When the electrical outlet was finished, he used an extra large cover that does not match existing outlets. For the fans, it was not explained that large holes needed to be cut into the drywall and was my responsibility to call someone else to patch. The under cabinet kitchen lights were supposed to be LED, but when he arrived he said the kitchen lights and the canned recessed lights were on back order. In the upper kitchen cabinets, he switched out white cables for black cable lines which looked terrible against the inside white cabinets. He spent half the day in the kitchen. When he left, there were bare wires hanging out of the wall above the sink and said he'd return once the lights were in. Never received a call back.
I didn't noticed he placed puck lights under the cabinets until I hired another electrician several months later and they were not LEDs. Got taken advantage of big time and didn't realize it until almost a year later.
The total bill (1 hour Labor ) $137.50, plus $48.00 for materials added to $185.50, minus $37.10 for Angie's list discount, yielding a final total of $148.40. This amount, with the discount, seemed reasonable. When I was called later this month by Mr. Beck for an evaluation of the work, I indicated it was good. The lights have worked well since the repair.
Then, I told him that my only problem was with his stated labor costs. The first half hour, which included transportation time, was priced at $190.00 per hour, to yielded a cost of $95.00 for the first thirty minutes, which, for me, was somewhat unreasonable. When I explained by feelings about this hourly rate for the first half hour, Mr. Beck argued with me that the first half hour rate was only $95.00. I tried to explain that at $95 for 30 minutes is actually an hourly rate of $190.00 per hour. Still not agreeing, he insisted his rate for the first half hour was only $95.00. Obviously, his second 30 minutes, priced at $42.50, is an hourly rate of $85.00, that might be considered more reasonable.
All in all, though the work done was good. However, I had three issues with this firm: (1) in answer to my inquiry about the cost for replacing halogen with an LSD lights, I felt somewhat pressured by the electrician urging me three times to replace my 10 halogen lights with LSD's; (2) the possibly misleading pricing on the invoice; and (3) the argument I got into, over what hourly RATES
were implied for his first and second half hour's labor, left me feeling rather distrustful of this firm. I certainly would NOT use them again, nor would I recommend them to any who may ask.
"Dear Angie's list member. Your concern #1: My technician repeatingly suggested the use of LED MR16 lamps due to the fact that the regular MR16 halogen lamps that you are using get extremely hot. Heat is the greatest enemy of electrical equipment. If you would use LED lamps, you would never have a problem with your fixture sockets again, save electricity, and do something good to our blue planet. Your concern #2: We ALWAYS inform our customers of our charge up front, before we schedule any appointments. Our rates are 95.00 dollars for the travel to your door including the first 30 minutes of work. Every additional 30 minutes of work is 42.50 dollars. Our hourly rate is 85.00 dollars. NOT 190.00 dollars. I have not the foggiest idea how you came with that amount. 95.00 dollars and 42.50 dollars are 137.50 dollars. You agreed to these charges before we scheduled. Our rates are also clearly stated on our website. It took my tech one hour replacing the sockets due to the fact that the socket conductors were burned short and that it was not easy to reconnect the new sockets to the burned short conductors. Again, this problem could be eliminated in the future with the use of LED lamps, which do not get hot. In addition we did a trip to our supplier prior to going to your residence purchasing special heat resistance porcelain connectors and the new sockets and spend additional time getting in out of your high rise building, checking in with the receptionist and carrying material, tools and a ladder in and out. No way that my tech could have had another hand to carry his invoice folder. Your concern #3: I am sorry that you felt rather distrustful of our firm. I do not recall having an agreement with you ever. I do not argue with my customers ever. I choose to go home happy rather than going home right. I am looking forward to provide you with outstanding customer service in the future. Martin Beck"
"And you are an awesome customer!"
Mr. Beck, the owner, personally made the estimate, ordered parts, and checked the work. He was very prompt. Very nice work and good advice. My only regret is that I didn't listen to him about the placement of one new light fixture.
Beck's employee John actually did the proposed work on the house. He handled the job in a very professional manner, all the while being nice enough (and patient enough) to thoroughly explain what he was doing when I asked questions. In all, the level of communication with the customer was excellent and I was kept informed of progress or changes from beginning to end. A good experience overall, and I would recommend this company to others.
