Anyway, he arrived 45 minutes early but didn't ask if it was ok to start working... we needed to bring the dogs in from outside first but he went straight into the back yard anyway.
The owners decided not to spray inside the house that day because of the dogs; The Kid acted unhappy about that and called his boss. He then told me that they wouldn't be spraying the entire yard because they thought it was smaller. That still makes no sense to me, why would you only spray part of the yard for bugs? I already told Sam the lot size etc for the job... ok whatever, we agreed to pay extra for him to do the whole yard.
At this point The Kid had been dusting the outside of the house with a wand. The owner approached me, concerned that cobwebs/spider webs were still all over outside. I went to look, and he was right. I politely asked The Kid "how clean is it supposed to be?" He promptly yelled at me that he's already been doing it too long, that he's not supposed to clean the exterior longer than 20 minutes, and that if I want him to he can call his boss. Whoa, ok, sorry, I was just asking.
After that, we were supposed to show him into the home so where he would enter the attic to remove the traps. I told him I would help him with our ladder since his small ladder would not work. He became very reluctant and worried, asking me "Wait how high up is it? I don't know, I'll need to see it first." Our ceiling height for the attic is only 12 feet.
We the set the ladder up and I held it while he climbed up. He poked his head inside the attic, shined his phone around for a moment and said, "No, there's no traps up here." I told him that the traps are up inside, he couldn't see them from the ladder. I offered him a flashlight and told him the light switch was just above him if he actually went in. What happened next was like the twilight zone.
He freaked out, ran outside, saying that he needed a minute. I waited and figured something was wrong so I followed him. I asked from a distance "Is everything ok?" and he yelled at me to "Stay back! Just give me a minute, stay back!"
At this point I had no idea what his problem was. I knew he was probably calling his boss. Sure enough, within minutes Sam called me on my cell and proceeded to yell at me and threaten me. "WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? YOU CAN'T ABUSE MY EMPLOYEES LIKE THAT!" I was flabbergasted. Nothing like that had even happened. He accused me of abusing his employee, forcing him up into a 120 degree attic without lights, yelling at him that his work wasn't good enough, forcing him to work in the sun longer than is necessary... none of that actually happened. And I detailed all the specifics of the job with Sam when he scheduled the appointment so there should not have been any discrepancies.
I didn't know what else to do, or how to explain this to the homeowners... but I had to fire Facility Pest Control and ask them to
leave.
Above all, I’ve never had such strange and unprofessional experience with a vendor… and I deal with many types of vendors all the
time.
PS: After sending FPC away, another vendor came out FOR FREE for a walk thru estimate. The nicest guy went into the attic without a problem, and inspected it thoroughly for nearly 30 minutes. Clearly it’s not an abusive environment. I’ve been up there several times and have never had an issue.
"We always strive to do exactly what our customers ask us to do.Unfortunately in this case my employee and I agreed that this customer was trying to take advantage of our service. This job was attempted on August 8th 2014 on over a 100 degree day and the expectation of someone to crawl through the attic to check traps another company had set, we thought was unfair due to the fact that it is more than 120 degrees in the attic! Normally we will look from the access door and remove rats from the area immediately near the opening. That was not good enough for this customer. The technician Always removes webs at all jobs to the best of his/her ability, but again for the customer to follow behind us and ask us to make it perfect is also beyond what our normal protocol is. Since this job was quoted over the phone we obviously had some misunderstanding of their expectations. From now on we will verify the size of a property before we quote a price over the phone, so that the technician knows exactly what they are expected to do. We are glad they are happy with the original pest control company and hope they have them check their own work as is normal protocol."
