Initially the experience was great. Jake came out and looked at the project that I wanted to have done. It involved quite a bit of cement work which included a patio, a walkway, some steps, and a mow strip along with adding turf to the backyard. He was enthusiastic and had some great ideas for some future projects which we were talking with him about. He ended up emailing over a quote 2 days later which I thought was timely. I replied back to his email stating that we were still in the process of getting other bids but I would be in touch. Fast forward about a week and a half later we had decided Turf Man would be the one to do the job. I called him and let him know we were ready to proceed. He informed me that they were a little behind because of the rain, understandable since the rain has been a nightmare this year, and he would contact me to schedule a start date. Perfect, sounds good right? Wrong. This is the point where everything went downhill. I never received a phone call from him again. I texted him one time to touch base and he didn’t respond. I emailed him asking about a start date and he did respond to that email mid-April stating it would be about 2-3 weeks. I said ok, I look forward to hearing from you. From that email on it’s been crickets. I’ve emailed him and called and left him a voicemail and he flat out didn’t respond. My main complaint is that if you’re too busy to take on a job then tell me. Don’t blow me off and ignore me. I was planning on spending close to 10k on this project with this company and now I’m back at step 1 with a lot of frustration as well as almost a month and a half of my time wasted. My yard could be done by now if I had gone with another company.

The work is excellent. He is young and energetic. He is so good, I hired him twice. He is currently installing a wall in my side yard.

We are very happy with them. The price was reasonable. They did a really good job, and the new stonework matches the old stonework perfectly.

Background
There was a 25 year old Hackberry tree in my front yard, which was mostly grass with some shrubs. Tree roots had invaded the entire yard and were cracking the driveway and sidewalk. Last October I had the tree removed by Capital Arborists. They also did some stump and root grinding. I hired some laborers to remove the grass, and I hauled it to the dump. By this time I realized I needed more help with roots and soil removal. I hired Obie Maurer (obiestractorwork.com) to scrape the property with his bobcat. He removed eight yards of soil and many more roots.
Review of The Turf Man, Ryan McConnel, owner
Ryan impressed me with his energy and enthusiasm. I liked the fact that he would be on the job, doing the actual work. I checked his references and looked at photos of his work. He seemed like a good choice for the job, so I hired him. He started on Tuesday with a helper, and they completed the irrigation that day. Wed the mow strip was completed by his sub, American River Concrete. Thu they brought in topsoil and bark and planted shrubs and trees. They didn't work on Friday because they service their yard maintenance accounts on that day. Then on Sat they laid the sod. All went well, and I have a great looking front yard landscape now. The work was performed professionally
The only problem was a side yard section where I wanted no grass, just rocks and bark. I suggested rocks, decomposed granite and bark, but the area didn't turn out very well. I take some of the responsibility, but I have to give him a B on quality because I think he should have known it wasn't going to look good, and suggested an alternative. Seemed like they were in a hurry to finish the job.
Overall I am very pleased with the work, and would recommend that you call The Turf Man to get an estimate on any landscaping work you have planned.
