Russell now owns and operates under "NEW-SCAPES" with a different business license.
His design process is very slick! For those who are visual people, this is a great way to do a project. We gave them a "B" on price because we didn't get other estimates. His bid was in line with what we had expected to pay based on a previous landscape project we did in 2006 which we adjusted for inflation. The company is very busy so his prices may be better than we assume.
The entire project took about 5 weeks or so as projected. We only had a couple down days, otherwise someone was always here doing something. His crew is friendly and eager to please and are very hard workers. I gave a "B" for quality because I felt how they planted the actual plants was not up to "my" standards (holes too small, not enough planting mix supplemented etc. Time will tell (we have a 6 month warranty). The cement work was beautifully finished as was the overall design which I would have not envisioned.
The major problem was communication, or actually a lack thereof. We sent several emails, text & calls to Russell without reply. While we know he is busy running several crews, the lack of communication was unacceptable and quite frustrating. When he would touch base I had many things to address. That being said, he resolved any issues that we had to our satisfaction and our yard looks fabulous! Our project was done on time and as budgeted which cannot be said for most projects.

Cal-Scapes, now Newscapes did my landscaping, patio, and dog yard. The quality of work was just mediocre as we had to tell the workers to do several things or change many things. For instance they would put rocks back in the holes when planting plants. They took 5 weeks on a 2-3 week job max. Many times the workers would be standing around waiting for supplies. The work looked nice in the end, but I think troubles will occur. I have already noticed the gravel in my dog yard is getting thin and the weed barrier can be seen in several places. The sandstone patio and walkway is already showing signs of cracking only a week after completion. I will say that Russ is a salesman and talks a good game, but also has an excuse for why many things went wrong. After the fact I would have paid the extra 3k and went with Lavish Gardens.

My garden is all purple and I am not happy with that. We were talking about my drip system but there were some minor adjustments that needed to be made. The main issue was that I wanted it extended to another part of the yard. We had even discussed how the piping would have to be placed. When they came back to do the work, the guy didn't even remember talking about it and the contract was too vague to have it explicitly mentioned.

CAL-SCAPE WAS VERY AFFORDABLE. THEY WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND THE PRICE WAS GOOD. THEY DID A VERY GOOD JOB. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEIR SERVICE. THE OFFICE STAFF WAS GREAT TO WORK WITH.
