rooter-man inspected water heater...said i needed to replace a part...estimate was $712...i said that is quite high...i asked how much was the part and how much was labor...he said about half each...i assumed about $350 for the part and $350 for labor...i asked how long labor would take...he said about 4 hours
he said it was too late to buy part, but he would be back first thing in the morning
the first thing the next morning (about 11am) rooter- man showed up...the part was a simple part that had been replaced on my heater before (at a much, much lower cost)...while he was installing i took the part box and looked it up on the internet...i found it on sale for $112 (at retail, which i know he did not pay)...simple installation ...about one hour (most of which was emptying and refilling the heater)
i questioned the estimate...the part was nowhere near $350 and the labor was nowhere near 4 hours
basically i had signed the estimate and was screwed
i later e-mailed the parent company (not easy to find out how to contact parent company)...they replied a few weeks later and offered a $100 rebate
basically, rooter-man scammed a non-mechanical senior who was without hot water
