We moved out of our house in late March 2013; the building permit to begin demolition came through in May 2013. Throughout the project we met with Ken on a weekly basis, and connected via email or phone throughout the week as needed. He was always very responsive. We were out of the house for more than a year which was longer than we expected. We added and changed some things along the way?which caused some delays. We also had to add fire sprinklers (a city requirement), and the engineer we chose added to some delays as well.
Initially, we didn't know exactly what we wanted the remodel/addition to be. Ken pointed us in the direction of finding our architect (someone he had worked with on projects). Ken made several recommendations throughout the project regarding which vendors we might contact, but never in a pushy way. All of the vendors we worked with who knew Ken had genuine praise for him. Ken was really good about communicating any issues, and made some great suggestions throughout the project of things we might want to consider (coffer ceilings for example). We often ran ideas by him, and felt he was honest in his responses. The relationship with Ken was definitely a collaborative one. Ken and his crew are hard-working, polite, respectful and trustworthy. We felt very comfortable with the crew from the very beginning; Ken seems to have a solid team of people who care about the work they?re doing. It definitely shows in the final product.
To sum it up, we love our house! When friends and family have stopped by, we know they like what they see. This of course makes us feel good about the thousands (seems like) decisions we made along the way, including the decision to hire Ken Bloomquist?s company. This was a huge project and investment for us. We would definitely recommend Ken, and won?t hesitate to call upon him again for any future projects. We are more than happy to serve as a reference for Ken.
Duration: It took slightly longer than expected largely because the roofing and porch work didn't happen until the end of the project, in winter, and encountered weather delays. Otherwise things happened basically on schedule.
Cost: The final cost was very close to the starting estimate, not quite 10% over, or well within reasonable expectations. There were a few additional costs as the demolition revealed weirdnesses (one wall built of 2x3 lumber, not 2x4, for example), but nothing major.
Complexity: The framing and drywall was quite complicated as the ceilings were vaulted to follow the contours of the existing roof (which has ridges in two directions) while also accommodating huge new structural beams. All the roof rafters had to be reinforced and new piers added to support the new beams. The result is a ceiling with a lot of planes, corners and seams and it came together beautifully. In addition, I am super picky about details such as alignment and spacing, and I'm very happy with the level of attention there.
Issues: Not everything went perfectly but the things that didn't got fixed quickly. It helped that we were still living in the house and I reviewed what was happening every day. The crew got 99% of everything perfect without my input, but just a few times I pointed out things that weren't as expected, and those were fixed right away (or sometimes my concerns were unfounded).
Punctuality and responsiveness: The main crew was here to work every single day we expected them, extremely punctual, very nice guys, easy to work with. Ken came by at the beginning of every single day, and was always available to meet whenever we had a question or concern. The flooring crew was the only crew that sometimes didn't show on the day we expected, but they were never away for long. Overall the folks who worked on the house were a pleasure to have around.
Cleanliness: A four-month gut and remodel of the biggest room of the house is never going to be super tidy, but the dust control measures and the cleanup and the end of each day worked well to keep the rest of the house fairly clean, and the living room passable (important since the kitchen's on the other side of it). It helped that we brought our large Jet air filter up from the garage and ran that whenever a lot of dust was generated.
Overall, highly recommended. Only don't take up all their time as I still have a kitchen and two bathrooms to do.
"Thanks [member name removed] for the great review. My guys and I really liked working with you and [member name removed] on your project. What a great one of a kind design. And thanks again for the referral.."
The work was done well, in similar fashion to the previous kitchen remodel. The crew (several who had worked at our home previously) was courteous, professional and generally neat. We did make a number of changes along the way, and felt that Ken addressed the changes well, doing change orders as needed, but not over-charging or nickel-and-diming over small changes.
Minor complaints would be that some things took a while to complete, and there were a few minor quality items that cropped up (door alignment, paint) but they were all corrected. And to be fair, we did make some late decisions and changes that may have impacted the schedule. Ken and his team were very flexible around the changes.
The end result was very good, and we are extremely pleased with the outcome of the work. The price was acceptable, the crew was good, and we are very pleased with the result. We would definitely use Bloomquist again, and would recommend them to others considering kitchen, bath, bedroom or other major remodeling projects.
During the demolition portion of the project, he worked quickly and cleanly. Demo was hauled away and the remodel commenced. From start to finish, we always had a positive working relationship with Ken. As to be expected with any major home project, delays and minor issues presented themselves, but Ken was always able to quickly arrive at a solution to fix the issue. Furthermore, we did lose our patience on more than several occasions due to some construction oversight (which was more often our fault for issues such as not being specific to outlet placement, grout color, etc), but Ken was always patient in working with us and ensured us that he would handle the problem. And every single time, he never disappointed and quite literally, he would save the day. He has a great rapport with all of his subcontractors and team members, and he was always available to us any time of day. In a highly stressful environment for the homeowner, Ken always maintained a steady demeanor and was very easy to work with.
Moving on, his quality of work is exceptional. We have received a myriad of praise for the craftsmanship and the workmanship. The tilework that was done in the bathrooms and kitchen is top notch; the baseboard was evenly installed throughout; the painting is even without spatter. And if the work was not done to our standards, Ken would work with us until we were satisfied (e.g. we had some issues with the staining of the hardwood and Ken gladly re-stained those ?problem? areas for us). Also, Ken never used low quality materials (e.g. the support beam was a solid wood beam on the order of 24? x 12? x 15? and I suspect other contractors might use compressed wood). His painters were amazing, and even after the painting was done, Ken had the painters return to touch up those areas that were damaged/dinged after we had moved back in. His team was also a great to work with and we were able to work with them on minor issues that did not always necessitate Ken?s oversight.
It was our pleasure to work with Ken. He made the difficult task of a major remodel as manageable and stress free as possible (if there ever is such a thing as a stress-free remodel). There are also no hidden costs associated with his original quote. The cost of the remodel ended up falling in line with his original estimate. If something was going to cost extra (and these were normally large ticket items like extensive subfloor damage), he would to inform us of the issue and the cost. He would also immediately notify us of these issues to determine how we might prefer to proceed. Also, he wasn?t shy to share some of his thoughts with us on other items that we hadn?t considered (e.g. running speaker wire through the studs since the walls were open). Without a doubt, we would work with Ken again in the future and recommend him for any major (or minor) projects that a homeowner might have. Without him, I fear that we may have just taken a sledgehammer to the house, set up a tent on the property, and called that home
