I moved into a house with the understanding that I'd replace a fence to settle a dispute between the previous owner and the neighbor. (not fun!) Called a number of companies, and of the ones who actually responded, Plane & Stain were the most responsive and least expensive. Owners Justin and Ian responded quickly to every question from me and my neighbor (nothing like having two bosses for one job!) and we were able to schedule the work within two weeks (instead of the three or four months I'd been hearing from other companies!). Jose and Jaime were awesome on the job and left the site neat every day and did great work. They were even able to build the fence around an existing tree and roots. (See photo - the messy pallet is all mine not theirs!) I would definitely work with them again!

The fence turned out great - it's beautiful. The crew was super efficient and finished in only half a day, which surprised and pleased the surrounding neighbors. The crew cleaned up after themselves. Despite a sticky neighborhood situation that could have derailed this small project, Ian and Justin remained understanding, flexible, patient, and professional throughout the entire process. They never made me feel like a particularly "high-maintenance" client, though I would admit that I was (for this project, anyway). All this was going on when they were flush with jobs and didn't need our business. They returned every phone call, email, or text promptly. I don't have the time to learn every detail about how to build a good fence in order to supervise a crew and make sure they are doing everything right. I just want to hire the right guys, and let them do their job. I think these are the right guys. Plane and Stain's bid was a little higher than the others, but I think they build a better fence and they are wonderful to work with.

Amazing! Ian and Justin were great to work with. My in laws and my parents have both used them since and their experience was like mine, fantastic!

This is the third time I have hired Justin and Ian of Plane & Stain for a project at my vintage home, near downtown Redwood City. I had an existing corner deck that I wanted to extend across the width of the back of my yard. I did have other providers give me quotes, but I went with Plane & Stain for the following critical reasons:

1. Quality of previous projects at my home
2.  Available project start and completion date
   
3. Attention to detail and doing the job right
4. Reasonable quote and project scope, including materials, fully detailed

I met with Justin once to discuss the project. Within a day Ian had the quote to me. Within 2 days I had signed on the dotted line and secured a start date. To my surprise, and delight, they were able to start a couple of days early! Justin came out to get his crew started. I was able to remind him about not only my deck requirements, but also a solution for blocking off a space that kept my yard from being completely secure for my dogs.

Work started Friday afternoon, the 24th. All the footings were put in that day. Saturday was all the structural framing and start to laying down the deck boards. Monday morning, the 27th, Justin and Ian were here bright and early. I had sent them a text with a very simple question. They decided to come out and answer my question and also be there when the crew showed up.

The deck was finished just after lunch. Justin came out to do his inspection. I let him know how happy I am and that no doubt that they will be back for another project. I am probably looking at new fence next year and they will be the people that I hire.

My house was built in 1894. I find it extremely important that the people I hire are not just competent, but also respectful of what a special place it is.

This project was very successful.  There was excellent communication with the owners, Ian during contractor selection and bid finalization, and Justin on the job site.  We had evaluated several bids and checked all available reviews.  The existing fence had been braced in the past to maintain vertical and the posts appeared to be in good condition, unlike the skirts and boards.
After selecting Plane & Stain, we spoke with Ian about retaining the posts to save money and he professionally conveyed his rationale for replacing the posts and wouldn't do the job that way, offering to let us out of our agreement if we wanted to do that. This gave us even more confidence in the company's quality standards. 
Together we planned the coordination of work with our gardeners to remove vines and vegetation that had grown over and between fences, and to protect pantings we wanted to retain. They adjusted their starting time to be compatible with HOA rules. They showed up early on the scheduled day but waited until the designated hour to start the noisy demolition. Justin was on site to make sure everything was in order before turning it over to his foreman. They encountered some unexpected issues early that required some longer boards to get the necessary height (to fully cover views of the adjacent fence) and they quickly made the arrangements to get them and stay on schedule. 
The workers were hard workers, professional, and communicated well with each other and with us. The job was started and completed at the time they said and the finished product looks great.  Our owners were happy with the result. We were very pleased with the performance of Plane and Stain on all aspects of this project.

They were great. They installed the fence and it turned out very great.

Plane and Stain was a great company to work with. Ian and Justin were very friendly and they did a great job. We've had our fence and gates for over a year now and had no issues with them. There was just one issue in the building process that was minor -- the gate on the side of our yard was attached to a post on a existing fence. The post itself wasn't plumb, so one of the panels on the gate isn't straight. I wish I had been made aware that this would be a problem before the gate was built so that we could have explored other possible options. It isn't a big deal as the gate is more for security rather than for looks -- we hardly use the gate at all. Justin and Ian offered to come fix the post for us, which I have yet to call them and have them do so obviously it hasn't been a huge issue.
We have been very happy with our fence and gates and would hire them again.

They did a good job. They were very responsive to my e-mails and calls.

I got this company from Angie's List and they were excellent all around and the price they charge was fair. I got four bids and they were in the middle. When I call them up they said they'll come out and give me a bid but they can't get through me for at least two months on December. I said to go ahead and give me a bid and I like them so much. I waited and they showed up on December 2nd. They told me when I first started that if I got any questions to give them a call before they got here. When they came out I had a couple of suggestions and they immediately did what it was. They're very good to work with and they have excellent workman and the people that run the company.

