The UB owner was very responsive and polite. He explained the details of all the fancy terms on the brand pamphlet, like the argon gas, warm edge. He answered my calls quickly. He also explained how they are very much into preserving architectural details of original windows. I like that because a lot of contractors these days just cut off the old trim and cover the area with the lip of the window. It looks hideous and I am glad I didn't get steered to cutting it in my ignorance of home improvement. I also liked that his workers are experienced and work full time, unlike other companies that source out the installers.
The price was a lot more reasonable than companies like Sears and the window company had better reviews than Milgard and andersen so I went with them.
Some not so good things worth noting: As of 10/30/2014, I noticed that my main window is showing some separation between the glass and the trim as well as a bit of condensation between the two glass panes. I haven't contacted UB about it but I plan to.
Another small thing: I recommended them to my mother and all went well except they cracked her living room tile while installing a sliding door. My mom asked if they could fix it, since she had a spare tile. They were nice about responding but they couldn't help her because they don't do that kind of work. So I guess it's OK but every time I visit her it kinda irks me to step on the broken tile.
Rick came out and gave me a demo of the windows they had to offer. I had spoken to several companies and found him to be the most down to earth and sincere. I liked working with a small company that catered to my needs. I wasn't quite ready $$ wise and I explained that to him. No pressure, he said for me to let him know when I was ready. In about 4 weeks I had the money together and called. He sent someone within two days to get the exact measurements and ordered my windows. I was told the delivery would be around 4 weeks but they actually showed up in 2! We made the appointment for install to meet my schedule. Besides replacing many of my single pane windows I also had them remove and close up a single door to the back yard and add a sliding door where a window on that same wall used to be. It is great and really adds light without heat from the sun. The entire crew was great. Friendly, personable and responsive. Every scheduled appointment and delivery was prompt and I have nothing negative to say. For me that's unusual, I'm very picky. When I decide to finish my window replacement it will be Rick I call.
"Yes and the warranty covered the scratched glass and it was replaced by the manufacturer at no charge. You signed the completion certificate stating we did a great job."
It started out good, but when they came into some problem with the patio door, things went downhill. Over the phone Rick said it would take them about 2-3 day to complete the job, and it ended up taking another week (they said they didn't have any gaps in-between jobs). The screen doors on the patio door made a horrible sound when closing. My husband pointed it out to Mark, the main guy (phillipino) in charge of the crew and Mark insisted that it was fine. Also, the kitchen window did not seem to be right, but the crew said it was fine. They ended up ordering a new screen door because it was defective.
According to them everything was complete, except for the big patio door, which they would come back to complete. A while after the crew left, I found my 3 year old with a blade in his hands (which the crew left behind). I was pretty upset about a couple other minor things... then, a few days after, I was in the kitchen feeding my twins with my mom and 3 yerar old and about 3 seconds after sitting down from opening the kitchen window it came down on me. Luckily my blinds helped to break the fall and I was ok, but it was a horrible experience!!! My kids were screaming at the top of their lungs and my mom was in a panic for several days because the window actually hit me on top of my head. I called Rick to explain the situation and although he apologized, they didn't come out right away or even offer to reduce the price of the project. I was really dissapointed.
Did they complete the job? yes
Do I like my windows? yes
"The problem was that you had an illegal room addition and your previous contractor never put a header above the door . You did not want to spend the extra for a new header and you were hoping the new door would support the wall . Jobs need to be installed correctly to code. As far as the window tilting in , you opened it incorrectly. The window slides up and down , you only tilt it it for easy cleaning , not to open it and that is why it fell inwards."
