When I called Bob again, nine months later, we picked up where we left off. He showed me several options for wool carpeting. In researching these options, I learned that most of the carpets, with the exception of Earth Weave, had conventional, chemical-filled backings and/or treated their wool with moth-proofing chemicals. No thank you. I went with Earth Weave carpet and padding.
Being so focused on carpeting, I completely forgot about the chemicals used during installation--specifically, glue for the padding, seam sealer, and seaming tape. Prior to installation, I asked Bob for the names of the products that the installer would be using so I could research them. The glue and the seam sealer checked out, but I couldn't find info on the seaming tape anywhere online. I finally called a few companies and found a seaming tape I thought would be lower in toxicity. Bob was very patient while I did my research, and he graciously agreed to purchase the seaming tape that I'd found.
When the installer arrived with my carpet, he showed me the differences between the seaming tape that BSA uses and the one I'd chosen. The one I'd chosen smelled horrible!! As it turned out, BSA Flooring had been one step ahead of me all along. The products they use are lower in toxicity, so I went with those. The fumes during installation were minimal, and I'm very happy with the outcome. BSA also offered me a warranty on the installation.
