I do not recommend these people. They were extremely nice people but if you are not going to do the job right then you are no good to me.
He did this at his location where his shop is located. He came and picked up the furniture and dropped it off.
This job was done 6/20/2015 - 7/13/2015.
Raul came downtown, where we live, gave us an estimate, and made some good suggestions that we had not considered. Raoul was friendly and professional, available for phone contact always in less than a day, very customer oriented.
The work was done quickly, and Raul was able to accommodate a slight mid-course correction on the way the chairs were to be upholstered. We needed the table and chairs back more quickly than expected because we were expecting guests at our condo, and Raul was able to meet this new schedule as well.
We would certainly go to Franco's for any future upholstering, and recommend them highly -- Raul in particular -l- for a job well done.
As I looked at the samples, Raul provided very helpful information about them. He looked over my sofa to see if it needed refilling
of cushions or anything additional. It was in perfect condition so we moved on to fabric selection and price.
The price of the fabric was $877 and the labor was $920.
Raul delivered my sofa on 10/17/2014. and I was absolutely delighted, it was gorgeous.
Would I use Francos again? You bet I would!
I had 5 dining chairs that my husband's parents purchased in the early 1960's. They had been stored in a humid setting so the wood and the woven leather strapping on the seat and seat backs were in a bad condition. I had disassembled them to ship to CA and labeled all of the pieces so that they could be put back together right. Based on the reviews on Angie's List, I took the chairs to Franco's for repair. I went in person to make sure that they understood what I wanted because I wanted the leather straps replaces with some sort of webbing rather than leather. I was assured by their sales guy, Raul, that they could do the chairs without a problem. When I first went to pick up the chairs, they brought out two for me to look at - one had about half the number of straps as the original strapping and the other did not even have the strapping finished on the seat back. When I said I was not happy, they got Raul on the phone. At first he insisted that they had matched what I brought in exactly but I sent him a photo to show him that it was true. He offered to re-do them at no extra cost. I was asked to pay in full at that time and I should have refused.
A few days later, he texted me a photo of one of the chairs. It still was not right despite my telling them exactly how many straps needed to go in each direction and I had to reiterate what needed to be done again. A few weeks later, he texted me that the chairs were ready. I said I could pick them up two days later. When I got there, I was told only 3 of the 5 chairs were ready and Raul, again on the phone, offered to bring the other 2 chairs to my house later that day. Their entry room at their shop is dark that about all I could do was count the straps to ensure that they had at least done that right - it was the right number but upon closer inspection when I got the chairs into the light, I could see that the strapping was very uneven with large gaps between some straps and others practically overlapping each other. In addition, the wood had not been refinished well - it looked and felt like it had not been sanded at all. The strapping was stapled with what had to be at least 20 shiny staples on each end of each strap. The original straps were nailed and the nails were barely visible. On two of the chairs, there are broken staples poking through from the back to the front of the chair. They are sharp and clearly visible even at a distance. Neither of those were the ones brought out for me to look at before hand. Two of the chairs were put back together wrong - the front legs are backwards so the chairs don't even sit level. The strapping used appears to be different from what I was originally shown in the shop. They were going to order a different width but what they ordered looks more like seat belt material and not like the straps I was shown when I dropped off the chairs. In one of the texts with Raul, I said the strapping looked a bit odd and his reply was that this stuff was stronger than the other one - implying that they had indeed switched to something else. My response that it might be stronger but did not look as good went unacknowledged.
When Raul dropped off the last 2 chairs, I pointed out my issues (I had not yet noticed the backward legs as they were on the chairs he was dropping off). Instead of apologizing for the sloppy work - he made excuses. He claimed the broken staples were from the original straps (they were nailed not stapled so I know they were not) and that the staples had been broken when they tried to remove them because the wood was so hard. He claimed that they did sand but not too much so as to not damage to wood and that the wood looked bad because of it was "burned" - the chairs were never in a fire so I don't know what he was thinking. He said the straps were unevenly placed because they originally didn't put in enough and squeezed in a few later after I had asked for them to be redone with the proper number of straps. With respect to the exposed broken staples, he said that they could refinish the wood again to hide them - It doesn't even make sense! He didn't even have a response of the absurd number of staples they used or the sloppy way that they were applied. He did say they would take them back and redo them but at this point, I'm afraid that they will only make them worse.
This was not the standard upholstery job - the woven strapping, while simple, appears to have thrown them for a loop. Maybe they do better work with more traditional, upholstered furniture but if they didn't know how to do this, they should have said so. None of that excuses the fact that the chairs look terrible and they still tried to pass them off without so much as an "I'm sorry, it was the best we could do". It appears that no one did any QA on the chairs. Aside from a hard-to-see, texted photo, no one consulted me during the process about the use of staples or the change in the strapping material. It was really shameful the way that Raul made lame excuses for the errors and tried to pretend that the chairs actually looked ok. I feel I should be given at least a partial refund since they had several attempts to get it right and failed. I did suggest this but was only offered yet another re-do. I declined since I have good reason to believe that they will not do a better job and may in fact, actually make the chairs worse.
Raul and son delivered the finished couch a couple of days ago, and it's hard to put into words how beautiful it turned out. For once, we had gotten lucky and picked a good looking fabric. But the couch itself is really something, the wood looks gorgeous, you'd never know its 80 years old, Everythings fits perfectly, above all its really comfortable, and the workmanship borders on artistry.
For any kind of upholstery, furniture restoration, etc. I can't recommend Franco's Upholstery highly enough.
Raul came at my convenience, provided a quote and finished the job in a little over a week. He was very accommodating about day and time of delivery. I needed advice on quality of cushions and he seemed knowledgeable and offered helpful suggestions.
