Pella windows have a metal frame. Most glass shops probably don't have the expertise to replace the glass without warping the frame. This one did. On our original call to Tommy's Glass, they recommended that we call Pella to see if Pella could do a warranty repair. From this I learned that every Pella window has a serial # which is used to identify type & date of installation. Found out that I was a few months past the 10-year warranty. Pella quoted a repair price of $460 which may seem steep but the repairman comes out of Hayward area so you have to pay for their travel time & you also have to schedule an appointment which can take 2 - 3 weeks. On the day I called Tommy's Glass, they came the same day, assessed the damage & disassembled the casement window to take the window with the broken pane back to the shop. Within a few hours, he was back with a new pane in place. The reassembly went quickly. I was prepared to pay $400 for the job but Robert Haas, the owner, surprised me with $247. When I tried to tip for the prompt service, he wouldn't take it so this report is my tip.
Would I use Tommy's Glass again? Definitely.
Mr. Haas offered two pieces of advice which made calling him very worthwhile:
1. If you have specialty windows like Pella, Anderson, etc., Call the manufacturer to see if the warranty is still effective*.
2. Add your windows to your homeowners policy. In my case, I was able to fix one pane painlessly (no boos) since I had a window that could be taken apart. However, sealed windows may require replacement of a whole panel which might be a 4-figure cost.
I have to add that on the initial search of Angie's List Tommy's Glass did not appear. I tried calling a couple of other firms on the list but they did not return calls. In one instance the voicemail box was full, a bad sign. On the others, the experience history was very thin. I lamented to a friend about my odyssey & he suggested Tommy's Glass since he had used them for his properties.
*Although I love my Pella windows, I am not happy with Pella, the company. Two issues:
1. The original company, through which I bought the windows, went out of business. So a large credit, due to a Pella double billing, went with it.
2. The windows received were not what I ordered although it was close enough that I let the discrepancy go due to trying to stay on schedule on my remodel of all windows. In all other respects, the windows (venetian blinds between the panes) are an every-day joy. It's too bad I can't say the same about my experience with Pella.
