Matt performed the furnace inspection and cleaning/maintenance. He educated me on some of my furnace functions as well as informing me that my old thermostat was so to be shot/dead as battery acid had leaked into the system. He advised to get a new thermostat. Overall, he performed a thorough inspection and I was satisfied.
To update further, I purchased a new wall thermostat and installed it myself. Followed the directions and called the thermostat's manufacturer for assist. It is just too coincidental that now my furnace will not operate, nor do the electrical wires that even operate my furnace/AC even register that they have energy per the voltmeter I used to test it. I have left a message for Flanders and I expect/hope that they will come back to follow up.
11/15/15 The technician Matt from Flander's did come back out to look the furnace. Prior to his return appt., I was able to get my furnace operating. When Matt came, I informed him of this and he just wanted to make sure that things were operating normally. Came in, verified things, and left. After he left, the furnace didn't come on b/c my house was already at my set temp.
This brings me to the next AM when my furnace was to come on based on the program/schedule I had set. It did, but it was not blowing heat. So, I again had to call Flander's back out. Matt eventually came back on a Thurs., inspected, and informed me that a relay had failed and that he would have to order the part. The part was never taken out to get the part numbers, maker of the part, etc. The next day I got a call from the office mgr Marge that the part can't be located. I s/w the owner Bret and he stated he would come by. He came out, looked at the furnace, and stated the furnace manufacturer doesn't make the part and that an aftermarket part may not fit. He said that even if he had the part, he would not want to work on it b/c of its age and the risks/liability. He informed me that b/c of its age, I should consider a new one. He denied that he was trying to sell me a furnace when I called him out on this.
Fast forward one week. My wife and kids all had to deal with a cold house and less than comfortable conditions. I go to the furnace myself and investigate. I ensure all electrical is dead/off to the furnace, remove the wires from the part, and remove the part/relay. After work, I swing by a recommended appliance parts store (Appliance Parts Distributors in Dublin, CA), but they don't have the part. They did help me to identify the part number and manufacturer, and showed me that it was available from online sites. Thumbs up to them for helping me locate the part. I went home and ordered it. It came two days later, I followed the picture I took of the old relay to wire it, turned on the power, and have been getting heat ever since.
I called Bret to find out why they wouldn't take out the old relay, note the part number/maker, or just take the part with them to find it, and he stated they only deal with the furnace manufacturer to get parts. I stated that the relay was an aftermarket part and was able to be found accordingly. He said that they are not going to search the internet to find the part.
Whatever the case, I can't say that I trust Flanders/Bret. Even if he said otherwise, perhaps it is easier to recommend replacing an old furnace vs. locating a part. But, that's what the internet is for. I give a thumbs up to the tech Matt for troubleshooting the bad part though. Matt was always professional and informative in the times he came over to inspect the furnace.
