I have 3 requirements for a service that I will call good and reuse: 1. Reliable, 2. Comfortable, 3. Exceeding expectations. The service I have received from GIV Appliance Service Co., performed by Igor and his assistant, meets all of above.
I had a broken furnace which my home warranty plan declined to cover, so I had to go on the market and shop for HVAC repair. I did my homework, screened through tens of service providers (including SEARS, Home Depot, appliance repair service providers, and HVAC specialists) from yelp, angie?s list, and HVAC websites, and called 4 of them to come for diagnostics. I knew I had to pay service call fees to all of them, but I think it is better than blindly go with only one voice.
===== Frustrating Experience With OTHER Service Providers =====
I stated clearly I want to repair, and don?t want to replace my unit unless I absolutely have to.
Out of those 4, one took a look at the unit and suggest a replacement, without any diagnostic.
One suspect problem resides in gas valve, WITHOUT any evidence or systematic testing, charged $700 for repair and later took back the offer and only offered replacement instead, because of a ?dangerous? sticker he found on the gas pipe from gas company ? he insisted the gas company tagged the furnace unit, and only replacement can resolve the problem. ( I found it is not true because I later called the gas company, and they confirmed that a tag on the gas pipe indicates a problem on the pipe not the furnace unit, and a plumber can fix the issue, which further reminded me that it was fixed long time back ? I simply forgot to take down the tag).
I called both GIV and another service to come the same afternoon. They both gave a 12-2 window, GIV came at 12, the other service didn?t show up until 1:30, so I send the latter service back.
===== Reliable Service With GIV=====
Igor demonstrated his capability that he can fix the issue for sure.
He and his assistant have to come to my place twice as the first time, the time they budgeted wasn?t enough to completely resolve the problem (it wasn?t a straight forward fix, which I know from the fact that my home warranty declined the service). They showed up on time both of the times. They were also geared up with many diagnostic tools. They dressed tidy but slightly worn clothes from which I know they can really get on to the ground and get the work done.
After I stated I want a repair, I heard NO sales pitch from them ?not a single word.
Igor is experienced, knowledgable, and also possesses very strong systematic troubleshooting skills that I rarely see in technicians/contractors that I have experienced. He understands how the system works together and performed serial testing from part to part to locate or rule out the problem, which made me confident that he is capable to fix the unit.
I was next to them and observing their work. Holding a Master?s degree in Electrical Engineering myself, I could tell the way Igor handling the wires, connecting circuits were based on his fully understanding of the system and the problem, not some sort of ?trail and error? activities.
He located the root cause, which was a malfunction between the pilot and gas valve, NOT the gas valve itself as the other service provider suggested. He was prepared with the parts and was able to replace them on the spot, once he located the problem ( the second visit).
===== Comfortable Service With GIV =====
Throughout the repair, Igor showed his honesty, that he was here to help me not take advantage of me. I can trust the suggestions he provides as I know that is for my own good.
Igor thinks in the customer?s shoe. He provides advice but does not push or threaten for a decision. My control board in the furnace was old and discontinued. he prepared a new board for troubleshooting, so that he could rule out problems in that part. Afternoon the unit was fixed, he provided me an advice to change the control board as well since it was old and will die soon. But he made it neutral and left the decision to me. I didn?t feel I was pushed or lured. Again, because of my education degree, I know he was telling the truth because I recognized some of the components on the old control board were from the 80s. I took his advice and replaced the control board as a preventative maintenance investment, and I do not need to pay extra labor cost.
Igor was also polite, well-manner, who also possess a good sense of humor, but at the same time very serious about getting work done. He stayed where he needed to be, and didn?t step into any other places in my property, not even use of restroom or wash his hands.
===== Exceeding Expectations =====
Everything I listed above demonstrates the service was of great quality. But Igor didn?t stop there, he exceeded my expectation.
Price as a main factor: With a good 4 hour of work, he charged only $600, including labor and parts ? a very competitive service charge comparing to other providers. He could have ripped me off, but he didn?t.
After he confirmed the problem was fixed, he also tested my whole HVAC system to make sure AC, fan and heater are all functioning correctly together.
By inspecting the unit, he pointed out that the furnace wasn?t installed correctly so some electrical wires and pipes were stretched out. As he was fixing the malfunctioning parts, he extended my electrical wires and changed the gas pipe to a longer one.
After he checked everything was working fine, he patiently put back all the parts and recovered the unit to its original looking. ( comparing to the other service provider I had, who took off the front pane of the furnace and didn?t put it back).
Igor is a great technician, I will keep using his service and recommend it to others as well.

Fortunate for me, he had all of the needed parts on him and no unnecessary time was spent on the fixtures.
