The demolition team could have been more careful with our floors. Little less conscientious that we would have liked.
However, Steve gave great advice - since we didn't know much and he did a great job.
We would use them again!
We scheduled it for two weeks out because my wife and I still needed to finalize our granite selection. The plan was to get started on a Tuesday at 9AM. They were on-time and completed the tear out in a few hours. They took the remainder of the measurements they would need for the granite fabrication. The only thing that wasn't part of the plan was my wife and I had made some changes to what we wanted for a tile backsplach. Steve was so adaptable to what we wanted to do. He just kept saying we want you to be happy. This actually added an extra day to the plan where Steve would have to come back the following week and finish up even though he probably had other jobs that he needed to get going on. This was much appreciated by us though and we truly felt he wanted his customers to be happy. He said not to worry about it and they will be back on Thursday once they had the fabrication done for the countertops.
They were back on Thursday morning around 9AM to install the sink and the countertops as well as start the tile. On Thursday everything went as expected. The countertops were installed, sink was installed and part of the tile was installed. They returned on Friday to finish the rest of the backsplach and grout what they could. We still had one little section that needed to be completed and like I said Steve was very flexible to our needs. He was expecting to be done on Friday but we actually had to have him come out again the following week to finish up the rest of our tile work.
Our experience with S&D could not have gone better. I think Steve really does his best to take care of his customers. He was on-time, flexible to our needs and priced reasonably. I would definitely recommend using him if you have any sort of granite or tile work that needs to be done.
The first was at our other home in Charlotte, NC. They were both terrific from beginning to end. The price in California was a bit less per square foot, and the quality was Superior in both places with both Contractors.
Steve even worked in our home while we were on vacation-They are fabulous-you can trust them beyond the 'shadow of a doubt' to do the best possible work. Everyone who enters our Kitchen or Game room 'rave' about the quality of the work, and then again at the price!
Then there was a weeks delay because the stone shop would not give him a discount on the stone. Steve did not inform us of the shop unable to give us a discount. My husband and I had to continually follow up with him, till we got this information and told him we wanted to go ahead. We loved the stone, it was still in our budget, so we decided to go ahead and pay for it.
Steve came over to do measurements and we discussed what we wanted. He picked up the stone as agreed and set a date for it to be installed in the kitchen. When that day arrived, Steve was not present to do the install, it was done by his partner. My husband discovered that the edges of the countertop were not squared as agreed, but rounded. Again, we went ahead anyway, as we were eager to get our kitchen done. My husband had concerns about the install, which he expressed at the time, and I've followed up several times with Steve, and he keeps telling me he'll come back to address these, but he has not.
Our current concerns:
- Corners were not as agreed
- Counter top in one area is not level (discovered by the backsplash installer)
- Seams look like they were done by an amateur, they are messy.
- Many edges are chipped
- Stone not sealed properly, already showing water spots
- If you are looking for someone who is responsive, this is not the company you are looking for
In closing I'd like to say that, I really liked Steve, and believe that he may be experiencing some personal issues. However, it's no excuse for not doing right by us. He provides this product at a great price, so it may be worth it to some to go for price - and maybe this is an isolated incident. I have informed Steve of my concerns in writing, and while he responded that he would address them, he has not.
"I am only responding to this customer responce to explain myself. For a home owner to say "There is no excuse to not due right by them"! Is a pretty horrible responce after I explained myself. So here it is, The home owner called me and stated there were small chips that needed top be addressed. I do not like to exlpain or share my personal life but with ungrateful home owners like this I feel it is some times necessary. I explained to her I just found out my 19 year old son, had been diagnosed with a very agressive Sarcoma Canser tumor. Further I told her we were heading to surgery and I would get someone over there on tuesday the following week. We went into surgery for my son. I am sorry but "I did forget about her andher very very very small problem. But between trying to keep my mind right and my famiy strong, and the thought of loosing my son to canser. The repair slipped my mind. SO for her to say there is no excuse let me copmpare my sons canser or her repair. I have never left a customer in the way side. If I did that I would not be in business, and if she felt like that than I can only apolgize, . I did how ever explain the situation to her. I did spend a lot of free time with them at the stone suppliers. I did spend even more time making several calls to get them a better discount on their material, and help save them money. They selected a Honed granite material. Honed material is not as stain resistant as a polished material. The pores of honed granite are wide open and granite is not stain proof. Honed materials are susceptiable to marking and particualr absorption of oils, water and alcohol. So it is the home owners responsibilty to maintain and clean their stone counter tops. As for the edge detail they wanted a Mitered flat edge detail. I explained to them I charge more for this edge detail. They chose not to pay for the upgradded edge detail. Her husband wanted a 1/4 bevel on the top of the flat edge detail. His wife stated she wanted it with a small radious on the top. SO as we all were standing there in their kitchen the wife won the decision as to have the radious on the egde detail. Flat edge details will chip it is natural stone. I have no idea if the chips were there after the install or when the job was installed. It makes no difference to me. I WILL FIX THEM ALL!!!!!! As far as the unlevel of the stone counter tops go. I cannot do anything if they hired an unqualified or unlicensed cabinet installer to install their cabinets. It is not my responsibilty to level cabinets. We can only do so much with a poor foundation to install counter tops. As far as a business owner being on an install. I personally cannot be on every install. I do make every attempt to make it to every job. My business partner Jose was on there instal, he is not an employee is is a business partner.. He or I is always on every install. We do everything in our power to make every home owner satisfied with their projects. With that said we are always willing to address any home owners complaints. The problem I have is that this is not a case of "I will call that home owner later when I feel like it"!!!!! My son has canser he was going to leave for college in January that is not going to happen now. The thought of loosing my son has is the worst thing I have ever delt with in my whole life. So I do Sincerely apolgize for any inconvience I have caused it was not with any ill feelings of screwing or disappointing any of my customers. So with that said, I can only say with this customers responce to me and my business, I can only hope you would understand, This is an isolated event. I have no ill feelings towards them and will still always do everything in my power to make every home owner completely satisfied with our work. Have a most wonderful Holidays Sincerely, STEVE VASQUEZ"
