The Sacramento Area Scott's Lawn Service has been providing lawn services at my property for the last couple of years. They service my property every other month (six times a year). During the most recent servicing rotation, I had lawn service in August 2014 and was due for my next lawn service in October 2014.
In September of 2014, "Wayne" called from Scott's Lawn Service, asking me if I would like reseeding done at my property for $82. I agreed to the service, provided that they skip the regular $41.00 service due in October. (In other words, I agreed to receive and pay for the $81 service in lieu of the regular $41 October lawn service, so that I would not wind up with a $123 total lawn service bill for the month of October.) "Wayne" agreed to this concept over the phone.
On October 2, 2014, I received a $41 fertilization bill from Scott's Lawn Service. When I received this bill, I believed that they were splitting the total $82 agreed-to October lawn service into two, separate $41 services.
On October 8, 2014, I received another bill from Scott's Lawn Service; however, this bill was for $82. It appeared that Scott's Lawn Service proceeded with the regular, $41 October lawn service despite my request to refrain from the this service in October. Essentially, they performed a lawn service on my property which I did not approve, and they expected me to pay for this unapproved lawn service.
Since I did not have a written contract with this company (all services agreed to verbally over the phone), I feel like Scott's Lawn Service has taken advantage of me, performing lawn services not approved by me, and essentially "extorting" money from me. I did speak to manager at the Sacramento Area office who stated that they failed to "put a stop" on my account as I had requested several weeks prior to the service. He also stated that "everyone makes mistakes". I do agree that people make mistakes, however, this company?s mistake was now costing me $41.00 which I did not agree to pay. I told him that they were fired.
Anyway, I did pay for both lawn service bills (the approved $82 bill and the unapproved $41 bill) so that this company would not ruin my excellent credit rating by sending an unpaid, unapproved $41 bill to collections.
I am concerned, however, that this Sacramento Area office may use this type of business practice (performing unapproved lawn services) to take money from other innocent, unsuspecting "customers", who are essentially "victims" at that point. I want Angie's List and its members to be aware of this issue. I would recommend that anyone wishing to do business with these people should do so ONLY under a written contract.
"First off this entire issue is over $41.00 Secondly we informed [member name removed] that he could pay for both of these services over the next 2 months so he would feel burdened with the additional $41.00 invoice. He obviously didn't except this offer but takes the time to lodge a complaint on our business practices. We have been in business for over 7 years and actually get very few issues on our service or our billing methods."
