high standards and made sure that the job was done correctly and to last.  Excellent workmanship and attention to detail.

Larry Hudson Plumbing has done several jobs for me, both at my own residence and at a house my wife and I rent out.  They do quality work, the employees are friendly and professional.  My main gripe is the cost of doing business with them.  Maybe I'm just out of touch with industry standards, but it seems like they are charging $150/hr and more.  This is just an approximation, mind you.
There was one instance at the same house, where I asked Hudson Plumbing to check under the house for pipe leaks because the tenant had reported seeing standing water via the crawl space.  A Hudson plumber came out, crawled under the house through the mud and checked all the pipes for leaks.  He found none and the assumption ws made that either the tub or toilet in the bathroom had overflowed, maybe several times.  The assumption was correct, because the area under the house dried up eventually and has not been wet since.  I expected a bill for the inspection, but never got one.  So you have to average that kind of thing in with some of the high prices.
Also, when you call Larry Hudson Plumbing, you will always talk to Larry Hudson before a plumber is sent to your job.
