There was a largre amount of dead material in the tree to remove, and power lines to prune around. They were able to complete these tasks in a professional manner. They also shaped the tree for a very attractive appearance. Before their departure, my yard and area were cleaned to my satisfaction.
I now have a lot more light in my back yard and house. My St. Augustine grass is starting to grow again in the dead spots I had. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend A & J Tree Service to anyone and will use them again for a job well done.
After that disappointment I went back to Angie's List to find another tree service company. After a more thorough review of the available companies I found and called A&J Tree Service. This company is owned and operated by a father and son team. The son being a college educated horticulturist. Basically, I called, they responded and I was completely and totally satisfied with every aspect of the job they did for me. The father came out to review what I needed to have done. He looked things over regarding the removal of the large roots growing against the common area fence, determined in about two minutes what he needed to do to remove the fence to get his root/stump cutter machine into place to cut the roots out. No muss no fuss, no hem-hawing around as to why he couldn't do the job, just straight forward experience and common sense on display. Refreshing! So, father, son and two very experienced tree trimmers came out on a Saturday morning, on time and ready to go to work. They removed the fencing necessary to get to the Camphor tree, got their root grinder in place and removed those large and aggressive roots. It took some manual labor as well to get that portion of the job done and father and son handled that themselves while their two workman worked on the tree trimming portion of the job in other parts of our lot. They put the fencing back in place and you would never guess it had been removed. These guys know what they are doing and just get the job done.
The tree trimming portion of the job was performed with skill and artistry. I still haven't figured out how you can be in the middle of a tree and know where to cut limbs to get the shape you are trying to achieve. I guess that is where experience comes into play. To sum it all up, I could not have been more pleased! They were prompt, reasonably priced, experts at what they do, well equipped with modern equipment, and this father and son team are just plain old fashioned genuine good people. And when they left the yard was cleaned up as though they had never been there. Perfect! Bravo!
Now you know what I mean when I say...."I gotta guy (team)" for you. If you need trees trimmed, roots cut out, stumps removed.....call A&J Tree Service! Tell them Rick from North Irvine sent you. I will never call anyone else now that I know who they are and I will be pushing my kids, neighbors and friends to do the same. All the best!
The business owner came to give a quote within a few days of calling. A& J is a father/son business and the father quoted me a price for the full trimming of the oak tree. When I got the estimated TOTAL cost, I then mentioned the Angie's List 5% discount on the total. The father then told me that I should have let him know that I was an Angie's List customer as he would have adjusted the total to account for the 5% difference,...which means that he would have increased the estimate to account for the 5% Angie's List discount. This means that Angie's List customers are NOT MEANT TO GET A DISCOUNT . At this announcement, I wasn't too happy but I was wary of the coming El Nino and of the wind storm that blew through my neighborhood 3 years ago and downed several large oaks. I didn't want a large downed oak on my lawn this year. So, despite the father's reaction to the 5% discount, I went ahead and booked with him.
Father and son arrived at the job right on time at 8:30 as they stated to me. Because of my experience with past tree trimmers, I asked them to shield my plants and pathway lighting fixtures from being damaged from the job. They brought trash cans and plywood boards to shield the fixtures from falling branches and such. I was happy with that. I left them at their job.
When I returned to the property, it was dark and the guys have left. However, in their rush to get leave the job done before it got dark at 4:30 pm (winter), they left behind lots and lots of small cut branches on my lawn and on the neighbor's lawn. You could tell that they were in a rush to get home once darkness fell.
The next morning I found the following:
1. Damaged plants ( I lovingly planted these last year)
2. Damaged / Broken solar lights
3. Broken Promises to cut /trim a small tree at the root.-- they only trim the branches
4. My lawn and neighbor's lawn still pockmarked with branches after the job was complete. I had to spend an hour to clean up tree debris on my front yard.
5. Large overhanging branch that reached into the neighbor's lot --- though, they promised to cut it, it that was not cut.
After I complained and paid the full bill the next day, they returned to do more clean -up , but did a spotty job of completing the job and fulfilling their original promises.
All in all, I found they did not live up to their promises, left my property with too much tree debris, many of my plants were damaged, and they did not have a professional attitude toward the Angie's List discount.
Next time I trim my oak tree I would go with a different tree service. At best, these guys are satisfactory.
The tree looks beautiful and the cleanup after the job was exceptional. These guys know what they are doing. No surprises - just great work. I will definitely use in the future when needed.
I will attach photos of the tree before and after so you can see the job for yourself if I can figure out how to do it.
These folks were very friendly and responsive right from the beginning. I talked to Roland on the phone and agreed upon a date for an estimate. Armando, Roland's father, came out to give the estimate. This is a father & son run company. We agreed upon a price and they were able to come out the following week to do the work. Before leaving Armando let me copy the certificate of insurance for the company. He explained that his crew was insured as was our property in the event of any damage.
They arrived on time with the crew as well as a chipper to grind up all the branches that were cut. One tree cutter did all the thinning so all the trees are now very uniform. Other guys helped trim a few of the lower branches from the ground and hauled everything out to the chipper. They finished the job in one day which is remarkable as the trees were very tall. Either Armando or Roland, and sometimes both, were here all day to supervise the work.
Cleanup was very good. The pine trees in the backyard are on a hill, but hill was pretty clean when they finished. A few branches fell into the neighbor's yard and they were sure to clean them up, too. Everything was very neat when the job was completed.
We are very happy with the work as the trees look beautiful and are now letting more sun through. Also, they are no longer top heavy from new growth so less likely to be a problem in any strong winds.
I would highly recommend A&J Tree Service.
