Pete handy was great. He came out measured, discussed our options and ultimately ordered the fireplaces.
Installation day came and Mike arrived. Unfortunately the general contractor who had undertaken the gas line work got it wrong (despite our best efforts, pictures, instruction sheets installation booklets discussions the lines were wrong) West coast had to leave unable to complete any work except delivery. When the lines were finally ( almost ) correct 1 month later. Mike and his partner turned up again. They did an excellent job. They arrived on time, were professional, courteous and respectful of our home. They will have to return is put all the 'fixins' in place so we can fire them up when the other construction is done. Thank you west coast fireplaces/insulation.

Pete has been so patient! We first started talking to him over a year ago. He came out to measure our opening and determine which brands would fit. He took phone calls and e-mails answering our questions. He waited while we had the gas line put in, existing brick hearth removed, and stone hearth/surround installed. Finally, he came back again to make sure everything would work. He even arranged to have his guy come on a Saturday to do the install which went smoothly. Pete even showed up that day.

We probably visited every fireplace store from San Francisco to San Jose. Several companies came to the house and gave estimates, but Pete beat everyone. We love our new fireplace! It's warm, efficient, and looks so much better than what existed before. If you're considering a gas insert, Pete's your man!

It was a free estimate. They were responsive and timely. They were pretty pleasant to work with, but I haven't had any work done yet.

Their price was higher so I went with another company. The estimator said there was no way to provide a bid. It would have to be time and materials. Then I received a bid via email soon thereafter. The estimator's comment, contradicted by the companies actions was the reason I gave them a B for professionalism. It just seemed curious to me.

Overall it went very well. West Coast was very prompt in getting me the estimate and very good at giving me options to choose from (different manufactureres, sizes that would fit in the opening, etc). Once I decided to go with West Coast, they placed the order and set up an installation date for the day after the fireplace was expected to arrive. Unfortunately, the unit was delayed from the manufacturer, but Pete was good at letting me know the new ETA and adjusted their schedule so they installed it the day after it arrived. They installed the fireplace as promised, didn't find any "extras" to charge me during installation, and overall did a great job.

I did not hire this company due to their contract insufficiencies, on top of having the highest price.

The sales guy was punctual on the day he was scheduled to come out for the estimate. I specifically asked him to provide me with the estimate in three separate parts: 1) blown-in for the exterior walls; 2) removal and hauling only of the debris in the attic; and 3) installation of new batting for the attic. He promised to get an estimate to me the next day. Four days later, we receive a very curt email from someone at West Coast with a estimate for $1300 that failed to list out the component cost for the three parts above. I called the sales guy for additional clarification on the estimate, but he didn't even have the courtesy to return my call. I felt that our estimate was handled in a very unprofessional manner.
Response from West Coast Insulation, Inc.

"WE RECEIVED THE REQUEST FOR THE ESTIMATE ON A TUESDAY, THURSDAY WE DID THE ESTIMATE, FRIDAY THE BID WAS MAILED, MONDAY IT WAS E-MAILED. THE ESTIMATOR WHO ESTIMATED THIS JOB HAD ONLY BEEN WITH THE COMPANY FOR TWO WEEKS. HE MADE A MISTAKE BY NOT TELLING OUR CONTRACT MANAGER, WHO PRODUCES THE CONTRACTS, TO INCLUDE EACH OPERATION AS A SEPARATE PRICE. WHEN I CONTACTED THE MEMBER, I TOLD HER THAT THE E-MAIL QUOTE COULD HAVE BEEN REPLIED BACK WITH A REQUEST TO BREAK OUT THE BID IN SEPARATE PRICES. SHE TOLD ME THAT THE ESTIMATOR SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE. WHEN THE BID WAS E-MAILED, CHRISTIE, OUR CONTRACT MANAGER, USED EXCLAMATION MARKS: HI! ATTACHED IS THE PROPOSAL! THANKS, CHRISTIE. THIS IS A "CURT" RESPONSE ACCORDING TO THE MEMBER, VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. *ANGIES LIST: THIS RESPONSE SHOULD BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE OF ITS INCORRECT CONTENT AND MALICIOUS INTENT."

Rick Montero gave me a bid, and I chose West Coast over others b/c he exuded experience. I had to do the job when my neighbors were away, so I booked it 1.5 months in advance and told Rick time was of the essence. He said they'd arrive at 8:30 a.m. and I should save parking for their truck. I did, with my car, but they did not arrive, and after two hours I had to move my car or get a ticket. When I called to see where they were, they'd stopped to do another job! They finally arrived at 11:30 and ate lunch. After getting to work, they stopped after an hour because they'd run out of cellulose! The worker called Rick, who told him in Spanish to just finish with fiberglass!!! If I hadn't investigated why they stopped, I might never have known they planned to use a material that doesn't provide as good sound insulation and isn't as green. That's dishonest. When I called Rick and said I wanted cellulose, per contract, he gave me grief. After complaining to the office, they credited $150.

It took a couple of calls to get a hold of someone, but after that our experience was extremely good. They came by to do the estimate within 24 hours I think, and were back to do the work within 48 hours. They were punctual, professional, very pleasant, and told us how to get a rebate on a portion of the work from PG and E, etc. I highly recommend them.

This company is great to work with. From quoting to delivery of service they make it super easy. I called on Monday, estimator came by THAT SAME DAY and the work was done the next Monday. I even had a problem (an error on my side) they came back cheerfully to help me out. I highly recommend them!

I emailed West Coast for a free estimate on the insulation job. The estimator came the next day without notice. Surely he missed us and left with his business card. I then called him a few times, and he never returned my call. I then called the company, and it did not seem like the company can do anything. I turned over to Universal Insulation and then had a very good experience with them.