Plane and Stain are terrifically professional from quote to finish. They return emails and phone calls promptly, answered all my questions, and proved very flexible during installation challenges. Their crew is amazing (they run only one crew so you're assured your getting their and quot;Aand quot; team). Start time was 7 am and they were ready to go at 7 on the dot. At this time of year there isn't full light that early, but the crew of four guys had my old fences down and packed on the disposal truck before the sun was fully up. All my requirements were addressed from building the fence between properties in one day (I was concerned for my neighbors dogs), to adapting the fencing to a change in grade between two properties (they added additional 1 x 8 pressure treated wood to the base of the fence so I could back fill the change in grade with rock and not have dirt and rock against new redwood fencing)

They gave excellent service and excellent workmanship. Overall, it was a good experience. The response was excellent.

The company is run by twin brothers - Justin and Ian, both of whom were actively involved in coming out to the house to measure and prepare the bid. I received the proposal the next day as promised. They employ only one team of workers and this team was very experienced and worked well together. The job started about 3 weeks after the initial contact and took 2 days to complete. The brothers came every day, first thing in the morning and last thing at night to check on progress both with their foreman and with me. At the end of the job I asked for a couple of extra things to be done and this was also handled promptly and satisfactorily.
I have no hesitation in recommending Plane and amp; Stain to my friends and neighbors and I will use them for a future deck project also...

From start to finish, Justin and Ian were a pleasure to work with. They are extremely professional and have a wealth of expertise. They were able to provide us with valuable feedback regarding materials and construction. They helped us work with the City when we made changes to our plans. We had other contractors on the job site and they did an excellent job working and communicating with them. Justin and Ian were very flexible in meeting our needs. Their customer service is superior and they genuinely care about their customers. We will definitely be using them again!

They did a great job, and even gave me some great suggestions about how I could finish the project. They were also great at answering my questions, and responding. I also like that they do a good job cleaning up.

They came in with a reasonable bid and did a good job. The job was done very quickly, was nicely done and I am happy with their work. They are a good, honest, local company that is friendly and easy to work with. I will use them again in the future.

Family owned business with small crew. Bid out to 3 vendors, this company was most reasonable for work performed. Everyone on time, performed job as promised, very, very nice people. Found a small crack in our gate from a nail after work was completed. Owner responded to my email the next day and agreed to replace in the next two weeks. We will absolutely use them again for additional fence work. In doing a remodel, we have found people don't always do what they say they'll do, and this company DOES.

From the get go, I liked Ian and Justin's approach. They were very consultative and really seemed interested in helping us with all the questions we had first - and getting the job second. Because we didn't really know what we were doing (had been putting off this project for years) that meant they really had to educate us which they did with a smile. Even when we presented them with the unique railing design, they did some research on their own to help advise us on what we needed to do. They arrived on time, worked all day long, cleaned up each day and checked in periodically (project took about 2 weeks) to make sure we were aware of the status of the project. They weren't the most or least expensive but did quality work at a reasonable price. I would recommend them to anyone with a deck or fence project and don't be afraid to throw something different at them. I've got some fencing and another deck that I will be working on and they have made it easy for me to just call them and have them do the work rather than getting a bunch of estimates again.

Their price was good. They were very professional and they worked quickly. They got it done and made sure that there wasn't any issue with it.

Once they started, they had the old retaining wall down before I knew it. They took care in moving an old jasmine bush out of the way (which pleased me to no end!) The post hole digger they had only helped with the first foot down and it was manual digging from there.... and there were lots of posts! As you can see from the photos they did an excellent job. Definitely hard working Craftsmen!

The new fence and gate is solid and well built. The fence comes in at an angle and the gate was built to accommodate that angle. Again the work of a craftsman.

No shoddy job by these guys. Ian is easy to work with and thanked me for the job. I will definitely recommend him and his crew - and call him again the next time I need this kind of work done.

Went with this company because all of my questions were answered either in person or in an email followup. Their price was mid range in the estimates I got but it was totally money well spent. The resulting work was on time, excellent and all concerns before, during and after were addressed to the my satisfaction - big time. I can't say enough about how this company will work to satisfy the customer completely. If you have a project - hire these guys. My neighbor hired them to fix a gate problem immediately after my job because they were impressed with their work and customer focus.

It went GREAT! I read a POSITIVE review on Angie's list and gave them a call. I believe Justin came the same day to look at the property in order to give me an estimate. It took them only 1 or 2 days to email me a very detailed and thorough estimate of work (which was competitive with other bids). They worked patiently with me while I rethought the fence design and had them re-quote it in a few different ways (wood types and design). They were always completely easygoing and very responsive and prompt. Once I gave them the go ahead, they showed up for work and completed the project in just 2 1/2 days - even with sprinkling rain. While working they asked my opinion many times just to make sure I would agree with where something would line up or how they would make a height match. They were so conscience of my opinion and wanted to make sure that the work they were doing was exactly what I wanted. Their main fence builder is very talented and speedy. I was quite pleased with the quality of cedar they brought for the front fences, and Justin even went back to the East Bay to exchange some of the boards which he thought were not of the best quality. Perfectionists do exist! I realized that the cedar boards would look best if they were stained to match our front door (instead of to weather to a grey color) and Justin was completely willing to figure out how they could stain all these boards before installing them and all with a pleasant smile on face. I paid them time and materials for this part. The one thing I didn't do beforehand was look at the hardware. I would have chosen something silver, but they brought black. So be it. I am still thrilled with the work and amazed that there are contractors out there who like their job, and who strive to please their customers. Plane and Stain is a great business. I recommend them with the highest remarks ***** 5 stars.
